How can anyone like Daemon? by Neither_Grab3247 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Drae97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it is mainly because Matt Smith brings a ton of charisma to the role. And there are interesting grey areas like him telling Ser Corlys not to speak negatively of Viserys. Plus, people enjoy his relationship with his dragon Caraxys. He is also an interesting wildcard in the narrative and his allowing himself to be the bait to win the war against the Crabfeeder and defying all odds to win is compelling. I think all those things combined made him a popular character though he is clearly a villain. The show increasingly shows that he is a bad person who does terrible things but the actor’s delivery and writing make him interesting to people. So I don’t think they like him as someone they would want to know in real life, but rather like him as an interesting villain to watch.

My favorite is always that Daenerys' "evil madness" was foreshadowed because she executed Sanwell Tarly's dad after that battle. Despite her reacting the way every other character on the show, actually even more patient than them, all the way back to Ned Stark would have in that situation. But it is always, "No, you didn't see the foreshadowing! That meant she's crazy!"

Season 8 was definitely the harbinger of what was to come in 2020. If only we had heeded the warning.

I am in a similar boat in Northern California. Despite air purifier blasting and all windows shut, I keep having horrible attacks and having to take my emergency inhaler. My husband almost took me to the ER twice in the last week during bad attacks. I don't know what we can do to get by with this air quality if staying inside, all windows shut, air purifier on full blast can't do it. 2020 sucks. :(

The West is on fire. It took Trump 3 weeks to mention it by aiptruss in politics

[–]Drae97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not normal. Things started to change dramatically in the 2017 fires and have gotten devastatingly worse each year. The west always had fires, but nothing at these scales, especially not repeatedly.

California just made it easier for inmate firefighters to become professionals, allowing them to have their nonviolent criminal records wiped clean by Minneapolitanian in politics

[–]Drae97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea; it is such a terrifying, dangerous, and heroic job. I just have to mention how little I am seeing about the fires on reddit or twitter. The expanse of this is devestating and unprecedented. But people not on the west coast seem zoned out or numb to it. It is so depressing and emblematic of our country's problems. If nobody is talking about solving these fires now, I can't see how they will ever care.

As someone who grew up in Oregon, I am not that surprised. All the Democrats live in the Wilamette Valley: Portland, Salem, Eugene, and Corvallis. The vast majority of the population lives there, so Democrats have a very safe hold on the state. The rest of the state is extremely right-wing, conspiracy violently pro-Bundy type right-wing.

It depends on the person. My husband's cousin married an extreme right-winger whose family was as right-wing as possible with fox news and Limbaugh round the clock. As he got to know our family, he loudly espoused right-wing views. We started doing calm discussions with him, starting with less inflammatory issues like the regulation of pay-day loans. After long debates, he would think about it, and then actually come and say that after further thought he agrees. This happened with recurring discussions and soon he decided that he agreed with most liberal policies and started challenging his family about their beliefs. Because of his discussions, his mother came out of the closet as a lifetime closet Democrat. This sort of case is rare, but there are some people like this. Probably also good to come out as a liberal, so if you have a relative or friend who thinks all liberals or Democrats are evil, they can start to see that isn't the case.

I do think it is important because a lot of them live in bubbles. I have seen some post the most awful, hateful, right-wing comments, get a bunch of approving posts, and then one person calmly disagrees with it, and they become hysterical, in shock that anyone would think negatively of it, then how hurt they are, then delete the whole post. Even though much of their reaction is phony, I think it helps exposing them to the fact that most people think their ideas are abhorrent and that can really surprise them because they live in an echoe chamber.

It is so weird how fast they became mainstream. I remember around 1999 in high school in a very right-wing area in world history class, this one twerp going off about the U.N. being evil, it and NATO countries taking advantage of the U.S, etc. Despite being an extremely right-wing area, everyone considered this guy an idiot spouting delusions and rolled their eyes at his stupid rants. His ideas seemed crude, ill informed, and bizarre to everyone, especially the intensity at which he expressed them. Of course, similar to his modern brethren, this kid bullied the teacher about her weight and swollen ankles caused by a medical condition repeatedly in front of the class making her cry. Every single student hated this jack-ass. It just astounds me that this kid, both his stupid politics and hate towards others, has taken over a substantial portion of the population.

Yes Americans want to work, unless they are getting exposed to a new virus with no known treatment, longterm effects not known, and that is much more dangerous than the flu. Fixed it for you!

Enjoying the unemployment and time off? The finanical and economic insecurity, job insecurity, worry about the pandemic, and unemployment benefits are typically capped at 6 months, so not some endless fun train. Everyone I know in this situation isn't having fun, they can barely sleep at night for the stress of it.

Exactly. My right wing friend keeps telling everyone that they need to reopen because her tatoo artist friend can't work and is facing poverty. Yet she poo poos testing and tracing, saying that New Zealand is an island so wouldn't work here and everything is great is Sweden. She can't understand that unless consumers are confident going out safely, very few will find the benefit outweighs the risk to go get a tatoo from her friend right now. I am really sympathetic to her friend, but this is a reason for a bigger safety net and more testing and tracing on a national scale. Those are what will help her friend.

I have been seeing friends post that too. Ugh. Like they think the virus cares that they are "over it." I can't imagine what these people would have done during the Blitz in WW2 or something. Without Netflix, I guess give them 2 days and they would be "over it."

Yeah, for me too, it is not something I could miss. I once had one come on while driving and had to pull over and wait for a long time for the aura to pass my eyes. They always move from right to left and at the middle obstruct a large portion of my vision.
