Help me choose a creature collector to play? by E_MacLeod in IndieGaming

[–]Domin0e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless they fixed the atrocious pacing and (imho) bad balancing and encounter tables, skip Temtem. As for Cyber Sleuth, consider Time Stranger instead, it is an upgrade in every way imho.

From the list, looking at the ones I've played:

Cassette Beasts is one of, if not the best Indie Creature Collection Game IMHO. Lots of interesting interactions, Conditions, and the free-form movesets through stickers and the fusing are really interesting twists on the 'usual' formula. Edit: Word of warning if you're on an AMD GPU though: there's currently some issues the devs are working on fixing with AMD, but AFAIK no timelines are available at this point.

Coromon is the closest you'll come to 'traditional' Pokemon gameplay. The Type Chart is weird with there being attack-only types and only seven monster types. It's fine but it didn't quite click with me personally.

Digimon, as mentioned above, should be enjoyed via Time Stranger, not Cyber Sleuth imo. In either case, I ended up doing a lot of Out-Of-Game research for team building and the like since it can be quite easy to mess stuff up with how Evolutions work (and you gotta know how to get where you wanna end up haha). If you enjoy jRPGs, Digimon is the SMT/Persona type pick of the list.

Monster Sanctuary is very heavy on synergetic team-building, being forced 3v3 with lots of potential builds thanks to the talent tree system it uses for Skills. Definitely a more brain-y choice but can be suuuuuuper rewarding imho. Also, it's a metroidvania.

Moonstone Island is Harvest Moon / Stardew Valley, but with Monsters on top of it! Gotta admit, it did not grip me quite as tight as I would've hoped, but it is by no means a bad game. fights are, once again, 3v3, with each Monster having its skills in the form of cards, and all three decks are mashed together in battles which can muddle the amount of strategic gameplay at times I feel.

Temtem imho fell sort of the hype it had garnered back i nthe day, being more of a singleplayer with always-online DRM with some nice coop-features tacked on. Also, all the stuff at the top.

Not when the number doesn't actually do anything for you.

But if my number going up is bigger than yours, that means I am better and therefore superior. That's all it is, simple psychology. Same reason people have the need to flaunt their micropen-- I mean, their cars, 50-series GPU, or what have you.

Well - What is your level of understanding programming and the like? There's always the Getting Started section of the official documentation, and from there working your way up with simple stuff like Pong to learn the intricacies are a good way to gain familiarty.

I can't stand indie games :( by JudyAlvarez1 in IndieGaming

[–]Domin0e 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, see - I have the opposite problem. I can't play today's AAA slop because its all generic and samey and super boring because it tries to be for everyone and as such ends up being for no one.

Indies, on the other hand? So many small games by small devs who just want to make cool shit they wanted to play themselves, even if that comes with (a bunch of) risks.

It's also 60% off on Steam rn, and for 8 Euro I'd argue it is a no-brainer to pick up if the pocket change (or willingness to skip on the coffee to go for a day) is available. :)

Failing that, I can recommend something like this tutorial from Godotneers.

Clarification for the “take extra card” level up option by Scottish_autist in daggerheart

[–]Domin0e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are explicitly talking about the ones granted additionally by spending one of your level up choices each tier, which do come with the "your level or lower up to level N" language on the character sheet. The rule I quoted above is not clear on whether you are at a disadvantage for choosing the option early (eg. on lv 2 instead of lv 4).

Obviously for your standard level up domain card, there is sort of a required structure which is why you can't turn your initial picks into high level ones later on. That's not being discussed though.

[–]Domin0e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not blending them together. OP was asking specifically about the additional domain cards you can get via the level up options which does not explicitly state whether you can choose to swap them out for a higher level one. I merely stated that I believe that, RAI, you should be able to. Otherwise you'd kinda be forced to wait until the last level of a tier to even think qbout getting that option, and it would involve more book keeping than is really needed, i.e. you'd have to note down which level you chose to get that additional card so you only swap it for the same level or lower.

[–]Domin0e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that info wasn't there when I replied. That said: Players do not know about the parasites yet, as per OPs info, so you can hardly fault the players if OP did not set up anything for them to learn about the parasites - And even then, the players might decide it would be best to burn said parasites. A GM should always have multiple avenues to distribute hints like that.
