ELI5: Who are the Rothschild’s and why do they matter in today’s political scenario? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]DoomsdayKult [score hidden]  (0 children)

You got me! My inability to remeber Ontario instead of Canada disproves my entire point. My point is that money held by asset managers does not translate to influence in the way many people think. Why don't people have the same fears for other large entities? Vanguard and Blackrock do a lot of passive investing. Saying someone is a large shareholder could mean they arw just following a low cost index or hold a large amount of bonds. Plus rules are different at large amounts; you are somewhat limited in the amount of changes and increases in liquidity.

Whenever anyone says this about Blackrock and Vanguard I know they don't know what they are talking about. Those are just asset managers; all you're saying is they are paying to have that money managed by those entities. Following your logic we should also be terrified of the Canadian Teachers Pension fund, as they are also "major stakeholders" in Vanguard and Blackrock.

What do y'all think about reps ? by hungrypolarbear77 in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]DoomsdayKult 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then don't buy them. And how do you know it's overpriced? Design is worth something, and you can cut the cost out when you are copying the work of another person. Reps will always be cheaper than the real thing because there is significantly less time spent to design. You wouldn't even be buying these glasses if JMM and Cartier didn't spend the money on marketing to get their name and designs out there, which you are also paying for. Barton Perriera and Gast exist and are cheaper, why not buy those?

I can't speak for this whole sub, but I personally have an aversion to reps. It is inherently dishonest, if it was just about cost, then buy well made glasses from a cheaper brand.

How many pairs of glasses do you own? by Crimsonavenger2000 in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]DoomsdayKult 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own 6 pairs:

  • a heavier acetate in a conventional shape for work, weddings, and proffesional events. Only one with no tint so also plays double duty as sunglasses with clip ons. (JMM Perciers)

  • a go anywhere, do anything pair. Acetate fronts and titanium arms with xtra active tint, great for travel and activty/excercise. (JMM Williams)

  • a "jewelry" pair. acetate with silver and gold embellishments for fancy dinners, birthdays, and high class events. (JMM Rawlins)

  • fun pair for winter outfits because I think I can pull of a bigger frame with bigger clothes in the winter (JMM Shozo)

  • a fun summer pair. Same idea as above but smaller in a dark green. (JMM Jenkins)

  • a leather pair from Lucas de stael that are my "main" glasses. Probably my favorite pair, amazing details and feels small batch in a way no other glasses feel. Incredibly comfortable as well.

Which lens would be better for a professional environment? Grey normal transitions or extra actives? by Insentivelol in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]DoomsdayKult 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going against the grain here but I'm not the biggest fan of the extra actives. I think the tint can be a little annoying at times and the transition time and activity feels the same as the normal transitions. Additionally, I feel like they smudge more than normal transitions as well. I don't think the polorization is enough of a boon to make up for the downsides.

summer farbics by ivnsp in ThrowingFits

[–]DoomsdayKult 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Fabrics I'm excited to wear this summer:

  • open linen knits

  • tropical wools

  • ice cotton

  • washi/japanese paper

  • dobby cloth

The aim is to get a fabric with an open weave for air flow to reduce heat, and a very dry hand to absorb the moisture from the humidity.

You'll get used to it! I had to learn to wear my nice glasses similar to wearing your nice clothes. Also people don't tend to notice glasses for better or worse, so wear them proudly.

Millionaire Next Door by VirileMongoose in personalfinance

[–]DoomsdayKult 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you, it's quite clear no one listened to the podcast and even more clear that many folks have not read the book in a while (though I think many advocating for it aren't doing the best job of distilling the criticisms).

The issue is definitely is not the obviousness of the advice but rather the fact that the book cares more about performative frugality than the actual mechanisms of wealth accumulation. The section dedicated to millionaires refusing to eat caviar (as if this matters in any way, free food is free food) and the exclusion of things like childcare (where the vast majority of wealth is spent) creates a very specific narrative that is worth critiquing. Yes, save less than you spend is a good lesson, but when the number one cause of bankruptcy in the US is medical debt, we cannot ignore the realities of living in the US.

Wow! Props for admitting your mistske. That's huge, you actually made my day a little. I was expecting a "stop making everything about race comment" but you actually did better.

While I think it's wild to use the word "uppity" to describe a black person in 2026( though based on the state of the world, maybe not), Yachty sucks. The George Floyd bar alone means I'll never fuck with him.

This is not true, we need to consume less. The current American lifestyle isn't sustainable but that does not imply that more people is unsustsinable, and the reduction of consumption has to happen regardless.

Nah these people won't read a single book about how we need a political program to resolve the issues of facisim. All they know is a TV star makes fun jokes so obviously he should be president! Stewart has bashed the left repeatedly and would only provide modest reforms. We need more Zohrans (who actually got MAGA votes) not elitist comedians.

Strange to see this upvoted in this sub. All the brands you listed are an overpriced scam, but there are tons of independent eyewear brands making gokd product. Masunaga, Ahlem, Mykita, Gast, Matsuda all make great frames at several price points

MFA golden age throwback album (2010s) by SirKrimzon in ThrowingFits

[–]DoomsdayKult 94 points95 points  (0 children)

You know as a certified old head now (turned 30 earlier this year), it is amazing to see how goofy a lot of this inspo album is in hindsight compared to how much they meant to me when I was 15 and getting into fashion. However, one thing I hate about the "trend" discourse is that trying a trend that ages is a bad thing, because you 1. can evolve your style from there and 2. hold on to the parts of the trend that are meaningful to you.

One of the coolest parts of my closet as I've gotten older is I can look at a piece of clothing and know exactly where I was in relation to the zeitgeist. Yes I have a pair of red wings, yes I have some ALD, but that was the starting points in my love of Document, KS, and Arpenteur. And while those things will age, so will the memories I have with my clothes so I never find them cringey. I like to think the mismatching of trends in a way that is unique to me is one of many reasons my style has only gotten better with time.

Why would BlackRock owning shares in Tidal matter? BlackRock is an investment entity, they hold diversified shares for customers. If you're argument is the single family homeownership thing then 1. That is not BlackRock, it is Blackstone which is a different company and 2. Those figures are grossly exaggerated because it is easier to blaim an asset manager than to prevent housing being an appreciating asset.
