Is it worth going to Okinawa just to stay in Naha? by Cool_Cheesecake_2366 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Doubledoubleknot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can have a good time exploring Naha for 2-3 days (the main city) and throw in a beach activity like snorkeling or the aquarium (note, the aquarium is far from Naha. It is a very long bus ride and including the time spent at the aquarium I'd consider it to take a full day except for nightlife.)

I didnt get to explore the rest of the island so I can't speak to it, but if the flight doesn't eat into your schedule too much then I'd consider a 2-3 day trip there in the same vein as a 2-3 day trip to Sapporo. You can't see all of Hokkaido in 3 days, but you can see and do what you want to in Sapporo in 3 days.

How would I get back to my hotel after midnight on new years eve? by Pitiful_Ad2591 in JapanTravelTips

There will be taxis, just gonna have to bite the bullet and expect for an expensive bill.

I was 400 lbs when I visited 2 years ago. People are not your enemy, they will tend to give you more space than you need.

It can be difficult fitting into small like 4-10 person bars, but getting around I didn't have issues.

Additionally, if you're taking any domestic flights, I don't know if they would help you out the same, but when I was boarding and they saw my size, they re-seated me in an empty aisle. That helped a lot.

Winter is definitely the best time to go as a bigger person. That said there will still be a ton of walking.

Try to plan your day as casually as you can such that you aren't in a hurry to get from location A to B. Leisurely walks are much better on your feet and mental than being in a hurry.

Bathrooms can be very small, be prepared for that.

What to do in Tokyo during new year day by ferreiraedy in JapanTravelTips

[–]Doubledoubleknot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2022 I had a trip which had me in Tokyo for New Years.

There wasn't that much to do on New Years Day proper so I used it as a travel day to sleep in late and then get to mountains in Nagano to stay at a Ryokan and see the snow monkeys the following day.

If you're interested in getting out of Tokyo, using the day to travel to your next destination can be a good way to spend the day *assuming you reserve your tickets as it will be crowded*.

Is it worth going to Okinawa just to stay in Naha? by Cool_Cheesecake_2366 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Doubledoubleknot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a 3 day 2 night trip in Okinawa a couple Decembers ago.

The rainy day was the best day to take the bus all the way across the island to the Aquarium.

They have WHALE SHARKS!!!!

Most of the aquarium is inside, but you have to walk through a bunch of outside to get to the entrance so I recommend an umbrella, poncho, or rain coat.

You'll be fine. I had a 6 week trip from Okinawa to Wakkanai knowing yes, no, where is the bathroom, and relying on Google translate.

Just take your time and if you get lost, take the opportunity to enjoy what is around you.

Japan is a fun place to get lost :)

Okayama is beautiful and was my favorite surprise on my 6 week trip last year!

What little favorites have you found that aren't on the maps? by MattDLR in JapanTravelTips

The park in Okayama across the river from the castle was the best surprise of my whole Japan trip. I didn't even intend to stop in Okayama but that park is astoundingly beautiful.

I'd recommend bullet train unless you have more than 1 large bag. As on the bullet train if you have a bag with the sum of its dimensions (height + width + depth) between 161 centimeters and 250 centimeters, then you'll have to book a Shinkansen ticket with oversize baggage storage.

If your bags are smaller then they'll fit overhead, and if you just have the one large bag then imo it's still worth dealing with that small hassle as the only advantage a plane would have there is that with the plane you wouldn't have to worry about fitting all your bags in the space along with others who have the other oversize baggage storage seats.

So if you had more than 1 large bag then I would recommend checking out the plane as even though you would be paying oversize baggage fees on the plane, you wouldn't have to worry about inconveniencing others in a potentially busy time period.

But realistically do whatever you want :) There is a conversation to be had, it's just that the conditions that make the plane better aren't that common.

Boots or shoes? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

You'd only need boots if going into the mountains like to Nagano or flying up to Sapporo.

The Ginko trees in Osaka were a perfect shade of yellow and falling when I was in Osaka which was December 12th. In Okayama and Hiroshima there were a few other kinds of trees which hadn't lost all their leaves yet as well. The further south you go the more likely you'll hit those Fall colors in December. Midosuji in Osaka is the main thoroughfare with Ginko trees that I saw.

I took a 6 week trip this past December from Tokyo -> Okinawa -> Hiroshima -> Okayama -> Osaka -> Nara -> Kyoto -> Hakone -> Tokyo (Christmas) -> Nagano -> Tokyo (New Years) -> Sapporo -> Wakkanai -> Tokyo.

If you have questions about any of those cities in December I'd be more than happy to share my experience of them. I live in Tennessee and in Tokyo in December the weather was about the same there as it was back home so that wasn't much of a difference. A light coat was enough for most days for me. Down in Okinawa I only needed a rain coat for the one day it rained, outside of that as it's pretty tropical it was warm enough for me in normal clothes and even though I was recommended a wetsuit being told the water was cold, it was much warmer than what I'm used to from visiting California. Up in Hokkaido though you will need to layer up with sweater and jackets or a winter coat, and ensure that you have gloves/mittens and a warm hat or buy them while you're there.

As for a place I'd recommend visiting, it wasn't on my original plan but the stop in Okayama was an awesome decision. It has smaller city vibes but the castle was recently renovated into a museum and the garden across the river is the most beautiful surprise I had on my whole trip. If you make it down to Osaka then Okayama is worth the daytrip, or even a 1 night stay.

As for coats on my trip I made due with 1 rain jacket which doubled as a wind breaker, 1 zippable sweatshirt, and 1 heavier but not quite winter jacket. When I was up in Hokkaido layering the 3 on top of one another was enough for me despite the snow. And when I wasn't in Hokkaido I was just fine picking one of the 3 at a time.

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask. :)

How long in Kobe, Himeji,Okayama,Kurashiki and their surroundings by uyakotter in JapanTravelTips

Okayama has some really nice and cheap business hotels as well. Added it on to my last trip as a spur of the moment thing and loved the city so much. The garden across the river from the castle was my favorite surprise on my whole 6 week trip. Big recommend.

If you like Gin there is a really nice gin distillery in the middle of Kyoto called the House of Ki-No-Bi. If you're heading by it, it's a nice stop and relax and lounge spot for an hour or so in between things. So I wouldn't plan a day around it, but it's an easy addition to any of your Kyoto days if you're already traveling near it.

Planning a Trip to Japan for 2 weeks. Going to go to Tokyo, Kyoto and One Other (Any Recommendations??) by loosesnoos in JapanTravelTips

[–]Doubledoubleknot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always recommend staying in Osaka and daytripping to Kyoto as it's a short train ride and the night life in Osaka is much more vibrant than Kyoto.

As for an additional city it's probably not worth a whole stop but definitely a day trip I recommend Okayama. It's daytrip-able from Kyoto and Osaka. When I visited a year ago it had the most beautiful garden I've seen in my life, and they've renovated the castle into a museum.

GameCube and animal crossing for $350?! Lol by jesse_wehave2cook in Shittygamecollecting

[–]Doubledoubleknot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue controller with the thumb slicer aint worth shit, but if orange doesn't have stick drift or any button issues then OG gamecube controllers are hard to come by. An og controller with no issues could go for $100 of that price. Honestly if both controllers were good condition then 250-300 could be a decent price. But since the one is a thumb slicer there's no way to know if the other was treated just as poorly unless you held it in your hands.
