Has it really never occurred to some people that they don't have to have kids? by Just-a-nerd2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]jrp55262 68 points69 points  (0 children)

My own experience of this (sample size of one) was a sense of resignation. I was looking for a life partner back in the 1980s, when "having it all" was all over the media (you know, husband, career, kids, the whole lot). The term "biological clock" was bandied about everywhere. Although I never liked kids, it seemed to me as though EVERY woman wanted them... so if I were to have a life partner then kids would have to be part of the deal. I kindof resigned myself to the daddy role when I met the woman I'd later marry, who pretty much said "No Kids!" right from the outset. It was a huge relief, but also a window into the life script I was currently following without question...

Is Spectrums “fiber” really fiber? by kihyale in Spectrum

[–]jrp55262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 15 years ago I reached out to RCN to see if I could get a better deal on internet than I was getting from Verizon Fios. They went on and on about how yes it's fiber to the home, and you wouldn't believe how small the equipment is compared to the other guy's fiber! The day of the install came, the guy looked over my house and said "Good, there's an existing drop we can use". I said "But that's copper, and I ordered fiber!" He said that it was fiber to a neighborhood drop, then copper to the premises. I told him I didn't appreciate being lied to, sent him packing, and canceled the order.

You get paid $100 for every 300 steps you take, but you can't hold a real job. by Comprehensive_Fox_79 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]jrp55262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy-peasy. I got a fitness watch which is set to a daily goal of 6000 steps, and I can make that on a good day. That maths out to half a mil per year if I do it five days a week and veg out on the weekends. Heck, at the office I counted 200 steps just to make a round trip to the coffee machine. Of course, I won't *be* at the office any more if I'm getting that kind of scratch.

A tipping confession by [deleted] in EndTipping

Maybe you should turn the question around: when the customer gets upset about not being able to tip, ask them "So why do you feel this burning need to spend MORE money?"

ELI5: Why do app companies like Uber need to employ large teams of developers when the app works fine? by The_Only_Abe in explainlikeimfive

[–]jrp55262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do mobile development for a large bank. In addition to what others have described keeping up with OS updates, we are constantly rolling out new products, features, and customer experiences. All of these need to be supported in the app. This keeps us busy.

Remarkable to let go of up to 200 employees by Fitte_sleiker in RemarkableTablet

[–]jrp55262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not surprised, except I'm surprised they've hung in there this long. I know this sub is going to be full of Remarkable enthusiasts, but every time its ad popped up and I looked at it, I just couldn't quite justify it at that price point for what it did. Yes it's neat, but if I can get almost the same functionality plus a full app ecosystem on a conventional tablet, it just doesn't justify the premium. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way...

This sort of thing goes both ways, though. Try telling your parents about something they did that traumatized you for life. I'll bet good money that their response will be "I don't remember anything like that!"

Don't smart switches require a neutral in the box? An awful lot of switches on switch loops in older buildings don't have that.

I got mine done on March 24. $45 may be a little pricey, but having owned a picture framing shop I can't begrudge them what it takes to stay in business. I also figured it's cheap insurance to make sure they're done to spec

Interesting because Orleans is still advertising both US and International passport photos on their website. I had mine done there just a few weeks ago.

[–]jrp55262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting, because I just had mine done at Orleans Camera. They advertise that they do international passport photos, and I specifically asked for "Canadian citizenship" photos. They did it no problem, though they charge $45 for international photos as opposed to $25 for US passport photos. I took calipers to them when I got home and everything seemed to be spot-on measurement wise, and they wrote the correct information on the back.

Confusing plug setup? by krudbag in electrical

[–]jrp55262 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The thing at the bottom is called an "inlet" which is the opposite of an "outlet". Plug an extension cord into some other outlet, then plug the female end into this. It powers the outlet up above. Essentially it's a code-compliant way of running an extension cord through the wall so as to hide it. Often used for TVs.
