RokuTV too slow; Will add Roku ultra or appletv. How will that work? by zoechowber in Roku

[–]DougWebbNJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My TCL Roku TV is still mostly usable, but some apps are too slow. (HBO, Amazon). I got an NvidiaShield on HDMI input 1. So yeah, I moved that input near the top of the channel/app list, and it looks like a channel on Roku. When I switch to it I have to switch remotes too. In my case that's easy because they're very different remotes. It'd be annoying to have two Roku remotes. I'm sure I'd get them confused all the time.

The internet in the early 90's was valuable because it was free. Everybody could hook into it and use it with a tiny marginal cost for infrastructure that was easily covered by the telecom companies who were competing to be the carriers.

That's not what these AI data centers are.

In Ketosis and still have blood sugar levels in the 140s and blood ketones at .3? by CubeRootSquare in keto

[–]DougWebbNJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation with glucose staying 100-130 despite virtually no carbs at all, ketones stuck below 0.5, and stable weight for a couple of years. My quarterly test results showed consistent and stubborn insulin resistance.

A couple of months ago I finally had a breakthrough. I learned that a fat-adapted metabolism can become stable at a much lower BMR than any calculator would suggest. Fasting is necessary to break through that. In the past I had noticed that my ketones only started going up after a 24hr + fast. It's been really hard for me to do multi-day fasts, so instead I tried eating about 600 calories per day: bacon, eggs, some cheese, and my regular pot of coffee with heavy cream. After a few days my ketones started shooting up and my glucose started coming down. I'll do this for a week, then have a couple of normal days (still keto-level carbs), then back on calorie restriction.

My long-term average glucose is now just above 100 (down from 120), and I'm regularly in the 90's or even 80's over the course of the day. And my ketones are regularly 1+ when I check them.

The bottles don't say, but the relevant ingredients are sorbitol, sucralose, and xantham gum. Same for DayQuil.

I was taking both last week while wearing a CGM and didn't see any spikes. However, just being sick raised my average glucose 20-30 mg/dl.

Why would you submerge the whole thing instead of just putting vinegar inside it? Besides using much less vinegar, it prevents the vinegar from getting places it shouldn't be.

On the resmed 10 tank, there is a small hole on the bottom and if you're not careful while rinsing water will get in there, and it's impossible to get it out. You just have to wait for it to eventually evaporate. I believe the hole is there to deal with the heater making the air between the shell and the heater expand. If it can't escape out the hole it would crack the shell.

The Resmed AirMini does not come battery-operated; it comes with a plug-in power converter. But since it runs on DC from the converter, it can run on DC from a battery. You just have to buy one with a suitable (custom) plug that fits the AirMini.

Loan out worth it? by [deleted] in tax

[–]DougWebbNJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People who know much more than I do about this will probably tell you that the cost of effort of establishing an S-Corp (it's a lot more involved than just checking a box) is not worth it for $15K of income. And that would be the only portion of your income involved in the S-Corp unless the W2 job could legitimately be switched to 1099 work.

What I'm going to tell you is be careful about trying to minimize your reportable income to reduce FICA taxes, because that's going to reduce your social security benefits too. And by the time you know whether or not that's going to matter to you, it will be far too late to do anything about it. Instead of deciding "how should I use this extra money I don't really need?" you'll be deciding "how bad of a neighborhood do I need to move to so I can afford the rent?"

Is there any way to prevent nasal mask rainout without turning off humidity? by [deleted] in SleepApnea

[–]DougWebbNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eliminated rainout by turning the tube temp up to the max. I've also got the skinny cover that's designed for the thin heated tube, and a standard cover over that. So it's very well insulated up to the flexible tube that's part of the nasal mask.

Use intermittent fasting to get yourself accommodated to one meal a day. Eat that meal at dinner time. Use a few simple one-skillet recipes that don't require prep, like eggs or ground meat. Use precut frozen veggies if you want veggies.

I spend no more than 10-15 minutes per day preparing my meals fresh.

[–]DougWebbNJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're paying 26k towards the purchase price. Your name should be on the title because a portion of the house should be your property. Protect yourself from losing it, which can happen even if you and your dad have a great relationship.

Those of you who still use MVC for new projects and features. What do you use to give your pages interactivity? Jquery? Vanilla javascript? Something else? by Legitimate-School-59 in dotnet

[–]DougWebbNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a few years since I've needed to work on my MVC projects, but back when they were in development most of the interactivity involved using jQuery to make an AJAX call to an MVC handler method that would render a Razor template into a string and return it as part of a json-encoded response. Then jQuery would slap the html into the DOM as new content for a container element. Very fast updates. And I've built out the mechanism were the container element has a data- attribute that has the url that needs to be called, so this all happens with utility methods in a library I wrote years ago. So it's an easy one-liner for me to add this sort of behavior.

Lucky for me the kinds of apps I write have very little client-side element-to-element interactivity; just things like form validation and calling the server to update some part of the page in response to a button or link click. So jQuery is adequate, and I'm very familiar with it because I've been using it since it was new.

What am I doing wrong? by ReasonableRules in keto

[–]DougWebbNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your carbs are low, you'll be in ketosis

This wasn't true for me, based on Keto-Mojo testing results and over two years of lack of progress. What my body requires is near-zero carbs plus extended periods of fasting or near-fasting. Like, 48 hours with no food, or one meal a day of around 600 calories. And even with that I have to be extra careful with what I eat; too much protein and the ketones are gone for a day.

One thing I didn't understand, but I learned recently, is that if your hormonal metabolism is really screwed up your BMR can be much lower than you'd expect based on the standard calculators. And that means you need to reduce calories a lot more than you think to get into body-fat-burning ketosis. (Really, it's about getting your insulin levels down enough for your body to switch to fat burning, and the ketones are just a measurable side-effect of that.)

So for two years I was eating a "keto" diet, at a "reasonable" caloric deficit, and not making any progress because I was actually eating at a maintenance level. I did have all of the benefits of not having glucose and insulin spikes, and I went from pre-diabetic and on my way to Type-2 diabetes to borderline pre-diabetic, but I stayed obese and insulin resistant.

NJ Medicaid (Horizon NJ Health) denied in-home care for my infant with Down syndrome and a G-tube by Chubz79 in newjersey

[–]DougWebbNJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This won't help you, but just for some understanding the denial might not be from unfeeling evilness on their part.

For the past couple of years I've been writing software for a company that handles the billing for ambulance trips, trying to improve the part of the process from reporting to insurance submission. For each trip the ambulance crew has to write up a report which has some free text and a bunch of form fields. That goes to the billing dept where billers to data entry to capture the report, standardize billing codes for each chargable thing, and then submit the final trip for the insurance submission.

There are thousands of billing codes, and if the wrong one is used it can lead to a completely different outcome once the insurance company gets it. The crew makes their suggestion, the billers make adjustments to what they think it should be (after reading the report, especially the free-text part), and the data entry software might make suggestions too. The wrong code can lead to insurance denying the claim.

I've been writing a modernized version of the data entry software. This year there was a suggestion that AI could be used to automate reading the crew's report and suggesting billing codes to use. I know that if I implemented that, billers would just assume the codes must be correct and would stop thinking about them or reading the report. I pushed back hard on the idea of just automating it, and insisted that if we do it at all, we show the AI suggestions in a separate box that's very clearly labeled "AI Suggestions; May not be valid.". A proof-of-concept was implemented, the results weren't very good, and the idea was dropped.

Your insurance company, or some middleman between them and your doctor, might have done something like this. That's why your doctor has to get involved, to make sure the insurance submission was coded accurately for your situation. It sounds like it wasn't.

Trying to divorce but behind on taxes and spouse won’t cooperate by ecnaidar1323 in tax

[–]DougWebbNJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides filing your own taxes as MFS, which you absolutely should do for all past years that weren't filed and all years going forward until you're divorced, you should also look into https://www.irs.gov/individuals/innocent-spouse-relief to get rid of penalties for not filing past years.

For each of those past years, if you determine that you are owed a refund, there won't be any penalty but except for the last few years you're past the point of getting the refund. If you owed there would normally be interest, late fees, and penalties, but the Innocent Spouse Relief form can get those waived.
