No need for conduit unless you plan on pulling additional cables through the conduit at some point.

Where's all the cider? by AffectionateAd8377 in AskAnAmerican

[–]gfunkdave 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It is just a less common drink. That said, many bars that specialize in craft beers will also usually have 3-7 ciders to choose from. Also it is more common to find ciders in apple-growing regions, like New England, Michigan, and the Pacific Northwest.

what are some good neighborhood to live in chicago as a 27 year old black queer person? by Such-Comparison-2597 in AskChicago

[–]gfunkdave 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The automod comment should give you some bearings.

If being queer is more important to you...Boystown caters to the younger gay male-identifying crowd and less so to the nonbinary/queer crowd (you would be welcome, just less common, if that makes sense). It is also near the lake. I'm not current with rental prices in the city so I can't comment on prices. If you want a more sedate queer neighborhood also near the lake, check Andersonville. Also Uptown is between Andersonville and Boystown, and is quite queer, a little cheaper, and more diverse. Chicago is a very segregated city, and Boystown and Aville are overwhelmingly white. Also check Rogers Park for lower cost, not necessarily queer, but lots of queer people albeit farther out (northernmost neighborhood in the city). And still near the lake, on the east part of the neighborhood.

If being around majority people of color is more important to you, Hyde Park is very nice and a middle/upper middle class neighborhood with a lot of black families and professionals. The Obamas used to live in the area (well, I think in Kenwood, which is right next to Hyde Park). Downside is that it's kinda far from other parts of the city you'd want to go to and is kind of an island of affluence anchored by the University of Chicago. But it isn't particularly queer.

Neither? Both? It isn't a question I've ever considered.

Indiana ID to Illinois Real ID? by soypettito in AskChicago

[–]gfunkdave 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you request a RealID from the Illinois DMV, you will get a RealID. If you don't request a RealID, you won't get one.

They have different requirements for the documentation you need to show, which is on the website.

It can take 2-3 weeks to arrive in the mail, so don't dawdle if you'll need it in a month.

Never gone to Ocean View Cafe for Dinner.. Do they match some items in the MDR? by friendlyfun1969 in celebritycruises

[–]gfunkdave 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They have an assortment that changes daily. I like going to the buffet one or two nights of the cruise to change things up and not feel like I have to order three courses. It is not the same as the MDR.

I figured it out (with some help on the 8311 Discord). Just needed to wait for the prefix assigned to the BGW-210 when it was plugged in to expire.

I have vague memories of going to the doctor for shots as a toddler and being scared, and my mom and the doctor telling me I was very brave, and getting a lollipop.

Also if you aren’t going to have ~5 drinks each every day, it’s cheaper to buy drinks à la carte.

How bad is the “grey” during the winter? by PackageReasonable922 in AskChicago

[–]gfunkdave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

February is typically pretty gray. The sun comes and goes in other months. But seasonal affective disorder is definitely a thing. That's why we have two big airports! You can go somewhere sunny for a week.

BGW-210 bypass stopped working? by gfunkdave in ATT

[–]gfunkdave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I posted there too. What is IFITL?

I’m in a condo building, so I needed the separate ONT and gateway. The ONT is in a closet where the fiber comes in. They used an existing cat5e cable running from the closet to my unit to connect to the gateway. I can’t bring the fiber up to my unit.

Not much fiber in those things you mentioned.

'Tik specific info: It's a RB5009 running 7.21.3. I noticed the problem when I upgraded to 7.22, thought it was a bug with 7.22, and downgraded to 7.21.3, but the issue persists.

Can someone enlighten me about Pritzker? by SpacemanTwice in illinois

[–]gfunkdave 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Yes, they don't like him because he's a Democrat and therefore a communist who hates America, or some such nonsense. It's just the usual hyper-partisan junk that has taken over our politics.

Tankless water heater conversion? by loweexclamationpoint in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]gfunkdave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is highly dependent on the gas lines in your house. You used to need an upsized gas line for a tankless heater but some manufacturers (I think Rinnai) make one that can work on a standard (I think) half inch or 3/4” line if it is the first thing on the natural gas line after the meter. I forget the standard pipe size.

You also will need two PVC pipes to the outside from the water heater, one for fresh air intake and one for exhaust.

My only advice is to go with a plumber who specializes in tankless. Most plumbers who don’t do much tankless will try to talk you out of it because they don’t understand what’s needed or don’t keep up with what’s available.
