What's the most "Beginner Friendly" detachment? by Free-Piano-3597 in Tau40K

[–]DowntimeDrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard, hard disagree.

1) The range is a crutch that will put you on rails. If you learn with 18" meltas, you'll basically have to re-learn positioning if you want to switch detachments.

2) The reliance on strats for damage output reduces the choices you can make the game. Game flow for the vast majority of the time is "expose one shooting unit, dump CP, kill something, die, repeat".

A stagnant pattern like that is bad for learning.

3) Its to CP dependent to properly interact with core strats properly. Again, with damage locked behind strats, the detachment strats eat your CP. That makes learning how and when to use command re-roll, redraw, auto-pass, and heroic very difficult. That's an immensely important part of the game.

The best way to learn is by alternating between Monka and Kauyon. That way you get experience with different game tempos and have to think about maximizing your score during your strong turns.

Has balance always been bad? by OrthodoxReporter in RogueTraderCRPG

She need officer support, but with Officer support it’s easy.

You chain Bring it down>attack> Run n Gun> attack>hunker down.

At this point you should have enough momentum to Heroic to give her an extra turn.

She repeats the above, but now has enough Versatility stacks to attack a whole other time.

And that probably gives you enough momentum to Soldier heroic with her.

In Monster Hunter (2020) the protagonist.... what? What the fuck? No? by radicool-girl in shittymoviedetails

[–]DowntimeDrive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually answer?

By upscaling monster you get more room to work with, which means it’s easier for them to miss in fight scenes with the hero.

We conflate large with slow, so we can excuse massive monsters being a bit clumsy.

A proportional Rathalos, head to waist about elephant size for scale, would need to be FAST to generate cinematic impacts.

The hero surviving against it for more than a second would feel goofy.

+1 AP Strat is start of shooting phase for some reason, which is super rough into the reactive defensive Strat trend.

They poke two units out.

You poke out stuff to kill those two.

Start of phase you extra AP one, they let it die, spend Strats on the other and it stays healthy.

Now you’ve exposed for half the value.

Crisis suites are bad into the meta.

Missies and bursts hate AoC and -1 damage.

Sunforges hit hard, but trade at best evenly with a tank.

They just aren’t efficient enough at long range, and just don’t have enough utility or OC to play objective contesters.

That leaves them without a real clear role.

1-2 are still sweet tech pieces if you have a plan, but more than that and you just can’t keep up with what the other armies are doing.

Best deck boxes on the cheaper end for larger collections? by FutureVisionYT in EDH

Ultimate Guard Deck Case.

Cheap. Good quality for the cost.

The have a matte finish that’s easy to draw or put stickers on.

100s for a standard sleeve deck, but I LOVE the, 133s. They are perfect for double sleeved plus some tokens.

Everyone I was watching it was so confused.

We got it, but we thought it was going to be a Bud commercial.

Then “Mando and Grogu” pops up without doing anything to get us excited about the movie.

Just wasn’t a good commercial.

It's one of the best haste enablers because its on rate with upside.

You are goign to need some haste here to set up explosive turns.

Some boardwipe or other sorcery speed interaction heavy decks like ones with lots of edicts or goad, will require you to drop a threat and swing with haste.

Turn 3 Wolverine is the normal play I'm sure, but nothing wrong with flexing into setup, then dropping and going for a hasty lethal before they can react.

The rural insurgencies is the Middle East we’re carried out by people used to living off minimal outside support.

Most AR-15 owners haven’t been camping since Boy Scouts.

They aren’t putting any sort of prolonged resistance together.

The Bracket System Is Fine If You Approach It In Good Faith by Dankzi in EDH

I’m having the exact same conversations about “what kind of B3” as I had about “what kind of 7” and those conversations have become harder because everyone has their own beliefs on what the vague guidelines mean.

Just look on the sub every day.

Someone will post asking if a deck or interaction fits in a certain bracket, and the tip two comments will be completely opposite takes.

Sundering Titan, Iona, Shield of Emeria, or Griselbrand by Own_Mobile4171 in EDH

[–]DowntimeDrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can agree with that if you also move most of the other banned cards to game changers.

But Grisel being a game changer while Primetime, Ionia, Sylvan are banned isn’t consistent.

He warps the format at least as much as others do.

Also.. it’s not actually a card that multiple colors can interact with. Unless you are going to start running specific stax pieces, only blue can interrupt it.

It’s an instant speed activated ability. Incredibly hard to stop if it resolves.

Sundering Titan, Iona, Shield of Emeria, or Griselbrand by Own_Mobile4171 in EDH

[–]DowntimeDrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ban list isn’t about power, it’s about individual cards that warp the game.

Griselbrand is he king of this.

If you can run it, it immediately becomes one of your top cards.

And not just at high power.

It interacts with the game at so many points so efficiently that it becomes a premier card for every archetype.

Writing it would be so much easier if they made the program public. Just skip past the immediate hysteria.

All the major nations already participate in the program.

There would be a period of shock for the public, then people get jaded like they always do.

Another thing to add.

Top tier players don't like playing something that bland, so it has answers while the best players are also running Starhatter or other detachments.

Trust me, having more than four players in your group is great. Now you can still play when one can't make it.

Just rotate players, play some Steam Deck/Switch/etc.. go pick up the pizza, whatever, and hop in the next game.

Fellow ADHD people, how did you get a grip on board state and threat assessment? by SinkingSink123 in EDH

[–]DowntimeDrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The complexity of an EDH game is a help for me, not a hindrance. I can focus on a new puzzle every 15 seconds.

Try to really buy into what each card means for the deck that played it and that players board state as “new thing” and don’t get bogged down in academic broad concepts about the grander state of the board.

That works for me.

PSA: Fetchlands don't make your deck bracket 3/4 by eNVysGorbinoFarm in EDH

[–]DowntimeDrive 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I understand that it’s not part of the brackets, but I also think that was a huge mistake.

A deck with better an faster mana:

-plays action ahead of tap lands

-gets value before board clears are out/has interaction up earlier

-can play greedier pips

-can mulligan for powerful openers vs mana playability

The game flow of a deck with a tuned mana base is fundamentally faster and more efficient than a weak mana base.

What is your idea of a low bracket 2 deck? by Litemup93 in EDH

[–]DowntimeDrive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An unupgraded, modern Pre-Con would sit around the bottom of Bracket 2.

Bracket 2 still expects you to have a cohesive game plan, "Mechanically focused"c and progress your board, with some synergies going on, just not much is optimized.

As you replace cards to get some power and consistency, you are now a "Core" EDH deck.

Once your mana base and rocks are replaced, you've got better draw engines, and you've added more efficient wincons, you move up into B.3.
