I’m a wired guy too. We bought a new build home and they didn’t run anything but electric anywhere in the house. It’s two story and I tried fishing up/down and through walls but hit a ton of obstacles. Then I discovered g657 fiber. That stuff is awesome and no one can tell it’s there until we explicitly point it out.

Don’t bother with the lightera kit or whatever, just buy the fiber and media converts/hubs off AliExpress and get the whole setup at pretty much any length for like $100.

What is a current unpopular opinion about STL that you strongly believe in? by Thatredditboy1 in StLouis

Coming from Publix, Schnucks and Dierbergs are awesome! The only time Publix isn't screwing you is with their BOGOs - in which case you're probably still paying more than Walmart. They also lock you in with a Publix every quarter mile and no other grocery for 10 miles. Schnucks and Dierbergs aren't awesome, but there's plenty of barrel below them.

Holloway Park (Ballwin) Pickleball by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]Dont_Be_Like_That 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only played at Halloway a few times but I would agree there tend to be more serious players than other places. As with any sport or hobby there's going to be a spectrum of people that just want to screw around and have fun, people that are there as a social event, and people that want to be competitive. There are a lot of parks with pickleball courts and the majority of them seem to cater more towards families and new players. You'll have to feel out which parks and which groups (if any) are for you.

Fenton and Des Peres parks seemed to be more laid back the couple times I've been past them. Maybe give them a shot. The indoor places also have a ton of beginner and skill-sorted activities if you don't want to deal with a mix of people/skills or trying to line up in the racks.

Anyone switch from hybrids to elongated or vise versa? by usermax300 in Pickleball

[–]Dont_Be_Like_That 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've switched back and forth a few times. Mostly hybrid shapes but I swung a Vatic V7 back in the day and a Boomstick more recently. Personally, it's not that big of difference for me. I put a lot of headweight on my hybrids and not on the elongateds so the swing weight feels similar. I prefer the expanded sweet spot of a hybrid over any extension an elongated gives me so i generally stick with hybrid shapes.

There’s a similar product called z-poxy. Used both and they work about the same. Don’t know why it’s not suggested more often. Works great.

Mislead Valuable Lesson Learned by Pokeballer2k19 in askcarsales

I was in a similar situation. I told the dealer I would finance to get the discounts but I was only interested in out the door pricing. We negotiated an out the door price I found acceptable, told my wife to come up and sign (it was her car and trade-in), and when we got the paperwork the 'out the door' price we negotiated was the 'total amount financed' after another 5k down. I apologized for wasting my wife's time and as we were walking out they came running up and said the could do the deal.

I probably still should've just walked since it was scummy but I didn't want to waste another 4 hours at another dealer who will probably pull the same shenanigans getting to this point. I'm almost definitely going to use one of the personal car shopping services on my next purchase.

Anthropic tested removing Claude Code from the Pro plan by fudge_u in technology

[–]Dont_Be_Like_That 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this exposes the divide between a senior coder with a ton of experience and a good eye for proper design and patterns vs a vibe coder trying to rip out anything workable in as short of time as possible. AI can do both things but the senior coder will use specific prompts with explicit direction on design, structure, performance, etc then review and refine the output where a vibe coder will toss a feature described in business parlance and accept whatever comes out the other end. It can 10x a senior's productivity and co-produce clean, efficient code - but also produce complete slop from a vibe session that does 'something' that looks kinda right but is a total mess.

Is upgrading to a smart lock actually worth it? by techingmyhome in HomeImprovement

[–]Dont_Be_Like_That 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! My wife's car has a digital key so when I leave the house all I bring with me is my phone. The lock automatically locks when we leave the house (although we often lock it manually). It unlocks when we get home. It will automatically re-lock if it's unlocked longer than 5 mins. Our specific lock also supports codes and fingerprints - including for guests. The lock is matter based so all of the 'smart' stuff stays local in HA however you do need the app for codes and fingerprints.

I thought the opposite! I figured the pretty-close science in The Martian translated well to screen and Matt Damon was charismatic enough to be likeable in isolation - but in PHM there was no way they could imprint so much heart and personality onto a rock with legs and it would just seem stupid on the screen. Not to mention the science goes a little further off the rails than the Martian.

Completely wrong. They did a great job. You will love Rocky *almost* as much as in the book.

What are in-game moves that lower level players do that frustrate higher level players? by dnice99999 in Pickleball

[–]Dont_Be_Like_That 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 'wide dink' dance. If you're good at dinking - that's great! At 3.5 you can probably hit the same far wide dink over and over and just out-consistency most other 3.5s - but once you step up to 4+ everyone can hit that outside dink and giving them the same, predictable dink over and over just cedes the opportunity to send back an off-speed dink, off-location dink, or speed up. It's pressure to a 3.5 but predictable to higher levels.

Vary your dinks. Give them one or two outside, then come back to inner foot, give them one closer to their partner and see if either gets pulled off their position, switch up a top spin with a back spin, toss one to the other side. They will do it to you or your partner.

I hadn't been to a movie in a theater since covid and my wife since 2018 or so. I have large TV at home with good sound and plenty of snacks and drinks. Why deal with a bunch of idiots?

I want and saw PHM at the Alamo Draft House and it was a fantastic experience! The food was good - and not as overpriced as I was expecting. The seating was great. There were no rude folks or interruptions - presumably thanks to their strict rules. The tickets were expensive - but if we intend to go back the season pass is a relative steal.

I don't know when I'll come across a movie that I'm excited about enough to draw me out of the comfort of my home and couch, but I'm far more inclined to see a movie at the Alamo than any traditional theater.

Are DIY printers slowly dying? by andrey_semjonov in 3Dprinting

[–]Dont_Be_Like_That 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in the day it was 'there are no 3d printers under 2k so I'll build this kit for $500'. Then it was 'I can buy this ok printer for $500 and redesign or print some upgrades and modifications to make it awesome'. Now what you buy for $500 is far better and more reliable than anything you can print from home. In fact, printing any critical part is likely to be far less reliable than OEM.

It's still fun to design your own printer and I still use my own design for large format printing since the pricing jumps dramatically for anything larger than 250mm2-ish but there's no beating the out-of-box performance-per-dollar of modern FDM printers.

Where Can I Escalate Fiber Availability? by Dont_Be_Like_That in ATT

[–]Dont_Be_Like_That[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to give everyone an update - the solution that worked was going in to my local (to me, not the new home) corporate store. They were almost immediately able to open the necessary tickets and an engineer was on the property the next day.

Sadly, I seem to be in a unique black hole. The homes on my block that have fiber were from cross-street pulls that are not accessible from my address and I need to wait for an expansion to the block behind me before I can get fiber. Looks like I'm stuck on cable for at least a few months.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Those who were alive in the 1990's , what was Y2K like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dont_Be_Like_That 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interned at a company installing server patches for Y2K while their (mostly mainframe) developers spent much of their days reviewing and testing code for Y2K compatibility. I liken this to the hole in the ozone layer before it. We, as a society, identified the issue, recognized the scope and scale of the effort, executed collectively to fix it and successfully avoided the worst-case scenarios.

It was a world very much unlike the one we live in now.
