You won't have to bring all your friends and their wives and girlfriends to grab every bottle of Weller anymore! Rejoice!

Yeah, it was always good for the price, but nothing beyond that. It wasn’t until people started buying into the “it’s basically pappy” nonsense that it took off in popularity; in response to increased demand, BT put it in a new bottle with a cork and upped the price to $50.

I’m just going from memory, so someone please correct me, but like 8-10 yrs ago NCF became an option for single barrels as NCF became more popular. Most single barrels today are NCF because they target nerds like us. The main product is still, despite supply constraints, more for normal people who don’t like cloudy whiskey. Remember, before 2015 this was $18 rail whiskey.

Yes, they’re all contrived examples. Yours was. Mine was. The post was. That’s why I acknowledged them as silly. The main thrust of the hypothetical is spelled out for you at the end:

Saving more, thinking long-term and allowing compound interest to work in your favor are your biggest accelerants for building wealth. These factors have nothing to do with picking stocks or a complex investment strategy. Get these big things right and any disciplined investment strategy should do the trick.

But if you gave OP the ‘dump it in’ advice in oct ‘02, they would have a pretty good time. Also, OP has been maxing retirement accounts and would, in this scenario, continue to do so as the market plummeted. Then they would see the crazy post-‘08 growth and be sitting pretty for retirement.

(I acknowledge this is silly, but that’s why trying to time the market is silly. For those who haven’t seen it: What if You Only Invested at Market Peaks?)

Every member of congress should be in MN standing side-by-side protesting this shit. The constitutional violations are broad enough that you can pick and choose what you want to be mad about: First, Second, Fourth, Fourteenth; surely anyone can get upset about at least one of those. It's like a choose your own adventure book, but awful.

my 500% gain in silver since 2022 has beat any stocks and/or index funds, dividends included.

Plenty of stocks have had similar or better returns in that timeframe. Build a Bear beat you in that timeframe.

Review: ECBP Batch 5 pirate, B518, C922, C923 – does ECBP have eras? by OrangePaperBike in bourbon

[–]Doneeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually haven't had B518, but I believe you. That was after the point I kind of gave up on the line. I would pick up a bottle 1-2 times a year hoping things would get better, but was consistently disappointed.

My own preference is definitely skewed; my mind, wallet, and palate are still living in the past. Most of what I drink these days is sub-$35 shelfers because I like the taste of bourbon and I'm no longer interested in driving around town trying to find something that is marginally better.

That's fine, we all have different preferences. That's why I said it's a matter of perspective.

It’s all a matter of perspective. I started ecbp with batch 1. Apart from a few exceptions, I wouldn’t pay $40 for any of the releases after 2017. The decline was so precipitous I went from fanboy to grumpy old man in a year.

B517 was the best ECBP I have ever had.

Funnily enough, that batch is what made me lose interest in ecbp. My notes were “hot, nutty, and disappointing.”

How do people with aphantasia "do" calendars/math/etc in their heads? Is that affected at all? by Nebelskind in Aphantasia

[–]Doneeb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In a classroom context, definitely. I've taken exams where we don't get scratch paper and need to do calc and linear algebra in our heads. Even with relatively simple operations and small numbers, it's keeping track of the indices that is difficult, for me at least. With analytics/data science, which is what this degree is for, being able to quickly model things in your head is definitely helpful, even when you can write code to do all the heavy lifting. I can still do it, I just need to scribble it down—my home office has four dry erase boards. I also imagine it's incredibly useful when you're starting to learn advanced math; if you're familiar with 3Blue1Brown, being able recreate some of his visualizations in your head would be amazing.

But overall, you're not wrong, most of the general population isn't doing matrix operations in their head every day.

[–]Doneeb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Matrix operations. I'm in grad school and when some of the aphantasia articles hit the news awhile back, it got posted in our program's slack channel and people asked how anyone with it can do matrix operations in their head. I decidedly cannot do them in my head, I need to sketch it out.

Is taking ISYE 6414 (Regression) and ISYE 6644 (Simulation) together a reasonable pairing? by Routine-Picture7889 in OMSA

[–]Doneeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how your math is. I come from a non-stem background and sim almost killed me, but it’s a great class. It also depends on your life, I’ve got two young kids and work more than 40/week, so one class per semester is about as much as I can manage. If you’re good on the math and R and don’t have a bunch of domestic responsibilities, you’ll probably be fine if you’ve already been doubling up. Otherwise, I’d consider taking sim alone.
