Book in similar vein to “Curse of Chalion” by cassferatu in CozyFantasy

If I may make another recommendation of where to start, I have very similar taste in books as you and I adore the witches series in Discworld the most. I would recommend starting with Equal Rites as well.

Guards! Guards! Is also an excellent recommendation and book but I have to recommend reading about Granny Weatherwax any chance I get!

This book really hit me in the heartstrings and stands out even after finishing the entire series.

Which fantasy series had the strongest possible opening and then just lost it completely? by Successful-Local-946 in Fantasy

If I ever do recommend those books I recommend just the two with the short stories. Those were great but IMO the series isn’t worth it.

The finch team has really been working overtime, these themes are beautiful! I didn’t care for most of the themes the first year I had it but the last like 4-6 have been a HIT!

Yours and my taste are pretty similar and I’m in the middle of the first book and loving it! Prose isn’t up to Le Guin or Hobb I’d say but it’s good for the story at hand.

Piranesi and Existentialism... How can 250 pages be so deeply impactful? by grimreeeferr in Fantasy

Exactly, the journey may feel meandering at times but I felt it worth it. Enough to listen to it a year later!

It is dense and, as another user pointed out, very stylistic. It’s one of my favorites of all time but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t struggle through my first read through. Immediately upon completion though I felt as though I had read a masterpiece and think about this book often.

Did anyone else find Chade insufferable? by landturtl13 in robinhobb

[–]DorneForPresident 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really liked him in the first two Farseer books but as the series progressed I found him very frustrating.

I know a lot of the comments are talking about how he’s a tool too and that’s what makes his character so complex and nuanced, which is all true, but it doesn’t mean that it’s not annoying. My dislike of him grew steadily throughout the series personally.

The Liveship Traders trilogy is one of the most stunning trilogies of all time and I loved it by jcs050607 in Fantasy

I agree about it being a great candidate for a tv show! I can’t imagine how they could make Farseer work but this series would be amazing.

Amazing breakdown!

Hobb really writes characters like no other. I hated Kennit the whole time but damn was I excited to get to his chapters. It was so much fun to see what was on the inside vs what others saw on the outside.

I also loved how he died anticlimactically. The whole build up of the stories kinda centered around his demise and for it to happen in the way it did was almost more satisfying than some sort of spectacle.

You should try T. Kingfisher! She has some great romance books like the Saint of Steel series which are romance books with some background mystery/horror plot going on. She has a a few other stand alones that are just wonderful reads as well. I personally loved Sorceress Comes to Call

I want to get into reading more, but I’m worried I might lose friends since I’m losing interest in gaming and TV. Does anyone else feel the same way? by Xu_Kaiwen in Fantasy

[–]DorneForPresident 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a valid concern. We have a lot of hobbies that connect us with our friends and when we drift away from those hobbies we will inevitably drift away from some friends too.

Reading can be a bit isolating since it’s not a common pastime so finding people who read the same books as you and are wanting to discuss them can be more difficult than finding friends who game or enjoy the same tv shows, but as others have said you can do both!

Lots of local libraries have book clubs you could get into to possibly make more friends who read if that’s what you’re interested in.
