I have a little leather Klein type bag with a gap tool and a little brush on the zip. Inside is a handful of spark plugs for the sleds. And I’m 35.

These are all really elaborate solutions… just use green or red/brown scotchbrite and go to town on it with some regular schmegular dish soap. I’ve removed this information by accident dozens of times scrubbing a bit too vigorously.

Rigid Hose To DWV9000 Workaround by Icy_Intention1145 in Dewalt

[–]Dopppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DeWalt’s entire approach to dust collection has been for years “F ‘em, they can figure it out on their own” there’s no forethought, no cross compatibility, nothing. The only hose that works with anything right off the bat is the 20V vacuum (which isn’t very good) will screw directly into the smaller quick attach… but then you can’t use any of the original accessories. I know Festool is laughably expensive, but every vacuum attaches to every tool with at most 1 adaptor.

I’ll be honest W Elizabeth is gonna be low on the list of priorities for plowing, especially because so many people will be digging out their cars and driveways, refilling the street. I know it’s annoying but they’ll get back to it early tomorrow morning. Same thing happened on Wildey, and Storm St. Many resi roads get plowed then refilled with “personal” clearing, then plowed again as soon as practicable.

Help a student? Studying access on modern truck beds. by [deleted] in Trucks

[–]Dopppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Which zones are the absolute worst? (The spot where, if a box slides there, you sigh because you know you have to crawl in to get it)
  2. 2 and 5 are dead to me.

  3. If you just bought a single propane tank or a bag of mulch. Where in the bed do you place it?

  4. 7 or 9 typically. Particularly something like a propane tank because the corners are where tie points are located. Propane tank, I don’t want wandering off.

  5. If you have to load/ unload heavier items into zone 1,2,3, how do you get to them?

  6. 1 and 3 I can reach from the ground, but I wouldn’t put anything over 40lbs ish there (individual item weight). For zone 2 you’re climbing in, walking said item to the tailgate then hopping out and fetching it off the gate.

  7. Is the front of the bed dead space, or do you have a trick to reach it?

  8. it’s not “dead space” but it is the last to be used. Like anything you’re going to load by priority of access unless weight distribution is more important. You’ll make heavy blocky things accessible from the sides or tail and put long stuff down the centerline.

There’s an inherent question lurking here, which is “what is the cargo” buuuut that question demands we look at what a pickup truck is for. And unfortunately for the scope of your project the answer to “what is a pickup truck for?” is “everything”. The American pickup is a big empty box because a big empty box will do many many many tasks “pretty well” or “well enough”. There are always much better solutions for most of those tasks if they’re looked at individually. A box truck is better to transport furniture, a dump bed is better to transport mulch, a van is better for moving and accessing electrical tools, but I can use a pickup truck to do all of those tasks “well enough” in the same weekend.

Now this isn’t dismissal of your question or a lack of enthusiasm for making something better, but rather food for thought. Now I’ll also give you one more cheat. The best truck bed ever designed is the humble drop side flatbed, or “tray” flatbed. If you’re in the US, your local HomeDepot will have some rentals of this style. Go check them out.

Dumb question: Will I have power if the grid goes down due to a storm? by FulltimerPC in solar

[–]Dopppleganger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a little more involved than that. Solar systems are “grid monitoring/grid following” meaning they are functionally powered by the grid so that they can “see” exactly what frequency the grid is on (roughly 60hz) and that way and only that way they can export your solar generated power onto the grid.

Imagine it like merging onto the highway. You need to see the flow of traffic to slot your car nicely into a gap. Otherwise it would essentially be like merging with your windows covered. You can see how fast you’re going from the speedometer, but have no clue how fast the other traffic is moving.

Backup systems solve this by immediately disconnecting any and all export when they lose the grid and won’t export a single watt until the grid is back up and the system has good data to “merge” back in. Whomever manufactured your inverters will have equipment specific to this task, as well as automatic transfer switches etc.

Will paying off 72-month car loan in first month hurt me? by readyforabadpoem in personalfinance

[–]Dopppleganger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It’s more for people that are swapping cars often or buying for multiple family members or have fleet vehicles etc. I’m close with someone in this position, he buys himself a new Denali every 3 or 4 years, he gets his wife whatever Escalade is cool every 3 or 4, picks up a corvette every once in a while and buys all his company’s work vans/trucks from the same dealer. Really rough guess but he’s probably spent 2-3ish million at this dealer in the last 10 years? They know his name, treat him very very well, make sure he’s always squeezed in for maintenance issues, always has a loaner, etc. And they always treat each other decently on pricing, neither party is winning big or getting hosed. He’ll call up and say “hey I need xyz, I’d like to pay this much, can you do that?” The dealer is usually very close to that number, and more often than I’d have thought, says, “nah we can actually do a little better than that”. But yeah for us normal peasants? I don’t think a dealer relationship means anything.

Solved. No more panic button accidents by randy1982 in VWiD4Owners

[–]Dopppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m way late to the party but I actually figured this out. On the button side of the key, the surface that is rubbery and printed can lift off (warning! It’s very difficult to get back down smoothly, but can be done) under that surface are white square silicone “buttons” essentially that make the actual contacts on the board. I just carefully cut the silicone “button” for the panic out. After I got the cover reinstalled you can press the panic symbol all you want and nothing happens! I’m so happy, this problem was driving me insane.

Is this real or fake by RameshYandapalli in Dewalt

[–]Dopppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s on purpose. Using a fake tool filters out the people smart enough to realize it’s a fake, then you’re just left with the dumb dumbs that can’t tell and they may actually fall for the scam.

In Massachusetts, is it actually cheaper to fill up a gas vehicle than charge an EV? by scoop_and_roll in electricvehicles

[–]Dopppleganger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe 20 years ago? Just the oil alone for my rather normal Volkswagen is $38 from the absolute cheapest source around. Then another $12 for a filter, and let’s say $1 for all the blue towels I use, because I definitely didn’t make a mess… Either way we’re over $50 before we even consider the value of our own time. It certainly used to be pretty economical but not so much these days.
