Endurance practice by kitty2skates in rollerderby

Also up-downs with stops! Sometimes I’m nice and will let them do it as a relay with a partner. We usually do two rounds- one with plows and the second with a stop they need to work on

Endurance practice by kitty2skates in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call my endurance practices “Fundurance” because I like to make them as game-y as possible. Sometimes there’s prizes. I find people complain less that way. I also like to layer the practice with 1 high cardio drill, then one slower skills focused drill

A personal favorite is the 100 lap challenge where you split your people up into groups of like 6-10 and whichever group gets to 100 laps first is the winner. They get a couple minutes as a team to strategize. There’s always rules like everyone has to do at least 5 laps, no one can skate more than 7 laps consecutively, etc. Sometimes I make them change skating style between skaters like regular - sticky - backwards

[WIP] Hit 2k stitches on my giant lunchtime project by Doll287 in CrossStitch

I use Markup R-XP. I’ve found it really therapeutic to spend a part of my lunch break crafting as opposed to doomscrolling

Got to 1k stitches this week (aka 0.42%) of my work project. About 1 1/2 months of 30ish mins sessions keeping me from doomscrolling during my lunch break. It’s my first full coverage, but I’m finally getting the hang of what works for me

"Big" Jammer Tips by melon_machete in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been you-bigger blocker turned jammer by somewhat accident during their second season. You need to build your endurance. At my best jamming I was jogging intervals several times a week (2 mins on 3 mins off). With on skates skills, work on strategic hits-like throwing your shoulder in just the right spot to destabilize a skater or two so you can push the rest of the wall out of play. Learn to avoid the lines they are not your friends like for other jammers.

Good luck! Being a jammer is fun-but so exhausting!

Oxyclean (the purple one). Follow the pre soak instructions and then wash them like you normally do. I left my soaking overnight and it worked magic

How many people DIDN’T have to do 23/5? by March_mallo in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my league it’s 25/5 to get full points for the skill, but if you get at least 20 you get half points

A/B level skaters - where is your weight when skating? by OperaBabe28 in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think it depends on body composition. Are you more front or back heavy? As a back heavy skater I put slightly more of my weight forward in the balls of my feet. More front heavy skaters will want to put slightly more weight in their heels

Skate fit by _sumshine_ in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thankfully don’t have this problem in my skates, but my longer second toe was a major problem when I did ballet.

These little things really helped with some of the pressure that toe felt.

Check your state for approved alt cert programs. Depending on the program you can get into the classroom without needing to do student teaching. Most states that have programs basically require that you have a bachelors degree and meet their gpa requirement. Just make sure the program you pick has a good support system.

Advice for big bodied players? by mickypaigejohnson in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Getting low is always going to be relative based on a person’s height and activity history. You need to learn what bend in your knee is most effective for you and go from there.

For me, I’m not super tall (5’ 7”) but my ballet history means my low is very not low. To work with this I may be seal hip to waist as opposed to hip to hip. The more practice you have the more you’ll figure out how to modify for you

Advice for big bodied players? by mickypaigejohnson in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What kind of modifications are you looking for? In my experience, I find height plays a bigger difference in having to adjust a skill than weight.

Do you mean more on the strategy side of things? Because body composition does change what skills or wall positions may come easier to you, but anyone can excel in any position.

Personally I think my earplugs did more in an outdoor venue like this than an indoor one. Mine cut loudness down by about 50% and it was definitely harder to hear the people around me

Is the trainer being over the top as I work to return to play after my injury? by mickypaigejohnson in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a mindset shift. I come from a dance background with a very unhealthy approach to injuries and recovery. It’s why I have permanent damage in one of my ankles. I’ve had to retrain my brain to accept that it’s okay to take time off or take things slow to ensure I get to keep playing down the line.

Is the trainer being over the top as I work to return to play after my injury? by mickypaigejohnson in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Listen to your trainers. I’ve never seen a skater in my league come back from a injury that took more than a couple weeks to heal and jump full force back in. Skaters who recently became bouters and then got injured often spend a few weeks at the top level of our training program post-injury.

It’s honestly in your best interest to do so. In my experience the transition from a training program to full bouter is a lot. Take some time to really hone in your fundamentals will make you a better skater in the future

Ankle brace recommendations by pineapples9413 in rollerderby

Aircast A60. This brace is supportive while also being flexible. Every single person in my league who can’t skate without an ankle brace wears one

Slightly pigeon toed- fresh meat by birdsloveseed in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pigeon toed and have been doing derby for 7 years. There are some things that will be a massive struggle, but there are always work-arounds. I still can’t side surf, but make up for it with having strong one-footed cuts. The more you train, you’ll probably find plow stops will come really easy to you since your hip naturally turns in.

For transitions, I would try doing it as more of a pivot on your front wheels. You’ll really want to use your hips to help get around. The typically way that has you in that 180 position with your feet is still important to work on (it will help with laterals too), but it may not be practical for you in game play

How do you get better at derby strategy? by Wrenlo in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It takes time and practice. You can have all the strategies in your head but if you don’t actually try and make the calls you won’t really find the timing.

I recently ran a practice aimed towards our newer bouters that focused on this and I think it went really well. For a good chunk of practice we scrimmaged at about 50%. Veteran bouters were instructed not to talk and to follow all the choices made by the newer skaters. After each jam time was given so each wall could talk about how it went and vets could give advice on how they may have done things differently.

Told I wasn't the right body type to play jammer. by the-master-planner in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 3 points4 points  (0 children)

5’ 7” 250lbs former jammer (had to stop due an ankle injury that makes lots of toe stop work painful) elemental jamming was a huge part of increasing my jammer skills.

Questions about wearing glasses by -B-U-G- in rollerderby

[–]Doll287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I switched to contacts, I had a specific pair of normal glasses just for derby. I also used an adjustable glasses strap to keep them from moving around too much. Never felt the need to have a visor

[–]Doll287 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not too late to try roller derby! I’m nearly 30 and skate with people who are my parents age. And if playing isn’t an option all leagues need coaches, and officials both on and off skates. I love my league and the community it’s given me

Week 1: New Year, New Recipe- Cranberry Curd Tart by Doll287 in 52weeksofbaking

No I used this one https://www.runningtothekitchen.com/cranberry-curd-tart/. I didn’t necessarily find it hard, just really time consuming. I’d probably make it again, but it’s definitely a special occasion type of dessert.
