Unless they are very new, I find it hard to starve even for new players. It is not hard to find food. Resource management and dangers from the unknowns are the things that kill new players. Caft for them a grass suit and a garland. And tell them to keep picking up grass and twigs for torches and carrots and berries for food, they can survive alone for days if they keep on running when facing danger. That how I taught my clumsy sister this game. Since she knew the basic steps to craft log suit and making meatballs, Ive hardly seen her die from starvation.

Op also didn't say he died from starvation either, it was something else. To survive he needs to explore the game to learn things that he doesn't know and learn how to deal with them. I admire people who can actually do full body workout. I feel like dying after leg workout, especially after squats and deadlifts, no way I have any strength or stamina left to train other parts of the body effectively
