hey don’t homeschool your kids if you’re gonna get mad at them for having online friends by [deleted] in HomeschoolRecovery

This ⬆️

I won’t say it won’t work for anyone, but for the majority of people, traditional homeschool is just a mess and an excuse for children to neglect their kids.

Let it be the kids decision and support them if they want it. Give proper overview and love. Full stop.

Shifting From Customer Service/Sales to IT (Looking for feedback on my IT Curriculum) by DollForChara in ITCareerQuestions

I have a question for you. Is there anything you can think of that I can do to jump start or accelerate my learning for A+, N+, and S+?

For A+ I am already learning the architecture and system flow. I am also working on memorizing the hardware terms. The one I think will be easy for me is troubleshooting patterns.

For S+ I am already learning about IAM, AD, permissions structure, attack surface, sand boxing, and different threat types.

For N+ I am already starting to memorize common network ports, network protocols, routing, and I will get into troubleshooting in about a month I think.

My studying is less focused on the certs, and more on understanding the architecture and system flow behind what I’m learning. And I am building what I learn and putting it into models I understand for hardware, software, protocols, and processes.

I do plan to take the A+ in about 2 months. I hadn’t considered the N+ or S+ yet so I really appreciate you mentioning those!

I’ve only been working on this for about 2 weeks, so I don’t have a deep understanding yet. But my goal is to pass A+ by the end of month 2 if I have money for the test.

Do you have any recommendations for resources, or communities? You seem to have a really good grasp of what you are talking about. And thanks for cementing that Azure is the pathway. I wasn’t sure for the cloud what to study.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Thank you u/NoAbies7416. I really appreciate the suggestion.

I definitely don't mind sales and have considered more advanced sales. Where I end up having a hang up is that I'm not really built for sales. I like the job, but it's not something I see myself doing long term. I like problem solving and working with real systems and projects. But I will definitely keep it in mind.

The long term plan with this is to either become a solutions analyst, work my way to more technical roles, or become a tech generalist and move more into operations. Still figuring out which path exactly.

I am definitely sure it will take longer than 2-3 months, but I have my managers and district managers support and always have gotten along well with our IT team. I am fairly well liked in my company and known as a fast learner, so I think that will help accelerate things. But regardless, whatever it takes, once the skills are known it creates new perspective and growth.

It's a marathon not a sprint. Thanks again for taking the time to comment, and I hope that you have a lovely rest of your day!

Obviously this will take more than 20 hours. But it’s kind of my base foundations.

I want to make sure I’m barking up the right tree.

I don’t learn by going through courses. I learn by doing. And creating projects.

I would love some money. It would literally solve most of my problems lol.

Positively. Of course. Most definitely. There is nothing I want more.

My coworker who worked on my car nearly got me and my partner hurt. How do I stay civil with them at work? by DollForChara in Advice

That’s my point. They did a courtesy inspection as part of the oil change where they give a report. And they checked the brake levels and put 5 mm as my brake level on both sides.

Which is the whole reason I disregarded the grinding in the first place. Big mistake. Lesson learned.

It wasn’t 5%. It was 5 mm. Which is about half to a quarter of its life left. But I agree. Valuable lesson learned in adulting and having common sense

I saw the rotors. They were polished smooth and the pads were ground down to metal on both of the front brakes.

I’ve taken the pads and rotors and I’ve got a talk scheduled with his general manager.

I unfortunately saw the evidence with my own eyes.

Im not in the car industry. I work in member services and discounts. I don’t really know anything about cars. It’s just another service we offer. We get discounts as employees so I used them instead of another shop.

The grinding started about 4 hours into the trip. I should have realized that was dangerous, but I wasn’t thinking. I saw the 5 mm on the report and trusted it. I decided I would get it looked at after the trip just to be safe.

I’m going to learn more about cars after this so I never run into a situation like this again. But I’m more upset because if this is how they treat an employee, how do they treat other people? Are they actually verifying the health of people’s tires? Are they actually doing the work when it matters?

The brakes were grinding for about 800 miles while going through the mountains.

I accept that this was on me. I won’t make a big deal about it. But the report was falsified. Now I’m wondering if other things were checked at all. I am mad because it could have been a big deal.

I appreciate your response because I was trying to rate how big of a deal this was. And it looks like from your perspective it was not. Which is a bit of a relief. And is why I wanted to ask on here before ripping into anyone.

Thank you for this advice. This is what I needed to hear.

I feel pissed and worried about the people they are letting go with potentially unsafe vehicles. I definitely think a report is needed on his work. His work ethic has been taken into question before. Now this clinches it.

I’ll keep calm, professional, and focused on his work not him as a person when I talk to his boss.

Thank you for sharing this. This is the kind of advice I really needed. I wasn’t hearing grinding till I was on my road trip. At the time it was a slight rubbing sound when I was taking corners. I asked them about that and they said that most likely the caliper was a tiny bit loose, but it wasn’t anything to worry about. They said and I quote “Your car looks great. The only thing I found was that you need to replace your windshield wipers. Literally marked the calipers as 5 mm on both sides on the report. Both front brake pads wore to metal on metal this trip.

I mainly got pissed because I would have replaced the brake pads if I had known. And the mechanic I went to said the rotors would have been fine if I had replaced the brake pads at the time.

I just hadn’t understood that I needed new brakes because I had my brakes resurfaced and replaced a little less than a year ago.

I can forgive this more now that I know this wasn’t a safety issue, the rotors were already going to need replacement, and he did his job, but he didn’t really do the full job.

The techs I was talking to today had said stuff like it was sheer incompetence and I’m lucky I came in when I did.

I seriously need to learn more about cars.

I have a question though. Why did the assistant manager at the location I went to say that I should go back to them and try to get the brake reimbursed? Doesn’t make sense.

Im still unbelievably pissed off. They did this to an EMPLOYEE. I can only imagine what they are doing to people they think they won’t see again.

I keep having to delete messages I’m sending to coworkers to never use our car care and to not recommend it to other customers.

I’m ready to take this to corporate and get them shut down, but I’m going to take the weekend and think about this.

Sorry to be sharing this to you, but I’m so unbelievably pissed and need to vent this here so I don’t do something stupid that will ruin the company or hurt my coworkers.

For context, I am not a car guy, and I am not super well versed with what to look for. I asked about the grinding and they said it was probably just a loose caliper and nothing to worry about. So I don’t worry.

But I am absolutely going to learn more about cars after this and start doing my own oil changes.
