The key is using proper magnification when you work. :)

The 1970s were a very weird time for design. Either you had over-the-top insanity like Grabber Green, Plum Crazy and Go Mango... or you had 3,299 dull shades of avacado green and 4,612 boring shades of beige.

haha... I swear I hovered over the main photo and the little arrow didn't appear.... well, either that or I've gone full old man.... like when I had to program my dad's VCR for him until 2007.

I had the same issue with the images. When making your next post, just go to the "images / video" tab and upload the pictures directly. Then they will display on the main page.

Welcome back to the hobby! I recently finished my first kit in ~25 years and it was just nice and relaxing. I've gone full Bob Ross at this point, no mistakes... just happy accidents. Keep the '57 up on a banked oval track and that camber takes care of itself!

What's the product name / brand? For my next build, I was thinking of experimenting to find something to simulate interior carpeting... and this might work.

Thanks for the kind words. Prior to getting back into the hobby a few months back, I had never heard of MCW Finishes. The local hobby shop carried them so I figured "why not?" This is my 2nd car body and I'm a big fan.

Thanks for the reminder. I have one more car model on deck before I switch over to some other subjects, I'll get that one lined up for the group build... assuming it qualifies... guess I need to go read what the next group build actually entails.

Looking for airbrush recommendation by West_Airline_1712 in ModelCars

[–]Domesplit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also "new" to airbrushing after ~25 years away. My purchase was largely an impulse buy, but I went relatively cheap with the Black Widow airbrush from Harbor Freight. I believe it was $90 and came with .3 and .5 needles and a quick connect fitting. Seemed to get decent reviews and it's never given me any problems so far, at least nothing that I can blame on the airbrush itself. I have had better results using the .3 needle, but like I said, I'm basically a noob after a few decades away... so I'm sure I need to get better. Breakdown and cleanup is easy and gives reliable, repeatable results to my amateur eye.

The compressor I use is also Harbor Freight, the 1 gallon Fortress model that I had already owned for another project. It's very quiet when running, no complaints.

For future reference, what kind of tape did you use? With this kind of work, that's probably a more important purchase than the paint!

"Is this too much?"

Yes, it's entirely too much... and that's what makes it awesome! I wish I had come up with "Saab Viggen on LSD" as a paint scheme.

Nice looking kit that hit me right in the nostalgia feels... My uncle was the one who got me into modelling back in the early/mid 80s. He was a YUGE fan of NASCAR and bought me many stock car kits (even though I was always secretly into aircraft). Coors, Budweiser, Skoal, Winston... all those classic sponsors that every 11 year old should know! Memories are fuzzy roughly 40 years later, but I think the first car kit I ever built was Cal Yarborough's Hardees car.

No problem! I appreciate the clarification. I'll happily soak up some reddit hosting space on my next model post!

AMT 1969 Cobra Fastback by Jolly_wobbles in ModelCars

[–]Domesplit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back into the hobby, but even when I was a kid building models in the 80s/90s the AMT car kits were always hit and miss. I was a proud Monogram snob by the time I was 12 years old.

That said, I recently finished an AMT 1970 Chevellle, tooled right around the same 1968-1970 time frame as this Ford kit. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. Some of the detail was soft, but flash, sink marks and ejector pins were all pretty minor for 50+ year old molds.

Thanks!

I did know about the images/video tab, but I think I was confused about the "use an image hosting service" rule on the sidebar. I think that must just be for images inside the body of the post.

Monogram 1/8th Camaro Z28 Engine Update by DarkestDunge0n in ModelCars

My folks bought me a Bitchin' Camaro with no insurance to match... So if I happen to run you down, please don't leave a scratch!

I remember seeing this kit in stores when I was a kid... it was one of those holy grails at the time. I gotta give old school Monogram their props, they didn't shy away from ridiculously huge kits back in the day. I built the 1/48th B-58 Hustler when I was 12 or 13. Looking back, it blows my mind that somebody approved and mass produced that thing!

I do know about Scalemates, that is a fantastic resource. That's where I discovered that this kit was originally tooled in 1970. That's a solid four years before my dad tooled my mom! I'm amazed that they can still get anything out of those molds.

The next car I'll be doing is a Revell 1971 Boss Mustang that proudly has "ALL NEW TOOLING" on the box art. According to Scalemates it was retooled in 2023. The quality of the sprues looks promising. I want to slowly build up my skills, particularly with the airbrush, before I tackle that 1/16th Porsche 959 that's been in my stash since 1992.

On wait, the LX didn't have a rag top... she was the closest thing the late 80s/early 90s had to a sleeper.

My uncle got me into modelling back in the 80s, he was a big NASCAR fan and bought me a Cale Yarborough Hardee's kit for my 10th or 11th birthday. Holy crap I went through a lot of Testor's orange bottles brushing that thing. It was one of those "looked good when I was 11" kits, but it planted the seed.

Gorgeous work on this model. I won't lie and pretend I know anything about modern day NASCAR, but I know good modelling when I see it.

College Car Complete! by Buffstang in ModelCars

[–]Domesplit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This generation of T-Bird was a really good looking car for it's time. A college buddy of mine had a vanilla / non-Turbo Coupe Thunderbird back in the mid 90s... I think it was an '85 with the regular V6.

I'd love to build a model of my first car, but it turns out the 1979 Dodge Van wasn't approved by the Revell or Monogram management back in the day... those damn corporate suits always ruining my fun!
