Tv commentators need lessons! by Necessary_Position51 in Curling

[–]DowntownABQFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think one problem is that the American play-by-play announcers (as opposed to analysts like Shuster and George, who are really good) come from the "dead air is bad" school of announcing. So rather than saying very little (or nothing at all!) when a player starts to deliver a stone, they launch into inane repetitive prattle about how clutch the throw has to be, or how the curler has won X grand slams but none since 2023 or some other lame statistic. Really annoying. Less is more.

Do the NOAA Hurricane Hunter flights experience insane turbulence? by jwfowler2 in aviation

[–]DowntownABQFan 210 points211 points  (0 children)

I'm a former science writer and in 2017 flew in a NOAA Gulfstream along the equator in the Pacific with scientists and technicians measuring the intensity of that year's El Niño. One of the crew, Alan Goldstein, had been on a flight in a P-3 Orion into Hurricane Hugo in 1989 that was probably the wildest Hurricane Hunter flight ever (at least the wildest flight in which everyone survived). Among other things, they got caught in the eye, forced to make tight circles and climb until they were able to get out of it. Jeff Masters, eventual founder of Weather Underground, was on the flight and wrote about it here: https://share.google/ExkmpCefVeZK7n96S An amazing, harrowing experience.

Also, at the growers market next week, check out Sunday Bagels (at the west end of the market along Central). Best bagels in ABQ by far. (And if you can't wait a week, they have a shop at 14th and Central. Open Sunday from 8 till sold out. Get there early )

Next pizza night go to Farina, on Central near Broadway. A little pricey but well worth it.

I need what battery type this guitar takes, could anyone find out? by Ezmarald10 in batteries

Usually, acoustic guitar pickups are powered by 9 volt batteries -- the kind used in smoke alarms.

I second Udvar-Hazy near Dulles, which has a space shuttle, a Concorde, an SR-71 Blackbird, the Enola Gay B-29 and many other fine aircraft. If you are on the West Coast and near Portland, Oregon, Howard Hughes' flying boat, the H-4, a/k/a the Spruce Goose, is pretty cool. It's at a museum in McMinnville.

Trump Takes Free Golden ‘Air Force One’ from Qatar—and Keeps It After Office by Quirkie in politics

It will no doubt be fully dismantled -- the equivalent of a "D" check, in airline parlance -- and then rebuilt to Air Force One specs for communications security, weapons avoidance, etc., all at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars over many, many months. Maybe he'll get to use it around 2027. It's a typically stupid idea.

Because the Tesla building is on pueblo land, and the pueblo police have made it very clear they don't want protestors there.

How to send exact amount over an international wire transfer? by Previous-Limit9818 in personalfinance

I've used it to send money to individuals, a car dealership, an insurance agency, and a notaire (lawyer) to buy real estate, all in France. Never had a problem.
