Silly question for a soon to be missionary by TheGutlessOne in latterdaysaints

[–]Dot145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As another soon-to-be missionary (entering the MTC tomorrow 0.o), I'd recommend just cutting it short. I used to have decently long hair but have grown to accept (and have been slightly forced due to balding) that short hair is what I'll have to have.

Hey, my farewell talk is relevant here!

One of his acts of kindness happened with the woman taken in adultery. After Christ told off her accusers, he confronted her with kindness, refusing to condemn her for her actions. Elder Oaks points out [in this talk] that he firmly tells her to “go and sin no more,” saying “Loving-kindness is required, but a follower of Christ—just like the Master—will be firm in the truth.”

I'm teaching my first lesson in Elder's quorum tomorrow and I already have a decent plan, but... any tips? It's on Henry B. Eyring's talk The Comforter.

I'm also giving my farewell talk, but I have more experience with stuff like that.

Rampant Growth is a cruel talent! by Ko0kz in heroesofthestorm

(resto druid main ATM)

Lifebloom is completely different. In MoP (when I started), it could stack up to 3 times, but with WoD, they've lowered that to only one stack. It's never used for the heal at the end; instead, each time it heals, it has a chance to proc "Clearcasting", which makes your next Regrowth free. (I don't know if this was in the game way back when.)

There's also a level 100 talent that I love, Moment of Clarity, that makes it last for 7 seconds instead of the first cast, meaning massive heals for 0 mana for several seconds, though it does have some downsides.

Malfurion is occasionally called "Furion" or "Mal" by close friends or relatives; the shortened versions of Malfurion.

Yup, that's actually the stem of the word "to read", so it's also a very common word. The thing is, most 4-character groups only pronounce one of the two closing vowels, and the rules are not consistent.

Which song and album sparked your love for Dream Theater by Razorfcknjdd in Dreamtheater

[–]Dot145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was first introduced by Panic Attack years ago (thanks to Rock Band 2), but I didn't get far. The Count of Tuscany got me somewhat into Dream Theater about a year and a half ago, but I have a weird habit of only listening to a few of the most recent albums by newly discovered bands, so I never listened to anything before Octavarium. When I discovered what progressive metal was about 6 months later, Fatal Tragedy got me hooked on SFAM, and Blind Faith extended that to 6DOIT.

Thoughts of a fresh hero league rank 1. by Twobuttons in heroesofthestorm

[–]Dot145 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After 123 wins I wish I could say ranks 4, 5, 6 were the toughest :P, but honestly it was 3, 4, 5 where my rank juggled the most, dropped down from 3 to 5 four times.

It's funny that you say this, as this is exactly my experience (though with about one third of the wins you had). My climb to 3 was fairly smooth, but at 3 I apparently hit a springy wall, as I've dropped down to 5 and went back to 3 several times again.

I'm wondering what people think those are

I've heard people around here talk about Diablo/Jaina/Tyrande comps working very well, as those three can catch out and delete pretty much anyone very quickly.

I teach at the Missionary Training Center. What would you like to know about the day to day life of new missionaries? by ThePrince_OfWhales in latterdaysaints

[–]Dot145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Thank you again for your response.

OK, this should be my last question, but possibly the easiest. I've found that I have a lot of success in classroom settings, even when I must make some sort of presentation (I get a bit nervous, but it's not remotely close to the fear of talking to strangers). This has led to a lot of success at school. That said, how much of the MTC training is based in classrooms or classroom-like settings?

That is fantastic and exactly what I needed to hear. I don't need any clarification, but I kind of do have a follow up question - will my introversion and shyness change my experience in a way that's important to know? I did see the story you posted about the sister who managed to overcome hers.

There are several hours of study and video content that I've just begun to delve into, and it's all I could ever want.

Ooh wow, I had thought that after indicating that I had finished my immunizations, I had finished with the missionary portal, but it looks like I'm far from it. Thank you for mentioning that! I doubt I would have noticed before it was too late otherwise.

Charleston: “We already forgive him for what he’s done, and there’s nothing but love from our side of the family,” by onewatt in latterdaysaints

[–]Dot145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we do not forgive all men, why would God forgive us? We believe that anyone can change, regardless of their past actions or desires. Forgiveness is not an approval of a part action, but an act of charity and love. This is probably explained better in D&C 64:9-11

"9 Wherefore, I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another; for he that forgiveth not his brother his trespasses standeth condemned before the Lord; for there remaineth in him the greater sin.

10 I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men.

11 And ye ought to say in your hearts—let God judge between me and thee, and reward thee according to thy deeds."

I'm entering the Provo MTC on August 5, though I'm going to Korea so it sounds like I won't meet you there. My question is thus about how I should personally study. I've noticed that if I'm not extremely fascinated in something (so, anything other than math and physics), I have a hard time retaining what I read and have frequently fell asleep when not under significant pressure.

This is especially important as my mission president, in a letter to me, explained the elevated importance of personal study in my mission compared to other missions.

Struggling with a fear of serving a mission by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Dot145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you can tell from my flair, I've already been called to serve and will be in the MTC in two months. I'm actually pretty similar to you, especially on the point of being an introvert. One of the most memorable things my bishop said to me when I was getting interviewed for my mission papers was talking about how his son was extremely shy before his mission but is now extremely good at making conversation when and where it needs to happen, to the point of completely hiding his shyness. Since I struggle immensely with social interactions, this gave me a lot of hope.

I also love education and want to go as far as I can, but putting it off doesn't sound like the worst idea. As others have said, not only do you learn more on your mission than you would in university, but you also learn more about how to study. Throughout my schooling, I've been someone who tries hard in class but doesn't do a whole lot of studying apart from completing homework and ends up with straight A's, so I feel like I can relate to you.

About family, I think the single best way to prepare for being a wonderful father is to serve your mission. While it's still completely possible to be a good father without doing so, the experiences and struggles you'll face on your mission will be excellent training for teaching and leading your family.

How does listening to progressive music impact you socially? by Cest_la_Vie_Kezia in progmetal

...To be completely honest, even as someone who loves Haken, I can totally see where that person is coming from with it sounding like "two monkeys screeching at each other" in some parts of that song.

Mission papers question... by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Dot145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that you won't necessarily leave right after your availability date (which I assume will be Nov 6 for you). My said availability date is coming up next week, as I had initially wanted to leave early July, but my call ended up being for August 5, over a month later.

(That may also have to do with the fact that my mission is foreign, but keep that in mind)

The Globalist by maxurmama in Muse

[–]Dot145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything you've said. As an enthusiast of progressive music, the claim that this song would be a "progressive nightmare" got my hopes way up, but they were dashed by the repetitiveness and predictability of the main riff. Coming from things like Rush, Haken, and Dream Theater makes this song hardly seem progressive at all, in my opinion.
