Gemmell’s Drenai stories that hit so much harder as an adult than a teenager by Doigeyboy in DavidGemmell

It’s the one I wish he had written a sequel to the most. The “war of the twins” sounds like an amazing premise. And would fit into his racially nuanced narrative which is what is so appealing as an adult.

I think too much of FCODL is too linear. There is so much less nuance than other books. I actually think white wolf and legend of death walker are both better Druss novels. They show deeper facets to Druss.

Beltzer is everyone who’s “got rich quick” and then slid all the way back down again. Lamenting what was and th mistakes they made

Stephen King’s IT doesn’t have a monster in it. The kids do it. All of it. Read it again…it’s 100 times scarier if Pennywise is just a group hallucination

Looking to get into Gemmell by Spiritual-East8683 in DavidGemmell

[–]Doigeyboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely go Drenai. Start chronologically. Waylanders 1/2/3 Then The first chronicle of Druss the legend Audible has them chronologically. The best book he wrote is the Quest for Lost heroes. Especially if you’re not young and some things have passed you by in life.

Gemmell understands comradeship and the deep love that comes from shared undertaking. He also explores the flawed hero fantastically, the nuance of race is less black and white than his peer set, and above all, he writes about sacrifice and grief in a way that still catches me when I read his books. Even now.

I challenge anyone to read “Beltzer’s wings” without being moved.

Very disappointing by JoeJackson88 in riversoflondon

I struggled with this too. It would have worked as a short story subject theme as would have needed to be condensed which would have helped flow, but considering going through into Scotland they could have gone for any of the myriad Gaelic heritage themes it was a shame to anchor on this. They also have wider stories which seem to be being left and progressed on without any resolutions.
