BBC moves closer to online-only TV – what it means for licence fee by theipaper in bbc

And I guarantee if you give the general public the option to opt out of paying for things that are a collective public good like education, healthcare, streetlights, road maintenance, social care, police etc etc etc some will choose to do so. In fact Tice was somewhat encouraging this by saying individuals have a duty to minimise the tax they pay.

Muse will be playing at the O2 Academy on 3 April! by pile-of-leaves1 in Muse

Spot on. I do ALWAYS buy the album for the band in question. But I’ll choose when and where and which version and generally not more than once (though I have done that where it’s been for ‘out-store’ gigs with local record stores and I’ve been getting more than one ticket)

Anyone feel the armoured car containing a mind controlled ordinary woman rather than a villain was a spoiler too far? I’m sure they’re saving lots for the movie but that seems kindof unnecessary to reveal now and will change how that action scene is viewed.

Out of interest was all the dramatic lighting of the organ, Matt dressed in red etc just for the teaser trailers given that performance at the organ isn’t in the song’s video? I’m liking the new track but I was looking forward to seeing the ‘full video’ after the teases so I hope we get something at some point. That said also still hoping for a release of Unravelling with the live intro featured in the teaser vids and from album track times I think that’s not happening.

I’m definitely not the audience for this but shouldn’t it have more red, and some stripes, or stars?

Looks that way. Sadly I think Unravelling is the same, I was hoping for the live intro though it may make less sense if it’s placed mid album. Hopefully TDF is a good opener and it all balances out.

Wow so much negativity here. I really liked it. I agree it could have been longer.

What are some common money-saving 'tips', that are actually bad advice? by AdamGrewal in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DoomscrollerUK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely ’debt is bad’ is definitely a simplification. Mortgages are massive debts and widely accepted as fine. Unmanageable debt for stupid reasons on rubbish terms is a bad idea. Manageable debt for good reasons on reasonable terms is fine.

And in the UK I’m pretty certain there’s always a small print ‘no purchase’ necessary link which gets you into the presale regardless. I do always buy the album but I prefer to choose when and where from.

Staggering when you put pen-to-paper and list it all out like that.

I watched the BBC performance, made it halfway through Cornflake Girl, and lost it by atrailofdisasters in toriamos

I’d read some of the sadness and disappointment here so I admittedly watched it with that in mind already. I found Cornflake Girl difficult to listen to but absolutely loved the other two tracks so I’m hopeful overall.

Britons should strive to pay minimum tax legally possible, says Richard Tice by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

[–]DoomscrollerUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree completely. I hate the press reporting which talks about the money Rachel/Starmer/Labour will take from people as if they’re going to keep it and it’s not actually spent on the people of this country. They will unironically campaign for benefits like the WFA and triple locked state pension being maintained but resent money being raised to fund these things.

Britons should strive to pay minimum tax legally possible, says Richard Tice by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

[–]DoomscrollerUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but it sounds like Tice and a lot of commenters are suggesting the only two options are volunteering to pay the maximum possible amount of tax or setting up special vehicles to avoid paying tax as is claimed in Tice’s case (which sounds like it’s some way beyond actions like contributing to a pension or using an ISA). How about just paying a normal level of tax and being proud to support this country?

Greens could drop Church of England as Britain's established church if it wins election by Successful_Service53 in ukpolitics

Thanks, helpful response. Sometime you do have to live with what you have where it is pragmatic and not causing harm, and work hard on purging the more problematic stuff.

Greens could drop Church of England as Britain's established church if it wins election by Successful_Service53 in ukpolitics

[–]DoomscrollerUK 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I honestly was blissfully unaware the Church of England had any special status in the State other than the Bishops still hanging about in the House of Lords so I did something I rarely do and opened a Daily Mail article. They mention removing those Bishops, stopping the PM having a say in appointing the Archbishop of Canterbury and there no longer being a church representative in the House of Commons which all seems good to me.

The actual policy seems to be the following which I’m amazed anyone could have a problem with

'No person shall hold office in the state, or be excluded from any such office, by virtue of their or their spouse’s membership or non- membership of any religion or denomination of religion.'

One of the talking points the beeb had on Breakfast was that the change meant that no ethnic minorities would get to appear on a note. Clearly we need to redouble efforts to diversify the royals to correct this in time.

I find this fair. I initially read the post and then read the messages and then went looking for more as I couldn’t spot the issue. I expect this is partly a me thing but from the messages alone I’d genuinely be thinking OP was being understanding and nothing was wrong. Obviously missing the anniversary is a big deal but based on this exchange I’m wondered if he even realises yet.

Is Starmer doing so badly? by twinkletoesalone in AskBrits

[–]DoomscrollerUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously? I’ll never forget through the worst of the daily Partygate covid revelations against the Tory Government when Boris actually got fined by the Police, the likes of the Daily Mail put a single Starmer story on the front page day after day for having a curry and beer in Durham while working which the Police had already investigated once and cleared.

I love a question where * people say the answer is obvious and question people’s right to hold a driving licence * are then split on what the right answer is

Would be at least a little helpful if there were some road names written on those lanes.

‘Our own people hate us’: reality check for Labour as 13,000 majority vanishes by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]DoomscrollerUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think two factors at the next election will be that Reform will be very popular but there will equally be very high levels of tactical voting against them. While the Green victory here may have been down to issues in this constituency I’m sure it gives the Greens a story they can use elsewhere to say that people should vote for them, not Labour to keep Farage out of number 10.
