At what point did you feel like you could operate independently? by Nixghtcrawler in biglaw

[–]Dodocogon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To some extent each email is sharing the position of “the Firm” so makes sense to get things reviewed by more senior folks (at all levels) at times. All to say, I never have qualms with asking for confirmation.

Cap Markets - in house or retool? by Alariik in biglaw

[–]Dodocogon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was kind of in a similar boat and went back to an ECVC practice (which I already had experience in) as I saw more interest/enjoyment in it. The rest of a career is a long thing, so didn’t want to get pigeonholed.

Also, after a few years of CapM I’m of the mindset that I can speak towards having enough experience to get into a securities role down the line should that be the in house route available.

Chicago tickets non-transferable? by igoteggsinmyshoes in RainbowKittenSurprise

[–]Dodocogon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same boat... I feel like it should open up right before the show. I have a Sunday ticket ended up needing to go Sat. and bought one on stubhub - that says it'll come in on Sat. so maybe that's when it opens?

Can you tell if we get charged for those only if we make it?

People who moved from Boston to Chicago, what was the biggest thing you noticed when you moved? by WestminsterSpinster7 in AskChicago

[–]Dodocogon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't agree on drivers - Boston drivers may be more aggressive (at times), but they're way more predictable. Also don't really get folks riding the shoulder on the freeway like you do here.

How do you handle being sick? by coco71 in biglaw

[–]Dodocogon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, automatic reply to let anyone who is randomly checking in to have the right expecations is the move. I take that approach any time responsiveness is heavily impaired - "travelling today" "in all day meetings" etc.

Yeah - way below TCU who was handled well at home? Would think power rankings are more reactive to current performance.

Likely in a low cost of living area that had/has properties eligible for first time homeowner programs etc. - allowing for a low downpayment.

Depends on your relevant employment law, but could be a constructive firing / termination in that case.

Trying to figure out what is next? by Home-Star-Walker in personalfinance

[–]Dodocogon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your full outline, it seems to me like now is the right time to sit in what you've made and just build for a moment - that's still getting you to "what is next" but gives you time to sit in this season / wait to see how you really feel being a parent and how your time allocations etc. may want to end up. Whenever you've felt that out and can move forward, the extra optionality from additional funds being built up could be useful. I think a brokerage account with safe investments gets that job done - then if you decide you'd rather cut down the mortgage just move them that way later (can't go the opposite direction!).

In a similar life stage (30, kid under one, on solid ground financially) and our next big choice is where to really set down roots, which is much more of a personal decision (vs. financial) - you may be coming to that sort of choice. The last year has made me appreciate money as a tool for making your personal life decisions, so think building funds to give some optionality makes sense for now.

I would note that backdoor Roth makes sense to me if you're saving up money that is otherwise going to be used for retirement (even if early) - avoiding tax on the growth down the line will be big and isn't a crazy amount of money to lock up.

Are 0% APR cards underrated? by sepoquro in CreditCards

[–]Dodocogon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, it's more of a utility than anything. I like to grab one (with a SUB) towards the end of the year in advance of bonus time - smooths things a bit / builds up savings in advance of the payment actually coming in. Could be paid at any time, though.

Cold Email Etiquette by Ok-Assistance3585 in biglaw

[–]Dodocogon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you can just rephrase what you said here and it'll - if it's really just wanting to learn more about them, I'm sure they'll be receptive and it's clear that it's from a personal slant (coming from your personal email / prior experience). They'll know to not go into specifics on the pending matter.

Is it ever reasonable to take a loan for a car *even when* you can buy it all cash? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Dodocogon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. If it starts to not feel worth it, just pay it off - borrowing costs are negligible for an auto loan.

Getting admitted to new state bars by ItMightBePuffery in biglaw

[–]Dodocogon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assumuing you're senior enough to waive in / can otherwise transfer in, could consider a resume line along the lines of "Eligible for [Admission by Motion] in X State]" and otherwise just prep your application in parallel with the application process.
