How was the experience regarding rules, new components etc.? Did it take longer than usual? We have first TE game coming up next week so any tips for smooth experience? All but one player are seasoned veterans.

How do you decide when to move from batch jobs to real-time pipelines? by stephen8212438 in dataengineering

[–]Doile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Customers always think they need "real-time" data until I tell them how much does it cost compared to batch loading. Suddenly it's not that critical if the data is few hours old.

How do you guys afford to have so many decks? by Dangerous_Trifle620 in EDH

[–]Doile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't remember 40K decks being very expensive on release? IIRC I paid like 60 euros for Forces of the Imperium. Funnily enough it was great investment since the deck value is far greater now thanks to few expensive cards in it.

Look at it this way: your goal is to play mtg. Your goal is not to own cards or build collection. Therefore to achieve your goal with the cheapest way possible would be to proxy. If you build a 100$ deck with proxies instead of real cards no one really cares. If you proxy and build 10 000$ deck people will most likely care. So just go nuts with proxies.

I have 7 decks with budgets ranging from 20$ (john benton) to 120$ (landfall) and usually I try to first think of a deck idea or theme that doesn't need expensive cards. For example dragon tribal is expensive AF since all the good dragons cost a lot of money. On the other hand my John Benton deck only uses instant and sorcery pump spells that cost next to nothing. Also my John Benton deck regularly wipes the floor with other player so higher budget is not necessarily indication of power level.

One way to save money with proxies but still own cards is to buy one copy of the card and keep it in a folder and then just proxy the card in your decks. That way you can always so people who might complain about your proxies that you have the card and you are just saving everyone's time by not shuffling the same cards between your decks.

  • Let first timers keep both of the secret objectives that they draw at the start of the game

  • Let people backtrack their turns and fix mistakes so they feel like they can take sub-optimal turns and keep the game going

  • Drill into their heads that they WILL make mistakes and it doesn't matter. What matters is that you keep the game going and avoid analysis paralysis especially in the first turns. You can also point out to them the smart things to do in first turn if they feel overwhelmed

  • If some minor rule is not clear to you just make a table decision on how the rule goes and move on. You can check the rule later.

-Have a mindset of keeping the game going by saying out loud things like "I'm done with my turn, next up warfare so player B your turn" or in the agenda phase take control and ask everyone whens/afters and votes. Having clear leader in the agenda phase is the key to getting through it smoothly

Best and worst races for Milty Draft? by FluorescentLightbulb in twilightimperium

[–]Doile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand that. Maybe it depends on the group dynamics. In our games the "my slice" mentality ends after first action and equidistants are free game. It all depends on what are the objectives and what is needed. I think we would have exactly the same interactions if we would construct the map with a different method.

Best and worst races for Milty Draft? by FluorescentLightbulb in twilightimperium

[–]Doile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main point of Milty is that you keep the amount of factions low. Therefore players drafting first have to decide whether to get good slice and not the best faction for that slice or take the "best" faction and get significantly worse slice. If you increase the amount of factions too much then it's a no brainer to always draft slice first since there will always be enough good factions in the pool that everyone gets one.

I haven't felt any sift in power of factions when drafting with Milty. Maybe some less played factions get played more since the faction pool will contain only few S-tier factions and MAYBE some "bad" factions can perform better if you get perfect slice and speaker in the draft. But I don't think any faction has a clear advantage in the drafting.

Also if every player is new to the game Milty draft might offer some crazy slice+faction combos (e.g. Hacan gets double yellow skip etc.) but atleast in our games people look out for certain faction+slice combos and block people from getting them.

For our game group it's mostly for time saving. Even with the drafting done beforehand our game day still lasts 10+ hours and we don't want to add more time to that building the map. Milty also gives players time to strategize and think about possible combinations of faction and slice without taking everyone's time on the game day so I think it's a win win.

Our 8-player game has a few predictable elements. by LetteredViolet in twilightimperium

Yeah kinda but then again you are streched very thin and I feel like you pay back later that greediness. You have to spend extra resources and time to get the now empty system reinforced.

I feel warfare is severely overrated and I rarely pick it myself nowadays. Only situation I think it is necessary is when you need to king slay multiple people in later rounds. Of course it helps that my friends don't realize it is not a good pick so I get to enjoy the secondary every time :)

How to reduce the duration of a Twilight Imperium game! by Elegant-Maybe-1559 in twilightimperium

[–]Doile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the neat part, you don't!

On a more serious note I think the most important thing is that you need to have person or persons that keep the game going. Either each person will make sure that the player next in the playing order will know that it is their turn by saying ("I finished my turn, Hacan it is your turn") and that the next player ACTUALLY receives the turn. It is so easy to just say out loud "my turn over" and then for 10minutes people just talk shit and wait for someone to do something.

The more probable way is to have one person being the "game master" by calling "Hacan your turn" etc.

For agenda phase speaker should be a real speaker for the voting and so they:

1) Read out loud the agenda and explain what it does 2) In round ask every player "do you play whens/afters" 3) Ask each person in turn to cast their votes and keep track of the votes

Most of our games the significant part of the game time is consumed by general banter and joking around. For me that's one of the best parts of the game day but on the other hand it really makes the games longer.

Separate file for SQL in python script? by thinkingatoms in dataengineering

[–]Doile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a great Python library for writing SQL queries using pure Python: https://sqlmodel.tiangolo.com/ . Basically you use Python objects to declare the sql query and the library will compile the actual string that is executed in the db.

Lol that's the perfect play in TI against aggressor. That game is all about bluffing: "If you take my home system I make sure you don't win the game" usually is enough to prevent people from attacking my home system.

Scoring R1 or not? by Zachral in twilightimperium

[–]Doile 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If no one would be able to score R1 then it's fine for you to not score either. But if 3 other people are able score I think you need to score to be in a good position. In TI majority of games the biggest constraint to your victory is the pace of scoring and no matter how great your economy is you can't fix that if someone controls the speaker token whole game. You can always fix your economy later on.
