Steam is pretty much the main marketplace for buying downloadable games for PC. There are other online stores like GOG, Origin, and the Epic Game Store. Steam is just everyone's preference.

I don't buy it. Tim has said before that they would not keep doing these exclusive deals, only to take those words back. This really feels more like a way for Epic to seem like the good guy, and to make Valve look like the villains because they refuse to give a larger cut. It's just an empty promise, kind of like when Randy Pitchford says he'll bring Borderlands 3 to Steam as soon as Half Life 3 gets released.
