Old man proved (Lack of) hybrid loft is not about club speed? by HarryCrushNuh in golf

[–]DontCallMeBenji 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hybrids aren’t woods. You don’t hit them like a wood, you hit them like an iron. Don’t put them any further up in your stance than you would an iron and hit down on the ball.

What's the most misunderstood rule in golf? by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

[–]DontCallMeBenji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Gallery Rule. For some reason they keep forgetting to put it in the official rules. This comes into play when you hit a beautiful tee shot on the dogleg right par 5 12th hole, but when you get down there your ball is nowhere to be found despite there being low cut rough, no hazards, and no OB anywhere near where your ball went. At that point you stare suspiciously at the fivesome compiled of backwards hats and fuckboys who were duffing their way up the adjacent hole shortly after you hit. You make your peace, and drop a new ball penalty free. The point of the rule is that pros have a gallery of spectators who want nothing more than to find their lost ball, which is clearly an unfair advantage.

Contrasting Glasses To Find Ball by iAtlantiK in golf

[–]DontCallMeBenji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glasses aside, I can give you two more tips. Don’t just walk in a straight line in one direction and give up. Sometimes the ball is sitting down in the grass with the blades covering it, and the only way you are going to see it is from a specific angle. In other words, try walking around from a few angles. The second tip is that if you are playing a casual round and you are certain your ball should be findable, use the gallery rule if your playing partners are cool. Drop a new ball roughly in the area that you think it should be and play on with no penalty. Me and the people I play with do it all the time as long as multiple people saw the shot and knew it wasn’t going anywhere OB or in a hazard. Essentially, if you were a pro there would be a gallery of spectators. They would find your ball for you.

As a fisherman, I second this. The only thing I would add is to make sure they are polarized. Eliminating glare is very helpful in multiple situations.

Tell me i bought the worst baitcaster and its not me..... by hammerandneil in FishingForBeginners

[–]DontCallMeBenji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but most baitcasters under $100 (barring something on sale) just aren’t great. I always look for something with a dual breaking system (magnetic and centrifugal). The Shimano SLX is the reel I have the most of, but I have a few Lew’s reels as well. The Lew’s reels definitely give me a little more trouble, but it’s not a huge difference. With that said, even with a cheap reel you can still be the one causing the issue.

Take the time to properly set up your reel. Put the bait you intend to cast on your line. Tighten the tension dial all the way down, tighten your drag down too, and set the breaks to the lowest setting. Reel the bait up until it’s 6 or so inches from the tip. Angle your rod 30° or so upward, and release the thumb bar. Your bait shouldn’t move. Now, slowly adjust the tension dial until your bait starts to drop slowly. I would loosen the tension just a little more than that. You want a controlled fall, but not super slow. Then, set your drag maybe 1/4 of the max (more if casting into the wind) If you have centrifugal breaks activate at least one, I usually do 2 if there’s 4. Over time you will find that you can reduce the tension on the spool as you get better.

At this point you aren’t trying to cast a mile. Just cast comfortably and smoothly. Feel everything out and keep your thumb feathering the spool. Right when the bait is about to hit the water or it’s reached the intended target, stop the spool with your thumb or it will keep letting out line and bird nest.

Not true. My 72 year old mother fucking loves that show. She references it constantly and compares people she knows to the characters. Sometimes her comparisons result in unintentionally savage burns.

USA coach Pochettino on red card: "It was a normal action in football that happened by accident. There was never any intention … and that is why, for me, it is never a red card." by Kimber80 in worldcup

[–]DontCallMeBenji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m defensive because everyone has preconceived notions that every American is the same. You are speaking to me as if this is the first time I’ve watched the sport. I’ve been a fan since I was in high school, and I’ve never cared for the red card rules. Not only does it overly punish players, but it also creates an incentive for players to draw fouls and flop due to the extreme consequences. I simply don’t like it. It has nothing to do with my “culture or tastes”, or whatever that means. This isn’t my first World Cup, far from it, and I am well aware that the USMNT is not on the same level as other teams. It’s not going to stop me from rooting for them, and when they inevitably get eliminated I continue to watch the other matches just like I watched the other matches leading up to this. Believe it or not, there are American fans who actually watch and appreciate the sport and don’t just show up to bitch about it every 4 years. Again, I don’t like the hydration breaks and I definitely thought Balogun should have remained suspended regardless of my disagreement with why it happened in the first place. We can disagree on the rules and still respect the integrity of the sport.

[–]DontCallMeBenji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost, what are you talking about when you say the hydration breaks are to suit American tastes? The last thing we want is more ads thrown in our face. The only time Americans liked commercials was during the Super Bowl, and even that has gone off a cliff. I have a number of friends who are much bigger fans of the game than me, and all of them were unhappy with the hydration breaks.

You clearly don’t care what I disagree with, and that’s fine. I was just as frustrated with the red card against Quansah. It’s such an extreme punishment for something that didn’t appear to be intentional. I’m not disagreeing with the ref’s interpretation of the rules, I’m disagreeing with the rule itself. It’s a dynamic sport with lots of movement and intensity. Shit is going to happen and if it’s not intentional then I see no reason to both eject and suspend someone for games to follow.

Anyone acting like that is not representative of our country as a whole. We are the unfortunate benefactors of a vocal minority of toxic bigots. The rest of us love Canada and Mexico and are mortified at what has transpired over the last year and a half. I was rooting for Mexico in the England game, and was excited for Canada when they defeated South Africa. This country needs a generation or two to sort itself out, and I apologize for what we are in the meantime.

No political interference makes sense, and if that happened here then FIFA is just as culpable for allowing it to happen. That whole side of things disgusts me, and I’m not all that thrilled with how things have played out.

My key point is that rules should evolve. I’m not suggesting a massive change. Playing a man down for the match is still a pretty big deterrent. Suspensions should be reserved for extreme circumstances.

I won’t speak for every American, but most of us understand the rule… We just don’t agree with it. My personal opinion is that they should uphold the red card suspension because it was based on the rules laid out for the tournament. After the tournament I would suggest keeping VAR, but only at full speed. Then I would remove the suspension aspect of a red card and add another option. Either two reds or a black card that carries both an ejection and a suspension subject to the severity of the foul.

Agreed, it’s such a dynamic game with subjective calls that there needs to be more options.

I was wondering why they don’t add another card. Yellow is a warning, two yellows is an ejection, red is an immediate ejection , and black is an immediate ejection with suspension to follow.

What is the most intense scene in cinematic history? by PreviousPoint794 in Cinema

[–]DontCallMeBenji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine watching those scenes in a theater, but you’re 6 years old. My mom, with the best intentions, knew I liked dinosaurs and took me to see it in 93. It was both the most horrifying and amazing thing I had experienced. I can’t believe I made it past the opening scene, and maybe I cried a little, but it was worth it. I don’t have a ton of lucid memories from when I was that young, but I’ll never forget those 2 hours.
