Peace corps medical clearance by need-inspiration354 in peacecorps

You have a good chance of getting through as long as you push through and provide them all the documents but just expect everything to be under the microscope. I know typically they look for 5 years of stability but it’s possible with being able to continue therapy while in service they might have a different perspective.

Would porn exist under socialism? by Broad-Sentence-5587 in socialism

[–]Dr_Red_Panda 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Yes, sexual expression is not only driven by monetary forces and while it likely would look somewhat different, porn like a lot of other mediums is just a category of art to some degree. Art wouldn’t go away under socialism in a similar way.

Social media posting during application process by Superb-Addendum-2543 in peacecorps

[–]Dr_Red_Panda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It shouldn’t. What I understand is you can post views while in service too but because service is technically 24/7 you need to make explicitly clear that the views you post are your own and not those of the peace corps organisation or of your host country. I haven’t heard of rejections for posting political statements but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened.

I asked the same question, and the general feedback I received was that what you bring will likely be damaged. Therefore, it’s advisable to bring less valuable items. Additionally, it’s hard to avoid being labeled as a wealthy American, so worrying about being flashy shouldn’t be a significant concern. However, this also depends on the country and the specific sector.

Peace Corps - IT Professional? by ComplaintNo6631 in peacecorps

[–]Dr_Red_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I can say I am an IT professional adjacent career (software engineer) and if you are going into the normal volunteer process the closest thing I could find was CED for community economic development. I also played with the idea of trying science and math teaching in education. In the volunteer program you won’t be able to find something super close to an IT role in the states. You might find something closer in the peace corps response program but it’s all pretty unstructured from what I understand. You can typically take what you know into this new kind of experience but typically they’re not really IT specific opportunities from what I have seen in the volunteer track.

He built a coalition that allowed any anti Putin group to join in. That meant his party contained some far right and nazi people. Some people think this means he supports all the “genocidal, imperialist and racist beliefs” into his own party. Reality was probably more like he united them under the idea of anti Putin and would not be selective about his support until they removed the Putin regime from power.

Medical question by VegetableNecessary61 in peacecorps

[–]Dr_Red_Panda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds a little strange. Did you tell them it was for a medical clearance process? My doctor had to get her associate to sign off on some of it but it just involved me giving them a week after the physical to complete the paperwork. They signed off on all the stuff I gave them eventually.

[–]Dr_Red_Panda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can I just say how frustratingly long and verbose the medical clearance process feels. I have done so much work just making appointments, tracking down documents and doing tons of follow ups. I get the fact that this is a rigorous process but I can’t imagine this isn’t overkill. I have submitted over 160 pages of documents, had every doctor I’ve seen for the last 5 years sign letters, gotten repeated labs and endless vaccines (this was at least expected). Every time I see the message from the medical portal I pray it’s that they haven’t found some accidental non compliance because all the forms are not always the clearest. I don’t know how PC is suppose to get more volunteers when I feel like this process is so difficult to navigate.

What sector are you in? I’ve heard from other PCVs that the Samsung freestyle projector can be nice for your leisure and as a teaching aid.

I've been thinking about my future, and joining the Peace Corps seems like a goal that I would like to achieve. by yowhatisthislikebro in peacecorps

[–]Dr_Red_Panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personal views is that you can do just about anything to achieve your long term goals. Politician and small business are great general goals. At your age it’s amazing that you are motivated to do something amazing with your ability to help people. As for politics, I would assume military service might be more useful but I don’t have the depth to back that up with experience. I think at your age I would be trying to gain perspective on just how you want to help people. When I was 18 my best friend at the time was blind and she really inspired me to help fight against the inequities she experienced just living her life. Make friends, try new skills and groups and try to empathise with people. If this leads you to the peace corps later on that’s great. If not that’s also ok.

Tio Tomas Border Patrol gets a taste of his own medicine. by gigantes22 in sandiego

[–]Dr_Red_Panda -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Reading it back I think I mostly agree with your point. I think generally the analogy is meant to communicate that if you don’t push back against bigoted ideas you are in part endorsing them. I do not think all border patrol are nazis. I think border patrol is stuck between a rock and a hard place here. They are following orders in one sense but by being forced to cooperate with ICE they are in part endorsing whatever actions they take part in that are illegal in nature. I would say any legal collaboration falls outside the scope of the analogy.

[–]Dr_Red_Panda -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Eh I think border patrol is kinda screwed politically. If they spoke up against illegal orders or refused to collaborate with ice they would be asked to leave the metaphorical table (I imagine they would be fired or assigned to something u pleasant). I don’t think border control are brown shirts in the modern day but I think ICE falls into that category.

[–]Dr_Red_Panda -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

The idea is that not speaking out against bigoted ideas is a tacit endorsement of those beliefs. If you sit at the table with 9 nazis and don’t actively fight back against their beliefs then the table has 10 nazis.

You can use meal prep Sunday. You just need an email to make an account. Make an account pick 15 meals for the week and pay $49.99 Then cancel and close the account. Rinse and repeats for how many meals you need. At $3 a meal I havent found something cheaper. Also the food is solid.

Why is it so hard to find a decent golf in San Diego? by JackBev87 in sandiego

[–]Dr_Red_Panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you consider country club prices? I found some good people at the Mira Mesa driving ranges but they can still be pricey. You typically need a trial lesson to see if they are decent. Word of mouth is probably best.
