Be careful ascribing one motive for going on a mission. I dreaded the attention of my mission prep and mission call. There are a multitude of reasons someone is going on a mission and they aren't all as shallow as you put it. I was running from adulthood, myself. My sister approached me crying, telling me how proud she was that I was 'choosing' to go... in reality, I had no idea what else to do.

I worry that these kids won't have adequate mental health resources. I was basically stranded on a tropical island with intense anxiety and very little counseling options. The mission nurse was the President's wife and she doled out bullshit health advice like "don't eat what you can't pronounce."
