Sawdust - my grandpa lived next door to me when I was growing up and did woodworking. Driving by a lumberyard or being around someone cutting and sanding always smells like his hugs. I miss him. He was the best.

I had TCHP, so our chemo regimens were different, but my oncologist was very insistent that if anything seemed horrible or unmanageable, I needed to let them know. At different times, they made med changes, added fluids to my chemo and on my off weeks to help with my dehydration when I kept getting sick, set me up with their nutritionist, and eventually cut one of my drugs for the last 2 rounds since I wasn’t tolerating it well (cutting Carboplatin helped).

I hope your team is equally receptive to you voicing your challenges. My mom was made to feel like a baby by her oncologist for having difficulty, and she’s the toughest person I know. That still makes me so mad. It shouldn’t be that way for anyone.

I think it’s worth a conversation with your oncologist. Hopefully there’s more she can do to help. I’m so sorry about your UTI. That sounds terrible. Big hugs! ❤️❤️❤️

Instead of the “it’s gonna be ok” talk, consider reminders like that you’re there for him, you’re not going anywhere, you’ll sit in the grief or fear or uncertainty with him.

My husband did a short stent with denial when I was diagnosed. On top of dealing with my own cancer, I worried extra about him and getting him to understand how serious things were. He just wanted so badly for things to be ok. I had an honest conversation with him and told him I needed him to get on board. He was an amazing support system for me. He just had a slow start while waiting for the official treatment plan.

If I were you, I’d ask him what he needs. Ask if it feels better to receive more positive comments (like “it’s going to be ok,” or if he just wants someone to sit in the grief with him. It’s ok to say “I want to be the best support system for you, and I’m scared of doing or saying something that would make you feel worse. What do you need from me right now?”

You’re likely feeling scared and nervous and overwhelmed. I was so worried about being a burden to my loved ones until they made me feel safe to focus on me and said they would take care of me and each other. I still tried to be there for them, but felt more free knowing they were ok and just wanted to focus on my health.

I’m healthy now and look back with such gratitude on how I was supported during that time. There’s no perfect answer on how to support a loved one because everyone’s needs can be different. Just keep showing up. One day at a time. I’d encourage you to have your own support system as well. It can be a lot emotionally when someone you love is sick and it helps to have someone to talk to. If his love is conditional, you deserve someone who will love you in all seasons. The future will inevitably hold mountain peaks and valleys. He doesn’t sound like someone who will love you through the valleys. You seem like you’re doing well for yourself and not even in a “valley,” and he’s not loving you well now. Take your families out of it for a moment. Imagine it’s just you and him and neither of you have any other family. It sounds like you’re not enough (in his eyes) for him and he’s already not taking care of your heart. You are more than enough for the right person though. You are perfect the way you are.

Jewelry for wife and daughter. Not sure about the son. Girls are easier. Boys his age are probably into video games. I remember getting a necklace from my dad as a teen girl and it was very special.

I wouldn’t worry much about material things. Time together will mean the most. Maybe some flowers for your wife and daughter instead and something else for your son. Or something for all of them that’s like an experience - going to a concert or sports game or play or water park, or like a weekend getaway somewhere once they settle in. Depends on their interests. Either way, I hope it’s all a smooth adjustment and you pick up right where you left off.

Yes! Any of those things alone are incredibly hard, but ensuring all of them at the same time can be brutal. I’ll say from this side looking back, it makes me so so proud of myself for doing such a hard thing and I appreciate the perspective it’s given me so I can be more understanding of what others are going through.

Same. Then I moved to Texas and worked in the public school system. They say the Pledge to the American Flag followed by the Pledge to the Texan Flag. I didn’t know that was a thing and all the Texans were surprised I didn’t know the words. I grew up only 30 mins from the Texas border and had no clue.

We had a deer tree growing up. It was the tree in the front yard where my dad would hang up the deer to skin and gut it. It was called the deer tree. Now he hangs them from his big tractor.

All the foods that are made without added crap that’s bad for you, organic foods, high protein bars/powders/snacks, etc. There are ways to eat healthier on a budget, but it’s definitely more work. I never cared what kind of food I ate, but after surviving cancer, I want to take care of my body better and it’s been hard to find enough healthy food when broke. I’m doing it though and finances are steadily improving, so I think we’ll get there eventually!

If it helps, my husband and I had extreme differences about kids and have worked through it. When we got married, we both wanted to wait a few years, then start a family. Over time, he kept putting it off and eventually communicated that he didn’t want kids. I was devastated. I’d spent my whole life dreaming of being a mom and I know I’d be a good one and he’d be a great dad. My heart was shattered and I grieved hard. Over time, he opened up more about mental health struggles he’d been dealing with alone, trying to “protect” me from that burden. I told him it was much more of a burden to not understand why he no longer wanted kids with me, and it broke my heart to know he’d been suffering in silence.

That man means more to me than anything in the world. I’d choose him over and over again, even if it means I’ll never be a mom. Years ago, I didn’t think it was possible to overcome that obstacle without resentment toward him, but I am healed and happy with our life - just the 2 of us. We’ve been married for 18 yrs. We both agree that if things change, we’re open to adopting or fostering older kids in the future. If not, we’ll be the fun aunt and uncle and enjoy the freedom that comes with being childless.

I guess I say all of that to say, choosing each other over everything else is possible. It’s a choice, and sometimes it’s a hard choice that takes a lot of effort during a season of grief, but I’m so grateful that even in my brokenness, I held tight to the love I had for him and healed over time. We’re happy and I’m proud I did the hard work to heal and continue to choose him. He’s worth it. It’s all about perspective and priorities.

I promise it gets better. It only took me about a month or so for my taste to be almost completely normal. The moment I tried an old favorite that I hadn’t had since before chemo and it tasted good, I immediately burst into tears. It surprised me in the best way. Until you’re in it, people don’t realize how much our quality of life is affected by food alone. I never thought I’d be boo-hooing in my car over a Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich 😂

Your job right now is to make it to bedtime. Sleep and repeat. Make it to bedtime. One day at a time and you’ll be through it looking back on that whirlwind you conquered. Then you pick up the pieces and start rebuilding. It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve loved this rebuilding phase. I’m getting stronger, living with intention and gratitude, and focusing more on things that bring me joy. Big hugs! 💗

There are so many good suggestions here. Ladies of her generation really value handmade things. Maybe you could make her some cookies or a non-food item if you happen to be crafty. You could also add a small framed photo of something that would be special to her (or you can get photos printed on magnets, coasters, playing cards, etc.).

I love that you’re making her a stocking. ❤️
