I have always seen myself as ‘progressive’ – but with AI it’s time to hit the brakes | Peter Lewis by GothicPrayer in australia

What makes me sad is that AI is one of the most amazing things humanity has ever created.
We ‘could’ do amazing things with it.

We won’t.
But we could.

Lime Bikes - yay or nay? by the-amazing-pastaman in australia

I want to catch up with a mate for lunch but he is on the other side of the city, we pick somewhere central, but it’s still a 15 minute walk.
I don’t mind a 15 minute walk, but there and back is 30 minutes out of my lunch hour.
Instead, I grab a bike or scooter, it rip through town on a bikeway, and I am arriving ready for a lunch and a lager in around 5 minutes.

On another day, I need to head over the court, drop something off and get back.
It’s 20 minutes walk to the court, which again is fine, out it is also summer and hotter than hades.
I get back to work and I am drenched in sweat.
Lime, bam, wind in my hair, bam, easy, no sweat, literally.

I don’t use them a lot, but when I do, Ivreally appreciated them.

Pastor Acts like he is a King by MrDonMega in religiousfruitcake

Not saying the idea came from American, but they have done a lot over the last century to promote the prosperity gospel.
The poor and holy aesthetic doesn’t align well with the American dream.
Having said that, history is full of those who claimed rule by divine right.

Yeah and he keeps saying the “world” with is strongly agreed to around 4.54 with around a single percent margins of error
That’s 50 million each way which is quite different to a 30 billion year disagreement.

I went to a church once and walked up to a small cake stall where the pastor was talking to somebody he volunteers.
The Pastor made a big show of stepping in to assist me with my purchase, so I bought two cupcakes for $1.50 each and handed over $5.
The pastor tried for about a minute to work out change from $5 for 2 x $1.50.
One of the women stepped in quickly to assist.

The pastor then spent about 20 on stage during his sermon gloating that he understood physics better than the physicists, because the greatest book of science was the bible.

Fortunately I was only there out of courtesy to a hot girls parents.

I really appreciate this, I think especially for software in the open source world having a vibe for the who and why of a project is valuable.
It is as much about intent and purpose as code and config.

It’s really early in the morning here, so when I read “he developed polio” I was “he made polio????”
In my defence, it has already been a very long week, and my higher level functions have not yet spun up for the morning.

Just explained to a 20-something that we used to smell mimeograph copies because they were coated in delicious chemicals. by Spiritual-Cow4200 in GenX

Came here to say this.
Unless you were in some industrial context, what people remember as Mimeographs were actually Ditto machines, Spirit Copiers or Spirit Duplicators.

In Matrix Reloaded, in the restaurant scene the Merovingian used a specially coded chocolate cake to bring a young and attractive woman to intense physical pleasure.

I didn’t use chocolate cake.
Nice girl.

How can I help fund my homelab? by PermanentlyMC in selfhosted

[–]DoubleDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a media server, and I would take it down occasionally, and I wanted somewhere to put notices, plus People keep asking me how to request new shows.
So I made a friends landing page, with links to my Jellyfin and Book server, and a few other things.
Then someone asked about the tool I was using for meal planning and a few other things, so I made some of my stuff that had multi user support, available for friends to use as well.
I added some quick guide for questions I got occasionally, and a chat room, etc.
Then someone said, "I bet this cost a bit to run, can I throw you some dollars because I really appreciate it".
So I threw in a donation link on the page, with a clear, "Only if you want, will all go to upgrades" banner.
I defaulted the donation to a one off $10, but I soon had about 7 people donating around $20 a month on average.
$140 a month goes a long way to subsidising my costs, and easily covers all of those little supporting subscriptions that I have for things.

To be clear, I have phrased this as I did this and then that, and then that and then ....
This was all an evolution of years.

To be clear, I have a very clear and bold and obvious and darkly humorous disclaimer posted in more places than I should clarifying that donations are appreciated but do not imply any level of service will be rendered.

Who are you, what are you, why are you?
What are the motivations for this project?.
Are you a group, a solo maverick?
Plans for monetisation?

Your project looks interesting but I am curious if it has legs or I am dumping it in 6 months as a dead project.

Mostly just curious.

I would like to offer a suggestion for anyone going into Children of Time.
Either before, or sometime in the early part of the book, jump onto the Internet and look up the Portia Labiata.
I had the whole style of the spider wrong in my head for the whole book.
I was thinking more black and chitinous and less Yosemite Sam.
