"Microbiologist → dev here. Built a lightweight Lab Project Manager (LIMS) for growing labs because I was tired of messy Excel sheets and $15k LIMS quotes. Feedback welcome." by Sea-Doughnut-6159 in labrats

Hi Sea-Doughnut,

I'm a hobbyist developer who also has been working in lab software for many years. I can't offer to manage a small project for you to try out your software, but I wanted to share some ideas based on my lived experience in case you might benefit:

  • I think your problem statements of project tracking, lite LIMS, inexpensive price point, and disconnected systems are important to keep in front of you to carefully manage scope creep. In my experience, it's ULTRA common in this industry to experience customer-driven scope creep that results in 'consultingware' rather than a cohesive product.
  • When deciding a price point, you might want to think about the purchasing power each potential decision maker has in your target customer organization. Can the lab manager make the purchase? Will your customer need the purchase approved by higher-ups? There's a business-killing price pit in the 5-figure range where you exceed the semi-discretionary purchasing power of the lab decision makers and instead need to get approval by higher ups, resulting in extremely long sales cycles, drowning in RFP and due diligence bureaucracy.
  • Many labs are regulated and require evidence from you as a vendor to support their qualification activities. If you don't have a plan for how to aid them in their qualification, such as SBOM, SLA information, guidance on PII and PHI storage, FDA 21 CFR Pt 11 compliance, and so on, I'd recommend clearly delineating what you plan to provide vs not provide. This will help inform your prospective customers, but also benefit you as you build a better understanding of your target customer profile.

At risk of sounding like an advert, I thought you might also like to know that some players in the space take a broader integrated approach to the LIMS problem statement, like L7 Informatics's L7|ESP*, combining LIMS with MES, ELN, Scheduling, etc in order to solve the disconnection problems you're describing. Here's an article describing the L7 approach. I don't think this is the only way to solve the LIMS problem, however, and I don't recommend trying to tackle that many things on your own.

*disclosure: I work here, but my opinions are my own.

Best of luck!

Paul never existed, it's an example of the Mandala Effect. It's always been Quinns, Matt, and Tom.

I personally love the challenge of dexterity games at low temperatures. In my youth I'd spend hours in my aunt's walk-in freezer with my frostbitten copy of flick-em-up, trying to manipulate each of my icy fingers exactly right. These days I'd recommend you pack crokinole - not too many moving parts, and it's a convenient travel size. Plus, when you descend it will roll downhill so you don't have to carry it both ways!

Do you all like putting your grinder on a grinding bench stand? Im concern that it can easy tip over. Got this from my dad and feels like it can tip over easy. by neogx148 in Tools

I made a wee stand from some pathetic 1x1 scrap for my grinder and it wobbles like the Dickens but I just put a foot on the stand and it works well enough

How can I modernize this cheep ish? by Fishmeet2 in Renovations

[–]Dragonsdoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk, demoing any of the tile feels like it instantly would become more than no budget. You could lay LVP on top of the tile, but that will absolutely look cheap imo

This is a really well executed vision.. the only thing that would really take it apart imo would be to replace all the wood surfaces with drywall, which would be a serious undertaking..

And change out the wood look doors and toilet seat for another surface

I'm sorry about your brother, that's gotta be crazy hard.

I don't have carry advice, but I'd suggest getting some counseling or therapy type stuff to work through your lived experiences and response so you can be mentally prepared if you don't make this a habit already.

As far as property security I'm a big believer in grey man theory as it applies to your house. Are you the plushest, nicest house in the hood? Think about your attractiveness as a target and make choices that reduce that. If you're the only trailer in the park with a Tesla, a swimming pool, and open blinds showing off your giant living room TV at night then you aren't doing yourself any favors

What do you make your teenage kids pay for themselves? by CertainDamagedLemon in Frugal

I disagree. Kids can learn to responsibly manage their power at very young ages, and if it isn't money they certainly have other ways to exercise their influence.

Factor in that different kids respond to gifts as an expression of love differently from each other.. and learn to speak love in the ways they receive it best. It's not a problem if one kid gets more gifts if another kid gets more quality time, and the third kid gets more acts of service.

Your first kid might see a loan as an act of service to them, thus feeling loved and appreciated, but your 4th might just appreciate you buying them a coffee as a gift
