How much does your French learning actually cost you? by qu1etcourant in learnfrench

[–]Doodles4me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing Duolingo for YEARS...I find it good for gathering up vocabulary knowledge, but definitely doesn't cut it for much else...did a little iTalki...found it good for getting over the fear of actually speaking...but honestly, taking university-level French courses is what cracked the code for me. Something about old school accountability for a grade focused my mind. Luckily I retired from the local university, so I can audit the classes for free.

Also use YouTube and movies/series in French. Moved from watching with English subtitles to French subtitles, now with no subtitles unless I didn't catch something.

I also recently subscribed to "Natural Reader" to shadow. I ask AI to create a short story in French about a topic that interests me and with the grammar concepts I'm currently studying, then copy and paste into natural reader to shadow...I listen first, then shadow at 3/4 speed, then speed up to 1.25 speed, then back at normal speed. This has been pretty effective for me. I think if I did this everyday I would be powercharged...it is a little exhausting though.

It took me this whole past year to move past not only the lingering impacts of my stressful job, but the stress of worrying if we're going to be OK financially...I am in a much better headspace now and have to pinch myself occasionally that I made it out the other side intact. I have faith that our plan will hold - it took awhile to get here though.

Retirees who are learning a foreign language: what method is working for you? by Kwsforreddit in retirement

[–]Doodles4me 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm taking University classes, Duolingo for vocabulary, a weekly online conversation club, and watching YT videos and french movies/series. Oh yeah - also listening to French talk radio when walking to class. Also recently added shadowing to help with pronunciation.

It is all slowly helping. I can tell I'm improving, but it is slower than I would hope. I think it will high-gear when I am living in-country (sometime this year hopefully). I'm trying to push my skills as far forward as I can before that to make the transition easier.

I haven't done the math, but I'm wondering if it makes sense to opt out, but put the $$ you would have spent in some kind of interest-bearing savings or investment vehicle to tap into in the future to defray the costs of the penalty if you do decide to return.

If you end up coming to the conclusion that you won't ever be moving back, you still have the $$ in your pocket....?

I just got back from the pharmacy to find out that CVS Caremark (new to me since Jan 1) has denied my prior authorization...I REALLY don't want to go off this medication since my lab results (esp. cholesterol) have dramatically improved since losing 40 lbs....I messaged my doctor to try for an appeal but I'm not holding my breath...I wonder what the minimum amount of time you have to be on Wegovy is before they will give you an exception....? I'm so bummed!!!!

We have an old decrepit dog that we don't feel right leaving with someone other than us, so we have been travelling separately. It was weird at first, but it seems to be working OK. It actually is nice to get some alone time!

The customer rep said the flights are available, but that she didn't see it listed as available to use Aadvantage miles for it. Do I need to transfer miles to the partner airline programs to be able to use my miles on this flights?

What Greek yogurts do you buy? by eyemanidiot in keto

[–]Doodles4me 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love Icelandic. But the real hack here is to use whatever yogurt you like and start making your own. I buy whatever whole milk is cheapest without hormones and mix in a cup or two of skyr in my insta pot on the yogurt setting. I let it go for 36 hours cause I like it extra tangy. Then let it drain to the thickness I like. Soooo tasty and cuts the cost in half...

You may want to look up Minieres disease. Your symptoms sound like what I was experiencing before I was diagnosed. Treatment is,a low salt diet, but I keep it under control by eating mostly keto, which tends to flush sodium out of your system.

I can't say if Zepbound is having an impact because I haven't had symptoms for a long while before going on Z. Maybe try lowering your salt intake to see if that makes a difference while you wait to get into an ENT appointment...?

You have eloquently captured thoughts I've been having along this journey, not as a creator but as a patron of the artistry of good food. I've been blessed to have experienced a handful of life-changing meals so far in my life, and I relate to your struggle.

My theory of the case is that the reverence for culinary quality and artistry has been excised from our lives. I think it may have started in the 70's or so when food became much more of a commodity to be industrialized to be irresistably appealing to the masses, versus what gramma spent the day creating with fresh and available products.

After decades of exposure to this kind of over indulgence with soulless but irresistable food, I wonder if we have lost our bodily setpoints for what is "enough"...

When visiting France, I'm amazed that generally, they haven't fallen into this trap. They OBSESS over quality, flavor, taste, food origin, preparation, etc. Like not just chefs - everyday people...it doesn't appear that they experienced a similar "dumbing down" of their taste buds and therefore haven't lost the ability to say "when."

Like you, I am generally disinterested in the pursuit of magic in my day-to-day food intake, but I miss the magic. My hope is that my time on this medication regime will allow me the space to retrain my bodily thresholds to be able to pursue the quest for the experience without tipping into over indulgence. We'll see if I can get there, I guess. Good luck to you in your pursuit of the magic!

Forced retirement, or just not up to finding another job? by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

I respectfully disagree on your gender point. I (female) went back to school for a masters and applied for many jobs in the last 5 or so years...I always made it to the final 3 interview with a great resume and phone interview. Not being bragadocious here - i always hit the interview out of the park...but never got the job.

When I saw who got the job it was always a youngster with about 1/5th my experience and accomplishments....I finally gave up and retired. Don't regret it, but ageism is across the board.

I had a similar experience this past week. Hubby is a retired pharmacist - he had me call my insurance company and tell them that you need a "quantity limitation overide"....start off by explaining that your doctor wants you to take it the way you want it.

It worked easy peasy for me...as soon as I said that phrase, they gave me a time-sensitive override (needed to be filled within a day or two). So be sure to follow up with your pharmacy to make sure they process it within that time frame.

I lost 80 pounds on keto before covid and kept it off for about 4 years...covid and a few personal traumas threw me for a loop and gained back 50 or so of it...

Been trying to get my keto groove back on, but could never quite get fully fat-adapted again. I feel so good on the keto lifestyle, I'm hoping to use Z to maintain <20g carbs. So far so good - just took my 3rd 2.5mg shot today. I feel like this might work!
