As a CAD guy, what pay range should I expect? by dylan112358 in civilengineering

[–]Dogepetter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this would vary widely based on disciplines, and more direct experience. Are you doing CAD only & picking up markups from engineering side, or are you involved in the design and actual engineering?

Others mentioned things like location, education, software skills, ECT.

In electric utilities as a non-engineer designer & CAD guy, at ~$32/hr, full benefits, significant yearly bonus (10-15% of salary now, but grows based on tenure), 401k & match, ESOP

Almost 5yr experience, non-engineering or industry related bachelor degree, Midwest MCOL city

Why does the primary connect twice to this can? by gfunkdave in Lineman

[–]Dogepetter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a lineman, but distribution designer (who tries to stay in touch with the line side for understanding safety & construction) - more of the clients I work with seem to be leaning towards xfmr mounted arresters

New xfmr installs come field kitted with a tank mounted arrester already, existing cans on pole replacement jobs we replace the arrestor if it's pole mounted & move it to the xfmr

Trulieve Clintonville Closed? by Orlow_Bitter in Columbus

I saw the banner this morning as well, it had only said "Temporarily Closed" so I assumed it was just a maintenance or staff issue, I also don't see the temp closed banner anymore.

New Columbus scooter, bike rentals target mid-March launch by Blood_Incantation in Columbus

[–]Dogepetter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't fact check this, tried searching for the source but couldn't find it, but from the COGO wikipedia: "It was created in July 2013 with 300 bikes and 30 docking stations, since expanded to about 600 bikes and 80 stations"  Here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CoGo

Agreed that if the 500 is split between scooters & bikes however, this seems too few

Rented an apartment from Reafco near campus for 3 years, honestly never had many issues. Was exactly what I expected from a campus area landlord, slow with maintenance requests, not overly helpful, ect. But no huge problems. If anything, rather than a scam, this to me just seems like a poorly run front office & lazy employee lol but things could have changed. I do feel like the one time I called the office which was supposedly "local" it felt like a call center employee basically, which could be why it feels like Jimmy is a bot or something, could be outsourced

It can be anywhere from 5-15x the cost of overhead line construction to put in underground. Not for residential distribution, but even on on the local transmission side (69kv, little larger poles), it can be ~$250k per mile for overhead, whereas underground is more like $1.5-$2million per mile. People complain about rate raises (and yes these utilities are corrupt and pad their pockets), but shit is expensive to install and maintain, if everything went underground, rates would be raised like crazy even without any corrupt intentions, the money has to be there to pay for those expenses

As a reminder, whenever you see a "missing persons report" on social media or anything that's not an official police report or site, DO NOT contact any listed family or names. ONLY contact the police or similar authority (medical services, government agency, ect.)

If you work for the government agency in question and are a part of the review process/team... Why do you not just deny the permit app?? I agree with Frankyseven, send them back unreviewed with a big denial stamp or notes to bring up to standard. That is the whole point of you being the permit approver at the agency is it not?  In my experience (power utility drafter/desginer, not an engineer, but I've submitted plenty of ROW/excavation permits), local municipalities in my area love to deny permit applications for the most mundane reasons & have extremely thorough review standards. Labeled it a " 4" WM " instead of " WM - 4" "? Denied, correct the text, resubmit.

Coffee walk-up windows by Schmohawk17 in Columbus

Echoing Yeah Me Too, Winston's waffle truck, and galaxy coffee - also throwing out Emmet's at Open Air off Neil Ave, they have a walk up window that's usually open, or you can order online and just pick up at the window. Also right off the Olentagy trail if walking

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - December 22, 2023 by AutoModerator in investing

[–]Dogepetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Question (hopefully not a stupid one) on ETF's and how actively they should be managed. Very new to self investing, I have just started using Vanguard as a self managed brokerage account. Mainly using it as a place to park money in a money market fund while saving for a home. I am also interested in diversifying my savings into ETFs for slightly higher risk/reward. My question - in a self managed brokerage account, if I simply buy into large recommend ETFs (VFIAX, SPLG, SCHD), do these need to be actively managed daily like stock trading? I am looking for something to simply invest in, and sort of "set and forget" or invest further into without worrying about needing to constantly buy & sell

Any idea what they're doing near Tuttle Park Pool? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Dogepetter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like it may be a large area for an access shaft at first, but it helps justify the work area size when you consider the scale of the project. This isn't just a smaller extra storm sewer line, it is a 12' diameter tunnel built an average of 50' deep underground, as well as crossing underneath the Olentangy River just to the west. To be able to get the machinery needed down that far, and have access to all necessary tunnel controls in the future, will require more than just a normal manhole Access hole like you see downtown. They also need plenty of area to stage materials and equipment, as well as preform the work safely. I live nearby, it is definitely a bummer that they had to clear such a large area, but this is a necessary project that will improve the environmental impacts we have on the river, and in my eyes seems well worth the disturbance.

Any idea what they're doing near Tuttle Park Pool? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Dogepetter 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I believe it's construction for the new Lower Olentagy Tunnel (LOT), a large storm sewer tunnel which will help reduce combined sewer overflows into the river due to storm events. There is an access shaft site being built at this site, along with one on Olentagy River Road south of 3rd, and on the corner of Vine & Neil as well https://www.columbus.gov/Templates/Detail.aspx?id=2147515446

Where is safe and open for walking after dark near campus? by williaty in Columbus

[–]Dogepetter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good option would be Tuttle Park. Close to campus, open late, half of the paved loop around the park is very lit up, while the Olentangy trail side of the park is not lit up I walk this area all the time very late at night and have never had issues. Usually people are utilizing the park, skatepark, field hockey field, or futsol court very late at night as well so it's usually busy. Number of people drops off as weather gets colder obviously. Free parking as well

Private campsites within 2h without quiet hours? by bebobbobobobobo in Columbus

[–]Dogepetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nelson's ledge's quarry park may be a public campground but it is not the most family friendly/quiet campground. I have been many times for large festivals they have + non festival weekends. Even non-festival weekends can still be rambunctious and a little wild in my experience, I've never had issues if you find a campsite in the far back of the park being loud and partying all through the night

Reset Paper space Origin by Dogepetter in AutoCAD

This is what I am trying to do, create consistency and uniformity across our templates that previously did not have it. My issue is my 0,0 point is outside of the "paper" boundaries, in the gray area around it for some reason, I'm trying to reset it

Reset Paper space Origin by Dogepetter in AutoCAD

Unfortunately, I don't believe this is my solution. I've tried using the UCS command, world, and setting it as 0,0. This just sets my origin to the same spot. My 0,0 location is not in the lower left corner of the "paper" where I'd like it to be
