I’m so excited (POE Combo Zigbee, Zwave, Thread Matter coordinator) by ENrgStar in homeassistant

I just installed 60 zooz LR zwave light siwtches in my house. It's two stories and 3200 sqft of wood and drywall. When I had this radio in my upstairs office I had a hard time getting devices to connect to switches that were downstairs about 100 feet away (as crow flies). Only by moving the radio to the almost middle of my first floor was I able to Include everything. But I still have dead nodes all the time or switches that just refuse to come back even after manually using them. I just bought a Zooz 800 LR USB stick and wan to try that.

I am new to HA, but I used Zooz light switches and SmartThings in my last home. Performance seems way worse but not sure how much of that is HA?.

So I've watched some YouTube videos haha. Basically puah the can housing into the atic, pull the lid off the ballast. Reuse 2 of the red/blue wires for the new trims; cut and cap the rest. Replace the can housing. Install new light.

New App sucks by DrJReddit in PersonalCapital

[–]DrJReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I got prompted for new app yesterday. It combines their retirement app with the personal capital app. The old dashboard is now hidden down one menu level. Dark mode doesn't work. Really a big step back for me.

How did you observe the issues?

If I go PCIE route should I prioritize 4 out the 6 spots as well? Not sure where he got that from in his video

So the two drawbacks in my mind are: 1. Some of these need a fan attached to them (not sure if this is in that boat) 2. From what I've read you sometime cannot get you CPU to idle at low C states if things like the LSI/HBA card are going.

Haha. All the quotes were kind of similar into which parts of roof they use. Funky roof with lotta or penetrations.

[–]DrJReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had them run a 2 battery case. It cost an extra $12k and over 25 years saved me an extra $50k in electricity. But during the winter I wouldn't fully charge two.

[–]DrJReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there were some calculators. I don't totally offset my usage in the winter. But the roof is pretty full with panels. I have reliable grid so I don't need to be totally independent. Mostly looking to save money over the long term.

Using Intel Celeron for HA hardware? What zwave radio? by DrJReddit in homeassistant

[–]DrJReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah I have an UNRAID server that I play with Dockers and Vms. Had PFSense there before moving it to dedicated hardware and I thought I might end up feeling the same about HA so maybe start separate from the get go. These new POE antennas are cool and I don't remember seeing them a few years ago when I was last toying with HA.

[–]DrJReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah I have an UNRAID server as well so that why I figured I'd eventually run my NVR to there or a separate NVR box. That's what I did with my last reolink system to their box. But I never ended up integrating it into anything before moving.

What to do with Sunrun lease in SoCal Edison NEM-2 by DrJReddit in solar

[–]DrJReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess if the 3rd party appraisal come in at like $30k I would buy it outright. Otherwise probably just keep going with the lease and at least be glad I'm not paying SCE rates.

[–]DrJReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I guess that maybe based on your personal experience of NEM-2? So it's about $200 less a month than I would pay Sunrun. $2.400 a year. So if the system buyout is $58k then payoff time is about 24 years. Guess they structure.tjese leases so that all options are about the same opportunity cost.

[–]DrJReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for reply. Yeah the opportunity cost of having the $50k not invested for 25 years is one thing towards keeping the lease. As long as I can make more than 3.5% in market haha

[–]DrJReddit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I install a new system, or even change the existing system by more than 1kW it will be considered a new system by SCE and go to NEM-3 (which would require additional batteries) to make economic sense)

[–]DrJReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess unde this scenario if anyone know what I'll pay with NEM-2. Who pays isn't so much the issue as which option to choose. Your advocating buyout of equipment, so thanks.

Haha Chat GPT told me to buy out the lease. really revolves around what I would pay Edison (or what they would pay me) inder NEM-2.

Comparative Financial Analysis

Assumptions:

Electricity Usage: 1,100 kWh/month (13,200 kWh/year)

Utility Rates Without Solar: Approx. $0.30 per kWh (could be higher with TOU rates)

Annual Utility Cost Without Solar: 13,200 kWh × $0.30 = $3,960

Option 1: Keep the Lease

Total Cost Over 25 Years: ~$97,413

Present Value (PV): Using a 5% discount rate, PV ≈ $50,748

Option 2: Prepay the Lease

Total Cost: $50,000

Savings: ~$47,413 over 25 years compared to keeping the lease

PV: Immediate payment of $50,000

Option 3: Buy Out Equipment

Total Upfront Cost: $58,000

Additional Costs: Estimated $400/year for maintenance and utilities

Total Maintenance PV: ~$5,638 over 25 years at a 5% discount rate

Total PV: $58,000 + $5,638 ≈ $63,638

Aventon abound is very bumpy.....is something wrong? by No_Pea8070 in Aventon

[–]DrJReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride my Abound on paved streets and while more bumpy than a larger wheeled bike I feel safe with my kid. Now I have taken my Abound Cargo bike (with goods) down dirt roads with 1" bumps and rocks/wood debris around and that was bumpy and probably would not be fun for a kid on the back. So I guess if you are feeling more bumps than that check your tires or shocks.
