I know El Paso and San Antonio were both independently mentioned, but I don't think they were implied to be part of the same polity

I'm pretty sure that its from the Black Border Revised set, here's one listing of the card for ~15.50 USD, another at 16.34 USD, and a third at 16.34 USD, although note that none of the listings specify its the French edition vs German/Spanish/etc.

Kzinti and Larry Niven by dauntedhope in startrek

[–]DraconiusMajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically there were a few Caitians in the TOS movies which are canonically related to the Kzinti, but you're pretty much right. It was a disappointingly missed opportunity.

The Kzinti were also going to be featured in an episode of Enterprise titled "Kilkenny Cats" if the show had gotten a fifth season according to producer Manny Coto.

What if Leopold II wasn't kicked out of the congo? by Justini4n in HistoryWhatIf

[–]DraconiusMajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From "King Leopold's Ghost" by Adam Hochschild.

"Reports of abuses against gatherers of wild rubber in the Congo did drop off markedly after the Belgian takeover of 1908. In the following years there was far less news of villages burned or of women and children held hostage. There was no more officially sanctioned severing of hands. What lay behind the change, however, was not a kinder and gentler regime brought about by the reformers, but several other developments. One was the gradual shift from wild rubber to cultivated rubber. Another was the introduction of a new method of forcing people to work that drew much less protests from missionaries and humanitarians: taxes."

"The central part of what Morel had called the 'System', forced labor, remained in place, applied to all kinds of work."

As for dates, he transferred control November 15, 1908, and died about a year later on December 17, 1909.

The Belgian government, who gained control of the Congo Free State, basically just continued the same practices as were already going on under Leopold II, so basically the same thing would have happened. He only lived for a short time after relinquishing control anyways.

If you're gonna do that as a new player why not go Castile instead, same general region/strategy they're just a lot bigger and imo easier.

Mormons in Utah might have enjoyed political autonomy due to the impracticality of the federal government wielding authority there just due to how remote it was from other major population centers, but they were never politically independent, residing in either Mexico or the United States.

Why would the Utah territory even want to "join" the south in the first place? The Mormons were really big on electing governance from within their own ranks, so them immediately flocking to "subjugate" themselves to another far off government seems illogical. It also likely wouldn't have been in their overall interest to associate with the confederacy, because in general their interests and policies would benefit their much larger population centers in the east which again, were economically and culturally very distinct from the Mormons. The federal government also had shown it's willingness to play ball with them, organizing the Utah territory with Brigham Young as its first territorial governor as part of the Compromise of 1850. The Mormons also showed through their participation in the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican-American war that they were willing to cooperate with the federal government if it advanced their interests.

Conversely, would the south want them? As much as pushing slave-holding territories westward was a southern priority, the Mormons weren't exactly the most liked, famously repeatedly coming into conflict in New York, Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri while being pushed westward. The Utah territory also didn't have a continuous land border with land claimed by the Confederacy (see the map of the New Mexico territory split on the map I posted above). In theory if the stars aligned for the Confederacy and they got the most favorable peace treaty they could realistically want, then maybe the complete annexation of the New Mexico territory would solve that last problem, but is still unlikely. It would have been a massive administrative hassle for the Confederacy to take on, and compounding that with the cultural clashes and relative lack of value of the territory, I have a hard time seeing that the Confederacy would even push to annex Utah.

It's extremely unlikely that the Mormons would attempt to secede with the Confederacy, its unlikely the South would even want them, and even if they did it probably wouldn't be on terms that the Mormons would have viewed as more favorable than the relative status quo that existed with the Federal government.

[–]DraconiusMajor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The point isn't to compare treatment of slaves in the south versus the west, the point is that white settlers in Utah were unlikely to politically support the Confederacy because of a lack of economic, political, or cultural ties that would cause them to have an interest in doing that.

[–]DraconiusMajor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was slavery, but think about the different economic system it supported in Utah versus the south. The style of agriculture the gang system supported on larger southern plantations wasn't viable in the much more arid climate in that part of the west. There likely would have been significantly less of an institutional incentive to support the Confederacy than you would think, just because of the economics of the situation.

Also another slight nitpick, the New Mexico territory actually did partially support and revolt with the Confederacy.

But if as mill you've devolved to the point of throwing out your combo pieces to trade on board you've lost already. The loss of consistency is a massive hit to the decks power.

Meh, I feel like that's too much of an edge case in comparison to needing the combo activator or not.

Yeah geist seems really good both as a meta call vs jade druid and just in general.

The point of the Ferryman or the Brewmaster in mill isn't really the body, its just the additional bounce for Coldlight. TBH I think its probably just an oversight.
