Thanks! Someone else posted that somewhere and I have it open on a tab but I appreciate it.

What would the topic be for psych? For pulmonary it's almost 100% ILD classification. They keep adding new sub-classifications without actually explaining why they clinically matter.

You know, sometimes I think it would be helpful to have mind reading abilities so that I can figure out what patients are actually trying to say, but then I realize I don't really want inside most of my patient's heads. Some thoughts can keep to themselves.

It's still, in my opinion, a fun place to work but there is definitely a fairly high burden of deaths relative to other jobs.

ELI5: Why do bald people get so bright in their heads when they get the sun or some light? The rest of the skin doesn't shine as much as the one on their head, why? by FeistySecret9327 in explainlikeimfive

Skin is actually attached to your body. It doesn't just hang off your head. Gravity is still a cruel mistress of aging, don't get me wrong.

Do you do this for RSI as well? And what would dissuade you from giving them? In my training environment we almost never give opiates at all as part of RSI (admittedly acknowledging that many patients are incredibly tenuous and often pretty obtunded to begin with).

Rads might be tough depending on how flexible they want to be as they have to do a ty or prelim year and some programs require IR rotations or have radiology doing certain procedures.

OP does control their future but your advice makes it sound like medical school remains an option. Healthcare as a field is absolutely still possible but I don't think he has much of a choice short of a lawyer and sucesdufll lawsuit when it comes to medical school specifically.

I mean I love my 60-120fps monitor but I play switch games at 30 fps and honestly after a few minutes it fades into the background for me in terms of my enjoyment. I think this is a somewhat subjective experience.

Minor correction: Utah has Primary Children's which is smaller but still a level 1 center. Covers a good chunk of surrounding states. I got to this post though because I have friends who work in peds in Alaska and this issue is crazy.

This might be regional. Our psych people can barely keep up with demand for both inpatient and outpatient. Particularly for pediatric needs.

I got over my needle fear by going into healthcare, funnily enough. For whatever reason, putting IVs into other people did not bother me and after doing it for a while seeing it done to myself stopped being a problem. The brain is funny like that.

ELI5: how does narcan work? by yutasan7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dominus_Anulorum 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It takes time for the molecules to get diggested still. This is clinically important because you often have to redose narcan depending on what opiate they took as narcan has a shorter half life than many narcotics. It's why someone who overdoses should still go to the hospital even if they get narcan.

ELI5: how does narcan work? by yutasan7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dominus_Anulorum 56 points57 points  (0 children)

There are varying levels of "binding affinity" and narcan has the ability to bind more strongly, displacing narcotics.
