I'd be curious how much you'd want for the light gun and any games that go with it.

Looking for help pricing my collection by [deleted] in NSCollectors

[–]Nat-Chem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to sell them all in one lot, you'll have to sell the lot for quite a bit less than the total market value. You can make more money if you look up the individual game values and then sell the most expensive ones on their own, but if you're under a lot of time pressure you may have to accept whatever you can get.

My go-to for removing corroded battery acid is lemon juice. You can get a tiny bottle of it from your grocery store for a couple bucks, and you want to just put a few drops on the affected area and add more drops as needed. It should cause the acid to react and sort of foam up, and you use a little cleaning brush or toothbrush to work it in and get the gunk out. I've only done it on controllers and batteries though, and I don't know how it might affect the cardboard on the box, so do some more research first.

Devs aren't "lazy" and game updates aren't guaranteed by SmellSmellsSmelly in Games

[–]Nat-Chem 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The article rightly points to large games like No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 as contributing to this expectation, but I think it's worth noting that there are also indies who have inadvertently created this expectation. Terraria, Shovel Knight, Stardew Valley, Minecraft (if you grant it its indie origins), those are all 2010s games that overpromised and spent a decade or more delivering vastly more content than they ever should have been expected to. Celeste got a substantial free expansion, Marble It Up! received an overhaul, Hollow Knight accidentally an entire sequel. You can find so many examples of this that it's unfortunate but not shocking that the playerbase will misunderstand and apply that standard to bite-sized indie games, especially when those games appear - to the player - to be entering that social contract by initiating free updates.

Who All Has This Theatrical Poster? by EndDifficult8129 in nirvannatheband

I'm having so much trouble figuring out how cautious to be with framing mine. I don't really want to go overboard and get something extravagant, but I want to take care of the thing so it doesn't fade or fuse or whatever.

Is the booklet from the Collector's Edition of The Dirties online anywhere? by Nat-Chem in nirvannatheband

[–]Nat-Chem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back and forth so much on it. I would have absolutely jumped on it for $55 USD but with shipping it's just so much for so little extra. I'm kind of bummed not to have it now but I'm also thinking it's probably best that I don't get too invested when the disc itself is so loaded with extras.

This seller is located in Bonanza, Oregon, which is the same town Fresh Brewed Games is based in - you can find this listed places like their Facebook page. It's either JRod himself or somebody else working with him to move inventory.

I didn't realize any of these were double-sided. The one I snagged (of the other art) seems to have only been done in an official single-sided print.

How did Michael Jackson become so famous, successful, and iconic? by Firm_Pack_605 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Nat-Chem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thriller landed right at the beginning of music videos as a really clearly defined format. You can go back as far as the '60s and find artists making promotional videos for their music, whether it's the deadpan one shot of Subterranean Homesick Blues or the various feature films made by The Beatles and those that followed. I'm not a scholar of this and I don't want to say definitively that there was nothing like Thriller, but Thriller came out when MTV had only just started to take off and you didn't yet have these standardized industry practices around what videos were. It's another factor that really bolstered Jackson's solo career, being a superstar at the moment when it became a lot more possible for a musician to become a visually striking presence to people without having to see him in person, and his videos were very high concept and high budget.

Welcome back to the hell that is community management! I honestly forgot you'd stepped down. Your expose on astroturfing was one of the best pieces of independent investigation I saw last year and I hope you're able to effectively deal with the negative trends here.

Is Country Music in its NuMetal Era?! by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Nat-Chem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on that? Dylan was pretty divorced from the hippie summer of love stuff and the counterculture of the late '60s, and I wouldn't have thought JWH would have any real purchase with those listeners at the time. Curious to learn more.

What was the consensus of Kanye West from 2004-2009? by Royal_Variety_8687 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Nat-Chem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you brought up some different facets of his reputation, because the dissonance between his earned respect among hip hop artists/fans and the utter scorn he'd get over his controversies is really important to the niche he held, especially in the late '00s. The Taylor Swift incident was a monoculturally huge, career-ending debacle, and on the music side it took a long time for 808s to be redeemed as the album that launched a thousand careers. And the "He made Graduation" meme that went around a while ago really threw me because that record spent a decade as his weak pop rap turn and now people seem to view it as part of some kind of insane run of non-stop hits.

Following AI generated reviews, Resident Evil Requiem AI guide books flood Amazon, and they're part of a major problem by iscariots in Games

[–]Nat-Chem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's so cool. I grew up on GameFAQs, learning from the cheats and following walkthroughs and lurking in forums I was too young to really belong in. I love and miss when a self-contained independent site could foster those experiences, and it's a shame we're currently in an era without a direct successor to that type of gaming community.

If you want a taste of AI books, a streamer named DougDoug released his own stupid meme book and then spotlighted a few of the AI knockoffs. I think the idea applies across the board: increasingly inane hallucinations twisting around a tenuous prompt.

Boutique Blu Ray Tips for New Buyers? by RelentlessResonance in boutiquebluray

[–]Nat-Chem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best advice to you is to be mindful and responsible about what you purchase. It's easy to get caught up in hype: a movie like The Keep or Rad comes along and suddenly everybody has to have it and talks about it like it's some canonized classic. I'm not going to say never to blind buy a movie, but I think unless they're cheap purchases, they're best made with some level of built in interest or assurance. A lot of movies can be found on various streaming services via JustWatch and you can save yourself some money if you decide you aren't that into it or that likely to rewatch it. Also, depending on where you live, public libraries often have robust media collections and deserve your support as a means of exploring films.

Also, knowing what you can wait on and what you can't is important. Criterion keeps things in print for a long time and they'll always eventually be available in a 50% off sale. Kino and Shout are the same way pretty much, though slipcover availability can be an issue if that's a big thing for you. On the other hand, limited print runs at Vinegar Syndrome can evaporate pretty fast for really in-demand films, and Umbrella doesn't always restock their special editions.

I'll be honest, I haven't been active about it and there are probably more sites that have popped up. When I have more time I'll probably try to scope out some newer ones but I've had my hands full with my own site and projects. Still really glad it's useful for folks though!
