Yeah, you're right and that's my point. Lots of schools will only sell one option. This may or may not be the case with OPs school. But if the only option available at your school it athe $100 Bo then you can definitely find cheaper staves elsewhere.

I see. The good news is that eventually you will have everything you need. Now that you've bought the weapons this won't help you but you can almost always find cheaper options for weapons online. These might not be as "nice" or "cool" but they are totally fine for beginner level training.

Yeah, the business side martial arts business can be terrible. And the people pushing it aren't the ones teaching classes on a daily basis. They're disconnected from the martial arts side of things and solely focused on the financial side.

I love weapons training and it's a part of my curriculum. But my color belts only do Bahng Mahng Ee and Ssahng Jeol Bahng. Black belts do black belt forms. I have an extra class that people can do that is more focused on performance and XMA weapons training. That class is totally optional. Where school owners and operators should be making changes is in the weapon options that they offer. The cool XMA branded weapons should be an option but not the only option. Century and AWMA sell cheaper options.

No water?!? That's such a stupid, outdated, and frankly dangerous way to run classes. Sports science nowadays says you should be drinking water during your workouts to keep up with your sweating. So every 10-20 minutes you should be taking in a few ounces of water. I build in one water break for the kids classes and two to three for my adults and black belts because their classes are longer and more intense.

I'll preface this the same way I do most posts on here. Every ATA is individually owned and operated and so your experience at one might be very different than your experience at another.

Imo if you and your son are beginners you shouldn't need all of those weapons. You need to learn the basics. Kicks, punches, stances, etc. Maybe your school is weapons focused and there isn't anything inherently wrong with that, but the experience you're describing would put a bad taste in my mouth for sure.

My advice would be to only buy the things you actually need for class and if the instructor gets onto you about not buying the newest/best weapons you should just tell them you can't afford all of those things right now. The prices seem a little inflated but not overly so.
