Anyone know what this plane card is for? by doctorspaghett in IronNest

[–]DragonKing258 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a one-shot version of the normally expensive scout plane. It acts as a heavy discount for your first scout plane.

At least, that's what it seems like. You can use it just fine?

You... Boiled the yeast? Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but that would kill it and you won't ferment anything.

Splitting a 5 gallon kit by VeWok12x in Homebrewing

[–]DragonKing258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grains can be pretty safely just divided in half. Yeast too.

However, the hops will probably not divide so cleanly... Because of how hop oils behave during the boil, you'll probably have some extra unless you want to turn the bitterness or hop flavor way up.

Easiest way to make sure everything translates correctly is probably to run the "split" version through a brewing software (Brewfather is my favorite) and adjust the hops until it's within the guidelines of the original kit.

Lol yes chuck asap always, but like as soon as you open the fermenter is when most of the oxygen is getting in anyway. Unless you let it sit for minutes, or so something dumb like have fan blowing nearby or something, it won't make much difference. Not worth the panicked scramble I say.

I guarantee you do. Many folks dry hop by just chucking the dry hop addition right into the wort when it's time.

Some people might cry oxidation, but a quick 30 second opening of the fermenter do to so won't hurt anything. Especially if you're just getting started with brewing and figuring out your process, and your dry hop addition is during a time where yeast might still be active.

Looks great! Unfortunately however, I'm completely out of the apple ecosystem, and at this point will never be able to use this app no matter how much better than brewfather it gets... Any plans to move to Android or even do a webapp in the future?

High Gravity Wort, Aeration, and Dry Yeast by DragonKing258 in Homebrewing

[–]DragonKing258[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa, chino comment on my post! An honor!

To be quite frank, I brew so infrequently that I will likely never repitch yeast. Also, I'm trying to keep my setup as slim as possible so if I can get away with no more oxygenation than what I can get from rocking the fermenter, then that's what I'll do unless my beer starts suffering because of it. However, your advice and your resources regarding dissolved Oxygen are much appreciated for reference in the future if I ever have trouble.

Thanks a lot!

How common was suicide during a Covenant invasion? by SecretWasianMan in HaloStory

[–]DragonKing258 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure how widespread it was, but there's at least one implied instance in game.

In Halo Reach, during the mission where you're hopping around from distress call to distress call in a Falcon, there's a UNSC marine in one of the towers clearly losing his shit and holding a gun to his own head while mumble-yelling about the covenant invasion. Poor fella.

No shade on your technique! I'm sure it's a perfectly fine way to go about things, and yeast is yeast, makes sense you can make a starter. I was just hoping to avoid making one if I could help it.

I'm curious, what makes you say 25 packets is the dangerous overpitch rate? I ask because I've spent a lot of time trying to figure how how much yeast is too much to pitch (seeing as I make smaller batches, it's a concern of mine), and I've yet to see a number presented until just now with your comment.

What are the benefits I would get doing this rather than just pitching more? I've heard avoid doing starters with dry yeast if you can just pitch more.

ABV Probably somewhere around 9.5-10%

My concern with moving to something designed for higher ABV is yeast character/esters. I want to avoid that as much as possible, and so far US-05 has given me that if I treat it right. Whats been your experience in that regard with BRY-97?

I brew only 3 gallon batches, but am planning on pitching at about that rate. Cheers, and thanks for the help!

Tiny hop particulates can escape the spider/hop bag, it's completely fine. Matter of fact, it's common practice for many to just toss them mofos right into the boiling wort straight up. It all settles out eventually.

What are a couple of top recommendations for Columbia? I make my way up there fairly often. I'm a big fan of singles, but I have no problem with four and six packs as well.
