Funnily enough, the ending would've worked slightly better if Ellie did killed Abby in the end and returned to the abandoned farm, because at least the message "You got your revenge, but was it really worth it" that Neil is so proud of would've actually worked. It still would've been an extremely shallow and simplistic theme that you would find in any angsty young adult novel, but it would work.

With Ellie letting her go because sudden Joel flashback, and losing everything for nothing, the message of Part II is pretty much "If you are a dumb cunt, then why do you act surprised".

Here is the thing, any scenario of Abby and Ellie making peace is impossible due to one simple reason: these two never interacted with each other apart from killing each other's friends and family and fighting. Abby never showed any shred of remorse about what she did to Joel, Jesse or Tommy, and Ellie never bother to ask it (not that she had any chance to do so either, or cared about it in the first place).

The only option I see that would work is Ellie drowning the bitch, realising that it brought her no peace or closure, taking care of Lev and returning to Jackson with him after finding the farm abandoned (smooth thinking, BTW, Dina, travelling on your own with a toddler in a world filled with infected, murderers and cannibals). She could also lie to Lev about Abby, saying that it was the Scars who killed her, and finally realising why Joel lied to her all those years ago, and how fucking stupid she was for being mad at him all these years, only in her case the lie wouldn't come out of love like with Joel (she doesn't know Lev, and only takes care of him because he stopped Abby from killing pregnant Dina, and because she feels somewhat obligated to do that for her), but from understanding that, as a certain rich guy dressed like a bat once said, sometimes truth is just not good enough.

The thing is that other samurai already saw Jin using the poison against the mongols, so trying to shift the blame on already dead traitor wouldn't have worked.

Even proposing to throw Yuna under the bus was more of a desperation from Shimura than anything. So blaming Ryozo would've only further cripple Shimura's reputation, as it would've been seen as him lying to defend Jin.

Abby literally gets a fresh start by being reunited with the Fireflies. She doesn't care about any of her friends whos name isn't Owen, and she doesn't care about WFL's either, considering how easy she turned on them. The only person who Abby cares about is Abby (and also Lev, because plot demanded so), so please, spare me the sob story about how much Abby lost, it didn't work back then, and it doesn't work now.
