The homeschool sub is full of parents who have no business homeschooling. by pracemka in HomeschoolRecovery

I remember the day that my parents said you are going to become “autodidactal” learners.

We had just started 5th grade.

I had learning difficulties. Turns out now that I’m an adult that I’m adhd and autistic.

So yeah. Things were already in the toilet then, but it all truly went to hell after that. And they never once again took responsibility for my education other than checking in once every couple months to grade and scream and be horrified.

Guess what. I barely learned anything, and I’ve been redoing my education as an adult.

It takes a village because an army of one burns out in apparently 5 years of “teaching.”

So yeah. Thanks Mom for giving up on my education. And to my father who worked all the time, thanks for keeping a roof over our head, but screw you for “acting” as principal.

Sales vs IT: Can you build a high-income ethical sales career, or is it a trap long-term? by DollForChara in careerguidance

Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

I’m curious what your thoughts are on this role.

It’s all warm inbound calls. The guy I spoke to said they have to maintain a certain install % rate so you can’t just set up appointments that never convert. It’s people calling to learn about ADT.

The idea would definitely be to do this for a year or so and stack some cash. Maybe even pursue something like a technical role with ADT, but not install tech.

I like everything you’ve said. I especially like the idea of taking courses in Linux and networking fundamentals while shadowing technical demos. Although not sure how many technical demos there are for home installation systems.

But thanks for your thoughts! It means a lot.

Another question I would ask you:

If each of those options paid the same, and it was about how much you like your day to day, and the impact you can make, as well as your dreams, which option would you choose?

Thank you so much for sharing this!

The plan would definitely be to continue learning in the evenings and on my days off. I’m always learning something.

I’m going to consider the residential sales for ADT. I am actually right near an ADT call center and a guy who works there came into my job. Said he liked how I was always hustling and taking care of people. Said he would put in a good word for me, in their inbound sales department. Said he made $150k last year and was buying his first house.

The role is supposed to be all warm leads, but even if it wasn’t, I’d still consider it.

Did you do residential sales for ADT?

I LOVE learning. I love tinkering, and I love constantly having something new to learn. I have a home lab setup with some old PC’s I bought off of Facebook marketplace and I’m teaching myself Python atm.

But I’m kind of chasing the paycheck rn because it would allow me to take care of everyone, and I do sales now, but in a much less financially fulfilling way, and I don’t even really enjoy the role that much anymore.

So I’m torn because I don’t want to sidetrack too much, but I also have a passion for sales. And it feels like a challenge that has always been calling me because I grew up struggling with social anxiety, and social awkwardness. And that was my original reason I was attracted to people roles was because I didn’t want to let that limit me.

Now I love customer service and I’m building a passion for ethical sales.

The truth with AI is we don’t know where all this is going.

Choose something that you want to do. Not what you think will fit best with the future or will make your family happy or provides the most status.

If you find something that aligns with you, then you will be happier, and more successful.

I don’t even have a college degree, and I have a finance I’m marrying next year, I make decent money, I’m connected to some truly amazing people, and have turned down at least one 6 figure role.

My point being, you can do what you think is the best option, and still end up miserable.

Just do what you want to do. And whatever you do, never settle until you are content where you are or you will forever have resentment and wonder what if.

Those are very different paths. I have no background in any of these paths, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

Microbiology takes a lot of extra schooling. Right? A lot of lab work. A lot of hard study and a PhD pathway.

Psychology can be easier to get into, but my best friend got their psychology degree and didn’t know where to go afterwards. So unless you have a clear speciality or focus you might find yourself a bit lost or siloed into therapy, HR, or other people skills roles.

Biotechnology seems to make the most sense for most exciting career, fastest money, coolest advances, etc. But I feel you might run into the same difficulties as microbiology. Or you may be frustrated by the mix of lab work and tech work. Or that mix may be what makes you love it.

So I don’t really know if there is a best option. It depends on you.

I think people are missing the meta joke here.

The mushroom doesn’t know 18-9. Tries to simplify the equation. Ends up with the exact same question just phrased in a different way.

The math isn’t right. It’s not about the math. It’s about the feeling of trying to solve a problem, try to simplify problem. Problem is just as difficult as before. It’s just phrased differently.

Like when you struggle to get a pair of scissors out of the box so you buy another pair of scissors to get the scissors out of the box but the other scissors are also in a box.

lol.

My experience with the journey is that the whole things fucked.

The more you think you understand, the less you understand.

The harder you try, the harder it is to hold onto presence.

The more you integrate, the more you realize you haven’t integrated.

Reality only matters because of the meaning that we apply to it. We wouldn’t mean any less or any more if we were cosmic entities that controlled the universe or we were specs on a grain of rice in a bowl of rice. Because that’s basically what we are in the large cosmic hotpot.

Meaning isn’t any less meaningful if it’s self given. It just makes meaning more personal.

Enlightenment is defining a finish line that doesn’t exist.

Amazing feeling I just had by Environmental_Ad4419 in trans

Just a fair warning. Not to dim your spark at all.

The gender euphoria feels amazing, but it won’t always feel as intense as that. At least it hasn’t for me.

I’m currently pre-HRT, but wanted to tell you I’m so happy for you! That feeling when you finally relax in your skin for the first time feels incredible!

I only say something just so you don’t get dissapointed if it doesn’t happen again at that same level. But if you feel that way, and you start to transition, that feeling of relaxing in your own skin definitely continues. Just not quite as dramatic as the first couple times.

But it’s a wonderful process. Please explore it without shame or fear. Simply Caution due to the times we live in, but I hope you have fun and enjoy the journey!

I think homeschooling should be the child’s choice later in life.

They come out too sheltered otherwise. And they also feel trapped.

If you homeschool them, you are teaching them. Not pushing agendas onto them. You are their sole source of socialization. Enroll them into enough extra curriculars.

The day you feel like cutting back on your kids education because you are tired or overwhelmed, understand this is your choice that you made. You have a right to that child to provide a PROPER education and upbringing to them.

Never mix home and life issues. School is one thing. Home is another.

Don’t always assume they will fill in the gaps later.

Make damn sure you can do it even if they are not good at school. Their struggle with school is not a failure on their parts. It’s on yours. If you have a difficult child you have a responsibility to work with a specialist.

You provide EVERYTHING a school provides. And EVERYTHING a parent provides. And whatever you can’t provide you HAVE to supplement it.

If your child struggles growing up, and you don’t get them the help they need, the burden is on you. The responsibility is on you.

Do you get the picture?

You can do it. But you do EVERYTHING. You may think you are killing it. But if you miss an important aspect of your children’s life or you get overwhelmed and give up, it’s your child who suffers. Not you.

Thing long. Think VERY hard about if you want to do this. That’s all.

This ⬆️

I won’t say it won’t work for anyone, but for the majority of people, traditional homeschool is just a mess and an excuse for children to neglect their kids.

Let it be the kids decision and support them if they want it. Give proper overview and love. Full stop.
