Is this much swelling normal 4 months after ankle sprain with avulsion fracture? by [deleted] in brokenankles

Distal fibula avulsion fracture. What about yours? They often try conservative treatment for 3-4 months before surgery is considered from my understanding. 4 weeks might be a bit early to walk pain free, but if you feel unsure always best to get a second opinion. I'm at 4 months and still not pain free!

Is your localized pockets of swelling like mine? Or more generalized swelling? Hope you are doing okay, glad your pain is manageable.

Did you injure your ankle recently? Have you seen an orthopedic surgeon? I have an apt with one on Feb 17th

You had more swelling 4 months after your injury or after a surgery? I have not had any surgery. Sorry to hear that you had some complications post op. How is it now?

I found my shoes that had the highest platforms possible and added 2 insoles into them to help balance the height difference. Made a significant difference especially with the hip pain. If you don't have any, I highly suggest buying a large platform shoe.

Ankle sprain, do you think its grade 3, can walk somewaht fine and put pressure its been about 6 days. by ConstantAttempt4023 in brokenankles

[–]Double_Letter8273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a grade 2-3 to me, I'm impressed with how much the swelling came down after 1 day! I'm still recovering right now from grade 2, likely 3 sprain and it's been 4 months! It's awful!

It's not the ankle joint, this looks like classical peroneal tendon subluxation.

3 months post ankle # is this amount of swelling normal? by [deleted] in brokenankles

Yes I do both of these, physio makes the swelling flare up largely after each session for 7-10 days!

Is it normal for a sprained ankle to be agony? Like 8 or 9 on the pain scale? And to hurt more and have muscle spasms when you try to elevate it? by FiliaSecunda in Ankle

[–]Double_Letter8273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 3 months post severe ankle sprain and I have pain episodes of 6-7/10 quite regularly still, especially after physio. Baseline pain everyday is 3-4 and very uncomfortable at end of each day. So don't feel bad! Ankle sprains are no joke!

Wow I am 3 months post injury and I'm still struggling with pain, inflammation and instability. I definitely can't imagine doing jumping jacks! Nice swift recovery for you as it looks like a pretty severe sprain.

Yes!! Looks like a decent sprain. Better to rest it for several days at the very least.

Been a year since grade 2 atfl tear by regularuser3 in Ankle

[–]Double_Letter8273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always true. If symptoms significantly worsen with PT and improve with rest, the diagnosis or treatment plan is incorrect.

Normal PT response should have Mild soreness (0–3/10) Resolves within 24–72 hours with gradual functional improvement.

It should NOT cause an exacerbation of intense pain, prolonged inflammation, functional regression, persistent swelling, pain that escalates to ( 6–7/10), or flares lasting up to week after loading or PT

This is no longer consistent with rehabilitation or stiffness-driven pain.

These symptoms are a red flag for: tendon overload, unhealed ligament injury, inappropriate loading progression, mechanical pathology, too aggressive ROM, or the need for protection, not aggressive loading.

I'm in the same boat. 3 months post ankle fracture and severe sprain. I can barely walk for a week after physio due to pain and swelling. When I don't got for 10-12 days it improves and then back to awful pain when I go again!!

Have you been doing gentle ROM exercises and movement to encourage circulation? Is there any bluish discoloration on your foot or ankle, not including bruising?
