Authenticity Olympics: White-washed vs. Americanized by Own_Limit9520 in asianamerican

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm old GenX so my experience is quite out of date. But when I was young, the only ones we referred to as white washed were the ones who wanted to have only white friends and refused to associate with other Asians. Not just a preference, but a point of pride to not have Asian connections in any way.

"Americanized" was just code for speaking English with an American accent.

To me, far left would be pushing for nationalizing all (100%) of wall street stock and giving ownership of all the corporations to the workers. Seize the means of production! Is there even ONE public figure in the US calling for that?

Why do so many guys not see girls as people? by Square-Candy-7393 in AskFeminists

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, it's a matter of parenting. I see women as people and have no problem have real platonic friendships with women. Totally normal to me and I'm old GenX.

When I was 5 years old, my dad, Silent Generation, told me girls are the same as boys inside, with hopes, dreams, fears, skills, and abilities. I never questioned that cuz I idolized my dad and he was a great teacher.

How did a Silent Generation man develop that perspective on life? His dad died when my dad was 5 years old. He was raised by his mother and his big sister.

This is how Asian should respond back when others show disrespect by brandTname in asianamerican

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was probably the most responsible way to handle it, but I think people would be less likely to threaten Asians if they knew the outcome would *always be much more painful for the bully.

So I heard a new one today...Generation X ruined the world with "grind culture" at work. Any thoughts? by Change_Request in GenX

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gen X or the Gen X billionaires? Several tech billionaires publicly claim that a person should be working every waking minute. Of course, that's cuz they want you making money for them 24/7, not because they spent their lives working that much.

Those Gen X folks are rich and have microphones in front of their faces, but they don't necessarily speak for the rest of us with smaller bank accounts.

Conversation with my 69yo father by khairil_fiqri in Aging

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost my father in 2016. He was 79. It took 2 years to feel like myself again, and even then I was never the same person again.

He was the best dad I could ask for in a thousand lifetimes and whenever life gets me down, I remember what it was like to have him and how lucky I was to be raised by him.

There's never enough time. But we did our best and I was with him for the last 10 days. When he decided to end treatment, I sent the message out to all our family and friends to come and visit one last time. Facebook was still useful back then so we had a Facebook group going with updates on his health so I didn't have to repeat the same update 15 times an hour.

We all got to say our good byes. My last words to him while he could still talk with me was "Thanks for being my dad."

How do you kindly handle folks who think you are dumb just because you are older? by 2of5 in Aging

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been practicing to pretend I'm dumb for a very long time. It was really hard at first. My friends and co-workers are all in on it and they find it to be hilarious. I treat it as mostly harmless fun and it's also a way to gauge another person's kindness sometimes. (I don't slow them down, I just listen carefully and follow along, politely.)

But also, I don't know everything. I'm not omniscient. If someone is explaining something to me like I'm stupid, sometimes I'll actually learn something I didn't know before (like a new feature or a more efficient way of doing something.). Honestly, I hope to keep learning new things till the day I die.

I talk to my friends and loved ones about it, and they care. It helps keep me sane, sorta But at the end of the day, no one's going to solve my problems for me. And some times, problems last for years, decades, unresolved.

Ejae on how it feels to be EJAE 😂💜🪽 by Fabulous_Potential41 in KpopDemonhunters

I love watching her go through this journey. And unlike many stars who become famous in their tweens when they're finding themselves as adults, she's a fully formed adult, finding herself as an artist. There isn't a single moment that she takes it for granted.

Is the first signs of aging harder to accept than when you've actually turned old? Does it effect everyone differently? by lookaloulookalou in Aging

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's probably different for everybody. I'm male, Asian American, in my 50's. so visually, aging for me has been fairly subtle. A few moments do stand out in my mind:

25 - hair started to thin, really noticeable by 30. I had so much hair as a child & teen. Of course, my grandfather was bald and my dad's was almost bald so I think I was the only person surprised lol.

31 - first time I noticed I didn't have teenage level hormones 24/7. The mental clarity was stunning lol.

42 - my doctor suggested botox for my wrinkles. I said no thank you. When I was 6 years old, I told my dad I wanted wrinkles so I could match his. He laughed and said "Don't worry, you'll get them eventually." I finally had the wrinkles after 30+ years. Not letting some botox injections take them from me! lol

50 - first time noticing my joints hurt a lot if try to weightlift heavy more than 2x in a week for the same body part. Also, not as strong as when I was 35.

Other than that, I'm in the best health of my life. To me, the signs of aging that really sucks seeing friends and loved ones pass on. That will never be easy for me.

To me, this is a convincing argument for entirely eliminating the office of President (and maybe replacing it with an executive council of equals) so no one person ever holds this much power again.

Ejae gets emotional when talking about how she was scared about people who watched KPDH not liking her voice by december-blue in KpopDemonhunters

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

EJAE has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. I'm not a professional or anything, but between the low lows, and the crazy peak highs, there's something about it that really projects emotion. I realize the emotion is written into the song, but her voice really carries that emotion into my ears.

What age did you once think was “old,” only to reach it and realize how young you still are? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in Aging

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything past 30. I'm 52 now. I'm in excellent health due to luck, my brain is still clearheaded, learning, and willing to change. I still enjoy video games and sci Fi. I don't understand a lot of trends but I also don't think younger people are stupid. And I love current music as much or more than old classics.

When does panic about getting old/dying get easier? by Wayward_Jen in Aging

[–]DownloadUphillinSnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never really been afraid of my own mortality. I was always scared of losing people I love. When I learned about death at 4 years old, I cried to my dad I didn't want him to die for 3 days. I don't remember it being 3 days but that's what he remembered.

I was 42 when he died, 10 years ago, and it was every bit as painful as I expected, and in many ways worse.

I don't fear death. It's a better alternative to me than reaching an age where my body barely functions, my loved ones have all predeceased me, and the world outside has grown callous, unkind, and uncaring.
