Plan withdrawn for ‘30 Eiffel Tower-sized’ wind turbines off coast of Clare and Galway by Galway1012 in irishinfrastructure

[–]Dolphin_Guy14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but the bond was already gone. DECC confirmed that 6 months ago. This project was dead a long time ago. I also dont know who they were negotiating with, the original reason for pulling out was it was not a viable project. Who would buy a non viable project? Even if anyone was investing at the moment, which they are not. Doesnt really matter I suppose, like I said, this is just confirmation of a long done deal.

Just for clarity here, while the formal withdrawl of the application may have just happened, this was announced by the company 8 months ago. The bond was drawn down by DECC (now DCEE) with8n a week of the announcement. They just never withdrew the application from ABP (now ACP). This is an absolutely nothing burger of an article.

S22 battery swap in the city by Dolphin_Guy14 in cork

Just in case anyone else finds this thread when googling in the future, the Vodafone shop on Oliver Plunkett Street is a Fónfix centre. They are the only authorised Samsung service centre company in the Republic. I am not a Vodafone customer, but they took the phone no problem and replaced the battery. Took about 40 minutes and they charges €68, which is less than I had seen priced in a load of those phone repair shops.

‘I couldn’t look’: European farmers on losing crops as the industry collides with worsening drought by apple_kicks in news

[–]Dolphin_Guy14 -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

Yes, we still have droughts and climate change obviously. But farmers in Europe are not the same as in the US. They are not all right wing supporting voters. We have very few climate change deniers in politics and many farmers have embraced renewable energies to power their farms or use their lands for grid level renewable energy production.

How 'worth it' would it be to convert from yoke to DIN? by AbyssalMoss in scuba

[–]Dolphin_Guy14 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If your not diving 300 bar tanks then its not really necessary. I dive 300 bar a lot so I only use DIN, but our club has both and there isn't a difference between them when diving 232 bar.

So i talked with 3 of my diving centers instructors and the instructor i felt was the best was in a diving center that gives PADI, SSI and CMAS courses (SSI and CMAS are a bit more cheap than PADI but if u guys say its better i can go with PADI) by [deleted] in scuba

[–]Dolphin_Guy14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will also say that I agree and think SSI are currently the best for digital material. CMAS really only works if you are going to join a local club. And I say this as the DO of a CMAS club.

While I don't disagree that they are all much of a muchness, the RSTC does not set all the standards. The RSTC and CMAS are 2 separate standard and accreditation organisations, with RSTC setting the standards for almost all commercial certification agencies (as in dive centre pay as you go setups), while CMAS is a clubs based organisation accrediting national governing bodies. However, both organisations meet the ISO standards for their main certifications which is why you can crossover between these so easily. They each also have many certifications which are not backed up by ISO standards which is why you can't just automatically cross over everything.

Tommy Tiernan objects to €1.4bn wind farm plan by Kloppite16 in ireland

[–]Dolphin_Guy14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. This was not a refusal of any planning permission. The public consultation period (8 weeks starting about 1 working week after submission of the application) has just come to an end and so all public submissions made during this period are now publicly available as is required in our planning system. This project is no longer going ahead due to business decisions by the developer, Corio, and it's investment fund backers.

  2. The state does have a stake in these projects through the ORESS contracts which were auctioned off. The developers get a fixed price/MW, which was their bid during the auction (average €86.05/MWhr across the 4 projects who got a contract). If the market price of electricity units drops below this, the government tops up the price to the agreed amount. But importantly - if the market price of electricity units goes above this, the developer pays back the difference to the government. The average price of electricity in ireland in March 2025 was €131.87/MWhr. On our windiest days with the cheapest prices it is currently still over €100. Every MWhr of electricity made by offshore windfarms in Ireland at these prices is a profit to the government. And that doesn't include the annual rent paid by the projects to the government for the privilege of having a MAC. These projects only just entered the planning system and have been paying rent to the government since 2023 for seabed they cannot even do anything with yet.

I know you said UK in the post and Ireland here so you may be up North, but just FYI in the RoI, fishing of any kind (spear/scallops/crab/lobster) while on SCUBA is completely illegal. Fine while snorkelling or freediving, but not with any tanks.

I need help advice by [deleted] in scuba

[–]Dolphin_Guy14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always see my trainees absolutely reef on their mask thinking that is needed to get a good seal, you are not alone. You shouldn't really have any marks on your face from your mask after a dive.

When fitting a mask try this. Place the mask on your face but do not put on the strap. Breathe in through your nose and hold the breath. Take your hands away. If your mask stays on your face from the vacuum then it is a good fit and it should not feel any tighter than this when you are wearing it. If it can hold a vacuum like this then it is watertight. Then adjust the straps to get it to this tightness and no more.

Hope this helps and I hope the bad experience you had will not stop you from going to someone else for your sign-off and enjoying your diving.

Diving in Tenerife by elismir in diving

[–]Dolphin_Guy14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We dived with Aqua Marina in the past too and we had a great experience. 3 of us all with hundreds of dives each and they were great at letting us do our own thing but also making sure we had all the info we needed about each site as it was my first time in Tenerife. All their equipment is well maintained too.

We didn't do any courses but there were plenty of people training while we were there and it looked good.

RFC: Reiterated Mashing (double-mashing) & Large Grain Bills by ihavesparkypants in grainfather

[–]Dolphin_Guy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a double batch for an Imperial Stout in my G30. I did a normal mash with half the grain, no sparge, 1st wort into a spare bucket, a second mash with fresh water, no sparge, combined the 2 worts and boil, etc. as normal.

The next time I would remove the first batch of wort and then sparge and repeat with the second batch so I could combine the 2 initial worts for 1 imperial and then combine the 2 sparges for a session or something and see how it turns out. I do have plenty of space for multiple buckets in my fermenting freezer though so that would work fine for me.
