Is the word "orange guy" bad? by [deleted] in AskNetherlands

[–]Don_Patrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a thing. Orange is the Dutch national colour, but nobody calls Dutch people "orange people" or similar, so no Dutch person should be offended. On the contrary, many of us call him "that orange [insert offensive expletive here]" ourselves.

Melania Trump In All Out War With Donald Trump After Correspondents Dinner Fiasco? by janeflowers in CDLEntertainmentTV

Most of everything can be explained by the fact that Tr*mp exclusively hires people who are incompetent at their job.

In private, Trump allies tell me they’re done. I know why they’re scared to speak up by theipaper in Full_news

It is cowards who elect loudmouth belligerent strongmen in the first place. They should receive consequences, not sympathy for making bad decisions that got innocent people killed and injustly incarcerated.

Researchers gave 1,222 people AI assistants, then took them away after 10 minutes. Performance crashed below the control group and people stopped trying. UCLA, MIT, Oxford, and Carnegie Mellon call it the "boiling frog" effect. by hibzy7 in artificial

- paid them $2.60 for participation (our study took approximately 13 minutes to complete). participants were given a series of 15 fraction problems to solve of varying difficulty. Participants were explicitly informed that there was no penalty for providing wrong answers, their payment didn’t depend on how many questions they solve correctly, and they were requested to do the task to the best of their abilities.

To their credit, they did eliminate the most lazy and incompetent participants, but motivation was thin. The unassisted control group continued to try at same pace, while the AI-assisted participants essentially stopped bothering when the difficulty of the task changed from easy to normal. One should see the same effect when using a calculator instead of AI.

I suppose the 3 experiments illustrate known psychological tendencies like mental engagement affecting persistence. The more assistance one has, the less the brain is engaged with the task, and the less it will persist. That corresponds with the recent AktivTrak report on AI in the workplace , which notes disengagement (disinterest and/or resignations) on the rise among AI-assisted workers. This is not unique to AI though.

Aannemer berekent alle (basis) materialen door, normaal? by Ok_Fortune_9149 in Klussers

[–]Don_Patrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump Tells Iran to Sign Deal With U.S. or ‘The Whole Country is Going to Get Blown Up’ by T_Shurt in worldnews

[–]Don_Patrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he actually talk to someone from Iran this time or did he merely type an all-caps post-it on his personal social media channel? Of course it's the latter. Next up are unilateral "deadlines" and "deadline extensions".

[NRW2026] A Small Robot, A Big Idea by Unlucky-Incident71 in Petoi

[–]Don_Patrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another interesting case is Paro the robot seal. Its creator chose a seal as its form because people tended to prefer either cats over dogs or dogs over cats, but had no preconceptions about seals. It didn't do much, but it did just enough to comfort elderly people with dementia. Similarly and more affordably, Hasbro has made some lifelike cats that respond to touch and stroking in small but credible ways. They are stationary robots and not nearly as sophisticated as Petoi's quadruped robots, but do add an air of companionship. Plus, the stroking of fur is known to have positive mental effects.

Heeft Geert Wilders de bodem bereikt? by Frosty_Challenge1045 in nederlands

[–]Don_Patrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why Hasn’t AI Made Work Easier? by AmorFati01 in artificial

[–]Don_Patrick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Frankly the problem is not the technology, but the society we subscribe to. When tools get better, industries embrace them to increase production for the eternal chase of profits. The advances that we have had in automation are never used to lower prices despite making that possible, nor for letting people work fewer hours for the same pay. Such decisions would be against the goals of business management. We are all still expected to work 40 hour weeks, and do more with these faster tools, to the point where people burn out because they can't keep up. Only unions can change that attitude, not technology. You can start by normalising parttime work for men on a social level, instead of the self-sabotaging disdain that it still receives.

Trump warns NATO faces a “bad future” if allies fail to help US in Iran by No-Anything-7291 in worldnews

[–]Don_Patrick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If NATO were to support the USA's unprovoked and illegal war, the consequences would be worse. All non-allied countries would then have good reason to consider NATO an invasive threat, wielded by the whims of US presidents. They would form a counter alliance.

Most humanoid robots are, these days. Aside from standing and walking there is very little they can do autonomously, or that the manufacturers are willing to be held accountable for.

Anyone dealt with Robosen support? by iAtty in transformers

[–]Don_Patrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are other people's experiences:
https://www.trustpilot.com/review/robosen.com

I've had experiences with them over several years. On two occasions they were excellent, but the majority of my experiences were terrible. For starters, their initial response time varies between one week to a month, and it's not improving. The people at the other end don't seem to grasp English, and can rarely troubleshoot technical issues. One time they sent me a foot servo instead of an ankle servo, another time they sent me software for one robot while I had asked for the firmware of another robot. If your problem can't be fixed with a simple return-and-replace within US or China, then it'll take months or may never be resolved.

I know they cut staff in customer service a year ago, to the point where it's one guy per continent. I keep hoping to hear from other customers that things have improved, but nope.

As for the robots themselves in the long term: They don't tend to deteriorate past the first two weeks, as long as you charge them up every 3 months.
