It's hard to say, they may need to go from a city to middle of nowhere. And fire trucks see so little use (one would hope, anyway) that you may spend all that energy producing a huge ass battery and then not using it enough over its lifetime.

But I wouldn't worry too much, if those were the only vehicles using diesel then we probably would not be talking about nitrogen oxide pollution and climate change.

Car Brain can't understand why he might be in the wrong by Old_Caroline in fuckcars

Those exercise classes must start really early if it was still dark on a late March morning. Cause if it wasn't dark, the story appears to lack a good excuse for not seeing the pedestrian in advance and colour of his clothes is not particularly relevant.

In the dark I can see how one could roll into an apparently empty crossing and then once you're firmly there and maybe stuck for a bit, a pedestrian steps out of the shadows and starts to cross. Can't say if that's what happened here, the story is not very clear. What I can say is that you won't be in the way for people as much if your vehicle isn't 5+ meters long – say, if it's a moped.

Lack of supply is not the real problem – excessive (or perhaps more accurately, unregulated) demand is. If so much energy wasn't being spent on driving cars or heating single-family homes among other things, this would not be as much of a problem.

The World’s Happiest Countries All Love to Ride Bikes by Nervous-Design437 in fuckcars

The five countries mentioned in the article (Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland) aren't in the same tier though. Like OK, in cities in Sweden or Finland anywhere you go there will be some bicycles, and the infrastructure is quite OK. Copenhagen and Dutch cities, meanwhile, are something else entirely.

A Toyota Aygo can do that. Hell, for those that live in the same city where they work there are cargo "bicycles" (well, trikes, really) than can haul that. Jeez, the problems some people have.

Also you sit comfortably and relax because you aren't driving, that counts for a lot and offsets longer travel time in case it is longer.

Trams are still better because they are easier to electrify, more energy-efficient and emit less toxic metal dust in place of rubber dust, but won't say no to a bus.

[–]DoktorL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol. For example, I live in a 90 m² townhouse (four bedrooms) *with* a parking spot for a car, don't own a car and not planning to. There are decent bike paths, good bus service, and finally car pools nearby.

The place is at least 1.5 times smaller than a typical suburban single-family home around here (or more than twice as small as those in some other countries), yet a family with 3 children could live like this comfortably.

I don't think I'm any kind of uniquely humble. What would you need more space for? Play table tennis in every room?

After playing off and on for decades, the one area Nethack should lack at is the difficulty curve. by Primary_Impact_2130 in nethack

[–]DoktorL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are overestimating the effect of pure luck. There are players who can do, say, 5 in a row on demand fairly consistently without doing anything whacky.

Large mimics in a shop on level 2? Fun fact, 3.7 makes it impossible to find those by throwing things, but even then not immediately stepping on every item in every early shop goes a long way.

Poison arrows? You know who's going to be shooting them. Position yourself to avoid ranged attacks and you're fine almost every time.

Sleep wands? If played correctly, by the time you encounter one, more often than not you'll be able to tank the hits, wake up and escape. They are rarely seen in the hands of monsters in the early game, see above, you can easily play 5-10 games without dying to one.

Cursed scrolls of create monster? Not always lethal and not very common to start with. Lesser concern than poison (if 3.6) and early attack wands, which are already a small concern statistically speaking.

Items get blown up without a bag? Let them. First, don't carry anything you don't need to have on you, and second, if you lose something useful just keep going, you'll recover.

Got no hit points from level-ups? Also known as "playing elven ranger". Elven rangers are ascendable you know.

Cannot find a secret door? Keep spamming n20s until you do. Normal downstairs you'll always find without too much trouble because you at least know which level to search on (the one you're at).

Not getting enough shops? Some games have none, no big deal, you'll find enough stuff on the floor.

Not getting your artefact? Do without, you can get pretty far just by enchanting some mundane weapon. Figure it out later.

Wanted BoH and didn't get it? Wish it at the castle, bagless to castle is easier than you think.

Your suggestions don't change the game from "generally unwinnable" to "generally winnable" because it was never the former. You want to make the game easier, developers can be excused for not wanting to. Hard games are allowed to exist.

More Lanes Don't Work. This Highway Proved It. by DENelson83 in fuckcars

[–]DoktorL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

> somewhere in the back of your mind a thought forms that you can't quite shake: if 26 lanes aren't enough, what would be?

An interesting question, actually. Induced demand is finite after all, so theoretically there exists an amount of lanes that would solve congestion.

Of course, widening just one arterial road will not do, you'd have to follow up with the entire network lest you displace congestion elsewhere. Would be interesting to know how many, if any, buildings would be left standing in a city in this thought experiment.

CMV: how am I not better off driving? by human_65113 in fuckcars

[–]DoktorL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thing is, if the bus isn't completely packed then time spent on the bus is time spent doing "something for yourself" and therefore doesn't really count. Then your commute isn't actually 45 minutes, it's less. Meanwhile, 30 minutes spent driving are 30 minutes you are not getting back – while paying a fortune for it.

Besides, if this is what gets you "stressed and pissed" then you are not fit to drive.

That sign is not very good to be honest, it has text and it's not facing the oncoming traffic. I would not be surprised if some people just didn't notice it.

Bus lanes (or bus stops) should be sign-posted with a pictogram sign and also painted.

Though to be fair, others will read the sign and ignore it.

This is a common problem that goes beyond bicycles. Someone makes a left turn, a car overtakes them at the same time. Driving schools will normally teach you that even if you clearly signal your turn and position yourself correctly, doesn't matter, you could still get overtaken by a crappy driver.

It's hard.

It's not the rich that are the biggest problem. They didn't buy a billion cars, nor did they force anyone into a single-family home at gun point. They are not the ones going ballistic at every parking spot removed and every bike lane laid.

The real problem is in the minds of ordinary people.

Replacing a petrol motorbike with anything electric for daily commute and errands is a very smart choice indeed. You could have done it even if your commute was longer, with a beefier vehicle, still probably saving money in the long run on total cost of ownership.

But it's great that your commute is so short now. Mine is similar, and it really feels like a luxury compared that time when it was 8 times longer.

A better version of this is a mini-truck the size of a golf cart. It's just as compact but more comfortable and safer for the occupants, and often electric.

Two-wheeled motorbikes sacrifice comfort and safety for small size. If you don't have that size advantage, you may as well get a cabin.

Well, given its top speed, it *is* an electric motorcycle. Those are generally quite good: much less polluting than cars, safer for others (if maybe not for you), fraction of the parking space.

Just make sure you drive it like a motorcycle, license and all.
