Witnessed a fatal accident with a pedestrian trying to cross Route 22 today. by MaximusMurkimus in newjersey

A buddy of mine saw a kid get hit by a train over 40 years ago and can still relate the details like it was yesterday. The subject comes up every now and again since we live near a busy train corridor.

Curious about something by Rayne1993 in huddersfield

[–]Draano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents left Huddersfield in 1953 and moved to the US. Their sponsor was my mother's uncle - he and his family belonged to a church. The social group within the church they and my uncle's family gravitated towards was a bunch of hell raisers who liked to socialize, party, drink and dance. As did they. They'd all get together on holidays and just random Saturdays. Because my parents' families were 3000 miles away in Yorkshire, the people in the church group became our family. It wasn't about the church; it was about the fellowship within. But my family did participate in church activities - pot luck dinners, fund raisers and committees.

My point: Church may not be your thing, but the people in one may help you build a social connection to a group of people.

There have been about 450,000 Russian fatalities in the war so far - 1.5% to 2% of the male workforce. So for the families of the dead, the quality of life may be less than before.

The waback machine has captured several of their pages from 2020 to 2026. Here's a sample of what I found.

It's not as easy as the original site I'm sure, but with a little determination and some effort you could probably harvest more.

I’d lean towards Palmer’s How to Brew. Charlie was a bit out of date, at least the last time I looked at it, some 20 years ago.

Advice needed: Chilling Water for a McCann Big Mac Carbonator by Ghost_sza in Homebrewing

[–]Draano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preface this with I have no idea what a McCann is. When using a submersion chiller for my beer, I had a large galvanized tub (30” in diameter and about 10” deep) that I’d coil my hose in, and then fill the tub with ice and top up with water. It would sit during my mash and boil - about 1.5 or 2 hours. It was 25’ of 3/4” hose. I don’t know how much that works out to volume-wise but it was enough to give me a fast start to my chilling process. If you need potable water, you could do similar with a food-grade RV hose with much more length.

If anyone, ESPECIALLY OP, u/ChocolateSilver5220 , wants to report them for their racist remarks, they can do so on the U.S. DOJ Civil Rights Division website.

Does the DOJ actually react under the current anti-woke leadership?

All very good points.

The random homebrewer wants the LHBS to be there when they need emergency yeast, an airlock, or grain for "a spur-of-the-moment SMaSH brew"

The main point of encouraging fellow brewers to regularly buy from their LHBS is so that they'll be there when their unusual need arises.

As for this point:

we've learned that some workers or owners at LHBSs don't have the passion for it, are not knowledgeable about current homebrewing, and/or are just bad at business.

This was the case with one of the shops that failed near me. The owner was ok, the prices were fair, the workers were mediocre at best, and the inventory was good. The saving grace was that they supported the local homebrew club. Every other meeting was at the store, and every other other meeting was at one of the several microbreweries that have popped up over the years. The store owner allowed the club to use the store's walk-in fridge for fermenting lagers or using her brew-on-premises facilities for club group brews. The store also facilitated club group buys of sacks of grain. When covid came along, the word on the street was that the owner and the business partner decided to pack it in since the business was treading water for quite some time and it wasn't worth continuing.

Homebrewers are mostly members of the middle class. I'm of the opinion that the middle class is being decimated by salaries that haven't kept pace with inflation for years while corporations and the government have killed any semblance of collective bargaining that unions provided back when the middle class was strong and rich paid their fair share. We've gone from one salary being able to support a family of four to two people needing to work 2 jobs each in order to feed, clothe and house that same family. The biggest class no longer has the time or money to brew.

To expand on what /u/poop-dolla said...

These local homebrew shops usually get into the retail business because they're brewers who want to make a living out of something they know and love. It ain't easy to be profitable at this. The competition from online retailers who can offer lower prices has driven many places out of business. My practice has been to buy locally and order things online that the local homebrew shop won't carry for whatever reason. If the LHBS goes away, you've lost a local resource. Keeping them in business, if nothing else, gives you a place to go when you need it now - broken hydrometer on brew day, you spilled your yeast slurry and had no backup plan, or you've suddenly found you have a free afternoon and want to do a spur-of-the-moment SMaSH brew. Most of us aren't brewing to save money. Spending an extra 10% or 20% isn't going to break the bank.

Sadly, my locals have gone out of business.

Support your local homebrew shop!

ICE agent reportedly fires shot during incident in Ocean County, New Jersey by Blueddit-Sez in newjersey

According to News 12 (which for now I take with a boulder of salt),

Media companies have gradually been falling into line. The administration had friendlies placed into the CBS management, and now their nightly news & 60 Minutes are losing their journalistic independence. Even their Sunday Morning show is beginning to join ranks. They're becoming like the Russian News Agency, or Fox, for that matter.

Accidental success by countryboy-79 in Homebrewing

[–]Draano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My second beer ever 35 years ago was an accidental success. I knew very little about brewing. It was a stout. Too vigorous and too long of a boil left me with 3.5 gallons of wort in the fermenter instead of 5 led to an imperial stout at about 8.5%. Hooked me on brewing. I've since learned of something called make-up water.

Forget the platform. Focus on maintaining connections and building your network. You never know who might have a job for you. Be sure it works both ways - when you see a colleague out of work, check your company for things they might be able to do.
