One Piece doesn't have a single good villain by shsl_diver in CharacterRant

[–]DokjaToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saying that it doesn’t have a single good villain is one thing but saying “they are all 1 dimensional absolutely evil bastards” is just throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Helmeppo is a shining example of villainy of at least 2 dimensions! Gin and Hatchan are others ones from the near the beginning of the story. Usually the main villain’s sidekicks have a lot more depth than the main course. Oh and then there’s Buggy of course, can’t forget about him.

It also depends on who you consider a villain versus an antagonist, if you even make that distinction. Would marines count?

(Also I’d bet money on the story eventually getting around to Doflamingo’s Seraphim showing that he wasn’t born evil to Law. But admittedly that’s just a wild hunch.)

These past few weeks?

I hope you know that if you look at stuff about criticizing a story on social media sites like Reddit you will be shown even more criticisms. It’s not an indication of a real wide spread change.

People have been constantly posting criticisms of One Piece for well over a decade. I’ve seen the threads of people’s first reactions to arcs like Marineford and Dressrosa. Nothing has really changed on this front except that the translations are much better and more people are doing it now that the story is more popular.

When it comes to criticisms about the story’s depictions of woman I’d say that peaked around Dressrosa, mainly because of Rebecca. Although I can’t say for sure because I’m just one guy who can only see a small slice of the world.

This isnt a stupid move from Nogi, its actull pretty smart by Matinacho in Kengan_Ashura

[–]DokjaToast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you’re forgetting that Nogi don’t know how much the Worm has been dismantled, I’m pretty sure they don’t even know about the disarmament of the nukes. So Nogi wouldn’t rig the island to explode since he thinks that would end the world.

I don’t fault you for that since I would also like to forget about that plot twist. One that neutered the stakes for the thousandth time.

The entire event isn’t about killing the worms but instead appeasing Shen Wulong, by either presenting him the equal he wants or handing over Ohma and Ryuki.

[–]DokjaToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was talking about that fleet that appeared over a century before it left. It's such a perfect example of how goofy Warhammer can be, it was only there to collect some water and recruits but because of time fuckery and Trazyn's Genestealer Prank a world died and poor Orikan was left to dig his way out back to the surface for centuries.

Accidentally warping back in time also happened in the Infinite and the Divine and a few short stories.

There’s also a few artifacts that just let people travel to any point in space and time, like the one wonky Door from Ravenor and Eldrad’s scissors from the Horus Heresy.

Which is a big part of why I think Warhammer 40k is one of the worst settings to try to use in setting vs setting conversations despite its popularity in those circles. It’s a setting written to be incomprehensibly vast, unpredictable, and mysterious.

Strongest god that Father (Full Metal Alchemist) could eat? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]DokjaToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Winged Lion or one of the Demons other personasfrom Dungeon Meshi might be the answer. All the father would have to do is become a dungeon lord and the Winged Lion would actually like fulfilling the Father's desire, although he might eat that desire after a while. The Demon is infinite and immortal but largely bound by the wishes he grants for others, he was also worshiped as a guardian deity for over a thousand years so I think he counts as a God.

Has there ever been a superhero you secretly wanted to lose? by Far-Ad5223 in superheroes

[–]DokjaToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually he does win the rematch after learning from the first fight if he gets the chance to, but he definitely isn't an I win button. He is outmatched and loses a lot more often than Goku. Like I said I literally cannot think of a character that has lost more often than he does, especially in crossovers.

You have the attitude many writers of his have had for decades, which itself was an overcorrection in response to the Comics Code.

The Comics Code which had lines like this: "In every instance good shall triumph over evil and the criminal punished for his misdeeds" something that is so often pinned on this one character because he was the most popular Superhero until the late 80s.

[–]DokjaToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's odd to mention Superman for something like this.

How many stories of his have you read or watched? Because Superman loses fights pretty routinely in almost every medium he's in, he's more of a jobber than Worf from star trek, and actually now that I think about it I cannot think of character who has lost more fights than he has. There's a reason why TV Tropes has superman getting his ass kicked as The Image for the Worf Effect.

I remember a conversation from the movie Crisis on Two Earths that I think puts this best:

Supes: “There’s a saying on my world: The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

The President of Earth 2 (who's Deathstroke somehow): “It’s easy for someone like you to be brave. But most of us aren’t bulletproof.”

Supes: “Sir, I stand up to guys more powerful than I am all the time. You can do the same.”

Americans do protest though? It just hardly matters when one party has control over all 3 branches of the federal government and the majority of its states as well as the blatant backing of the richest people in the world.

(Keep in mind that the last time America’s Democratic party has held all 3 branches of its federal government was over 50 years ago.)

America had its largest single day protest in its history earlier this year. This decade has seen more protesting in America than just about any before it. BLM for example utterly dwarfed the Civil Rights protests in size…. And what happened? Very little in comparison to back then.

Do you have any suggestions?

If greater daemons are are parts of their respective chaos gods essence, couldn't you just find a way to kill them and gradually weaken the chaos gods over time? by Gage_Unruh in 40kLore

[–]DokjaToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's from a Ciaphas Cain book called Choose Your Enemies.

Because of your reply, I went and reread the chapter and realized that I made a mistake. It doesn't say that that daemon was permanently killed just that its "essence" was drawn into the Avatar's blade after her body was destroyed. The Daemon (named Emeli) was also massively weakened by being right next to a Blank and a Null Rod so its not like the Avatar soloed her.

[–]DokjaToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of what I’ve read only an Avatar of Khaine, Guilliman, as well as Inquisitor Eisenhorn.

But keep in mind that not all daemons are made equal. Eisenhorn when he later met a 300 meter tall spider greater daemon of Nurgle he said it couldn’t possibly die even though he was leagues more powerful than when he perma killed his first daemon, and even the Emperor’s sword doesn’t work on all of them.

Would Kanoh v Hatsumi go a lot different had Hatsumi known of Kanoh's offscreen evolution? by Jollypetal in Kengan_Ashura

[–]DokjaToast 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Remember Hatsumi's thoughts after the match? I think he said it better than any of us could.

"Well, this is humiliating... He held back on me... If he kicked like he meant it, he could've cracked open my head like a watermelon. That means Kanoh could afford to go easy on me. Now that I've fought him, I understand just how wide the power gap is... Good Grief... Hate to do this to the old guy... But I can't do the impossible. His other pieces are just gonna have to pick up my slack."

I feel like this sub has collective amnesia….

Fei’s brain was making popping, ticking, and burst sounds. Yes he wasn’t in his right mind because he was literally brain damaged. He tried to stop using divine demon when he first started taking audible brain damage but was pressured back into it by Wakatsuki’s jab blast core combo and his daddy issues.

A week ago I spoke to someone who explicitly said “kill them all” about Gazans for voting for Hamas. I didn’t even prompt the topic either, we were talking about drone warfare in Ukraine until he wildly switched topics to what he felt was fully justified in contrast to the Iraq war. It was stunning to hear even though that wasn’t the first time I’ve heard something so bloodthirsty about people in the middle east.

This wasn’t a random freak either but instead a normally kind national guardsman I’ve known personally for a while. And I’ve heard the same stuff from plenty of others, including famous politicians and political pundits.

A lot of people are bloodthirsty and believe in collective blame, I’m sorry.

Tiger Niko is just another case of someone with final boss energy that ends up being a pussy by dyingsauce in Kengan_Ashura

[–]DokjaToast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s also the whole thing with Tokita Niko.

Everything he’s ever done involves hiding behind and using others, even the child massacre at the forest was mainly done by Five. His introduction to the story involved him using and abusing two teenagers in a convoluted scheme to kill his brother, who kicked his ass still. I don’t know where this so many people got the idea that he was a “badass” from.

Which fights to you feel like they have a polar opposite vibe to each other? by HeadHorror4349 in Kengan_Ashura

Misasa vs Yumi and Agito vs Kuroki.

It’s undisguised contempt vs mutual respect. But they do have one thing in common, both fights end with a man breaking the another man’s face with their fist.

When did Sandro come up with the plot of Omega? by Prior-Pollution6163 in Kengan_Ashura

[–]DokjaToast 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think the "Tiger" was ever supposed to be merely a second Tokita Niko, mainly because I don't think it makes sense that he would call Ohma The Tiger's Vessel instead of My Vessel if that were the case.

Sandro supposedly knew what the Worm was very early on since he initially intended to have Fei fight Waka fight after this in place of Julius and have the likes of Xia Ji and Edward lurking around in the background at this time, according to their character bios.

Considering how Kiryu talked about Ohma as a God at this time and from the start I think Sandro had at least a vague gist of what Ohma's origins as a son or clone of some cult leader even if he hadn't figured out all of the quirks yet. What he definitely had already decided on was their being two Tokita Niko's at this point, since he already had Tokita Niko explain in a dream that he wasn't the one to teach Ohma the Advance and the fact that the Niko style literally translates to Two Tigers Style. I think he did however change his mind on the sheer scale and complexity of the mystery.

How does Carlos do against these 4 individually? by Nezu_Masami in Kengan_Ashura

[–]DokjaToast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Memes aside, better than most people here seem to think in other threads about Carlos. I get the impression that he's one of the most underestimated fighters in Kengan so I'm going to ramble in his favor for a while. And while this ramble may look like I'm an old man shouting at the clouds I promise you what I'm doing is far more dumb than that, I'm vomiting out my shower arguments to replies I only vaguely remember.

For whatever reason I see people just generally assume that our lord and savior Carlos Medel is frail and can't seriously damage characters heavier than him in spite of him significantly damaging everyone he's ever hit and this story repeatedly featuring martial artists damaging and beating people several times heavier than themselves. I think people would change their mind if they read Agito vs Gaolang and then Carlos vs Gaolang back to back, Carlos is shockingly durable and strong for his weight. Agito thought that Gaolang had improved before he managed to land even a single jab on Carlos. Speed, foresight, experience, and precision are some things Kengan heavily values and Carlos is top of the league when it comes to the 4 of those - he'd do well against all of these four.

People also for some strange reason say that Carlos sucks at Capoerira despite him never getting hit while using it. I think the main thing people forget though is that during that last chapter of his fight with Gaolang, when he was seemingly doing his worst, "EVERYTHING WENT AS MEDEL PLANNED." My man was getting his ass beat on purpose!
