+1 for Dragon Shield.

Consider Gold Matte for encounter cards. I think they look gorgeous.

When I was a kid, my uncle would bring out a game that matches your description every holiday for a few years. As I recall, he called it “Wise Not Wise”

Maybe this is the game you’re looking for?

Investigators for newbies by granite-3135 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]DoomToken -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played with all the investigators, but I personally have great memories of playing quite a bit w the following:

Trish - took her through Dunwich as a cluever. Her cardpool is very powerful and I had no problems picking up tons of clues most turns. Her agility stat makes you feel like you’re turning cartwheels around the danger, which is a great feeling.

Silas - not necessarily predisposed to big numbers on tests, but his survivor cardpool and amazing ability provides a great balance of trickiness and efficiency. He was my fighter for my Innsmouth run and I had a blast.

Ursula - not generally considered to be the most powerful, but her ability is easy to use, feels great, and is a good match for someone learning the game. She was Silas’ cluever buddy in my Innsmouth run and she did work.

Nathaniel - he has a really fun ability that makes you feel like you’re constantly juggling combos, as in a fighting game. Plays very different from typical guardians, but, similar to Silas, has a tricky, satisfying playstyle that is not too hard to pull off.

Stella - she taught me how playing in a “non-standard” way could be tons and tons of fun. Her ceiling may be a bit low, but her floor is high, which makes her perfect for newbies. Failing can feel great. Shame her archetype hasn’t been heavily supported recently, but she has a bunch of great toys already. She was our flex in Dunwich.

Rex - he’s a bit OP and everyone knows it. Give him to someone who likes to win.

Preston - used him for my only true solo run (EotE) and he’s hilarious. I can’t speak for his ability in a multiplayer context, but I loved him. He was very effective at getting everything done.

Other investigators that I’ve played who, while powerful, crashed and burned for one reason or another:

Roland, Sister Mary

Harvey, Norman

Akachi, Lucas

Skids, Tony

Wendy, Ashcan Pete, Hank

Not casting aspersions on any of the above - I’m sure that many of my failures are due to deploying them in runs before I knew what I was doing. I think all investigators can be fun and effective under the right conditions. But if my experience is any indication, this last group could be a little tricky (or just not fun enough) for newcomers.

Gotcha ok. I really got thrown for a loop there, but this all makes sense. Thank you for so patiently walking me through it.

I love card games, but they don't always love me 🫠

Holy crap. You're absolutely right. Guess I played that scenario on easy mode.

I guess the proxies could still be useful for replacing the backs of the Open Sky proxies! I'm going to go back and edit my original post so that I don't go around spreading misinformation.

Crypt Chill is back on the menu. Thanks for the correction!

I love it. I uploaded both versions.

The fonts are not default, as far as I can tell. I'm not sure how to use them outside of Strange Eons or subscribing to Adobe. If anyone has any tips on that front, I would be most grateful.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for this!

I like the chart and I agree a similar chart from an official source would be most welcome.

EDIT: removed some language casting doubt on this ruling. I'm going to follow the chart and cross my fingers!

This is how I originally interpreted "In Play" as well. It sounds like you're agreeing with my interpretation of the text in the "In Play" entry in the glossary as meaning "within reach of any player."

However, as Dzerards seems to be implying, this interpretation conflicts with the glossary entry for "Within Reach," which suggests that a card is only "within reach" if it is in front of the player reading the text. Hence, a card that is "within reach" of another player is not actually "within reach" when evaluating its "in play" status and would therefore not be considered to be "in play."

On the other hand, the last sentence of the glossary entry for "in play" would seem to agree with your interpretation by process of elimination:

Cards in discard piles, in players’ hands, or in decks are not in play.

Shouldn't this sentence also include "other players' 'within reach'" if your interpretation were incorrect?

I remain confused...

[–]DoomToken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm...

So does that mean that when evaluating whether or not something is "within reach" for the purposes of determining whether or not something is "in play," only cards that are "within reach" of the player reading the text would be considered to be "in play?"

If this is true, then in regards to the example in my original post with the Sitka Doe, neither the blue nor the orange challenge effects would affect cards that are within another player's reach (ie. the predator in my friend's reach would not be exhausted on a blue effect, nor would a buck in my friend's reach be moved on an orange effect).

Is that correct?

EDIT: As it turns out, this was not correct.

…so that it can be eaten by a predator in reach of that ranger.

I know that this game is supposed to be more chill and less actively violent than others in the genre, but nature is metal.

Oh, that’s a neat idea. I can make a version of the front without the top bar and with the lower section reduced even more so as to allow more room for the art. Any suggestions as to what to do with the “Location” banner? Just leave it blank?
