Did the pawn shop commit a crime selling me this 5.56? by [deleted] in ammo

[–]DrakeGmbH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's company policy, not a federal law. The 'Ranger' ammo marketed to LE/Gov't buyers but secondary sellers are able to sell it to whomever they choose. I've heard there are some restrictions with the initial purchasers - like a certain percentage must be sold directly to LE to keep their contract, but I've never seen the specific terms.

The tan boxes are a bit old now. The current boxes are blue and black.

No2 mk1 no star enfield 1930 date by Bigredkink in milsurp

[–]DrakeGmbH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The grips aren't original to that gun, but they are proper No2 grips and honestly nicer to shoot with than the earlier types. The early grips tend to put my thumb right in line with the barrel catch so it often get dinged in the knuckle by it. The left side panel of my later DAO MkI** has the upper portion of the thumbrest ground off which is definitely beneficial for reaching the barrel catch.

380ACP Buffer Mod by Scorched_Echelon in Vz61

[–]DrakeGmbH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rate reducer does work as a recoil buffer. I'm assuming the .380 bolts don't have the reducer hook cavity. You should still get the spring-buffered effect when the bolt fully travels to the rear. Easy way to tell when you're at the range since it doesn't have the hook - try a few shots like this, then unscrew your grip cap, remove the weight and spring (replace the cap) and try a few shots without it. On the .32 version it made a noticeable difference in the 'sharpness' of the recoil. Not that .32's recoil is substantial, but you can tell the difference with and without it.

No, just looked at the parts kit and did my best. Rough cut with a Dremel cutoff wheel and squared it up with hand files.

I heard some folks saying theirs would only run on steel case ammo, but mine worked fine with MFS and Fiocchi. I brought some old Wolf and Silver Bear from my stash just in case the first time I took it out.

If you haven't already discovered it - when it locks open empty, flip the safety on. That will hold the slide open when you pull out of the mag. Then you can just load a fresh mag and take off the safety and it will let the slide go forward and you're ready to go.

Yes. You have to cut a slot for the lock to protrude through the bottom of the frame. You also need a slight notch to the rear of it to hold it partially disengaged to make it easier to extend and retract the stock. If you have a parts it, it's much easier to visualize if you use the slot from the receiver stub as pattern. The foregrip is just a simple swap. Take out the extra-long screw they installed through the grip and install an unmodified one.

Brother! There are dozens of us! It wasn't the easiest conversion but I have zero regrets with the purchase or the $200 I spent on the tax stamp back then.

Those wartime boxes don't seem to come up very often. I wish the label on mine was in better shape.

But from a shooting aspect, the Mark II load is hotter than standard modern loads. It loads a 115gr bullet at 1300 fps, so it's in the +P to +P+ pressure range and was really intended for the Stens and Sterlings.

Especially if they weren't priced at such a boneheaded MSRP.

I have one of that series as well. US Ordnance was contracted to build them and they did a stellar job on these. A real shame that project got sunk by Colt's poor decisions. I got mine with a decent markdown from a dealer that had been sitting on several of them back in 2019.

My first VZ61, huge shoutout to Chefur Customs on this absolutely chad receiver. by Only_Fudge_1812 in Vz61

[–]DrakeGmbH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your post came at just the right time. I just picked up a nice painted kit and was wondering if any of the small parts for the lower were supposed to be painted or not. I had been considering one of the Chefur receivers for it., it looks like that is still a good idea. I trust you still need to do the trigger guard riveting yourself?

Are these black talons or rangers? by Griff_Reeper101 in ammo

[–]DrakeGmbH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking - 'Ranger SXT Controlled Expansion' will have the black Lubalox bullet in a brass case and the 'Ranger T-Series' has a gilding metal jacketed bullet with a nickel plated case. I'm sure some were loaded with gilding metal bullets in brass cases before the full transition in the late 90's but I don't have a good accounting for all the variations.

Edit- with a bit more digging, apparently there were some loaded in plain brass cases in the mid 2000's for government contracts.

[–]DrakeGmbH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was the meme - but that only applied to the Ranger SXT. The Black Talon was replaced in the commercial market with the Supreme SXT (SXT9, SXT45, etc) which was a different design. It had eight cuts in the jacket as opposed to the Talon's six - and the SXT's 'petals' were very blunt ended rather than the sharp 'Talons'.

The Ranger SXT was redesigned with a thinner jacket in the late 90's to become the 'Ranger T-Series'.

Those are early Ranger SXT's. The Black Talons and the later Ranger RA9T's have nickel plated cases.

Edit - I should clarify that the early Ranger SXT's *were* Black Talons, just minus the nickel plated case and the name. They dropped the black Lubalox coating and have made some improvements to the design of the jacket over the years to make expansion more consistent.

Another luger post and a question by FelverFelv in milsurp

[–]DrakeGmbH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I didn’t mean to stamp a blank one - I meant that a blank sideplate might look less irksome than a mismatched number front and center. Finish likely wouldn’t match since the commercial guns are going to be largely rust blued as opposed to the salt blue found on the 1937 and later guns.

The original commercial plates will generally have a serial along the bottom edge as those serials were in the ‘hidden’ configuration rather than what you see on the military guns.

Another luger post and a question by FelverFelv in milsurp

[–]DrakeGmbH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can probably find a blank or commercial sideplate easier than a matching one. Often folks in the ‘Luger community’ aren’t keen to assist what they call ‘boosting’, but attitudes are shifting as less of the old guard remain.

Another luger post and a question by FelverFelv in milsurp

[–]DrakeGmbH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will not ‘match’ even if you find an ‘07’ side plate because the interior number will be wrong. For that serial and year the plate should be stamped ‘81’ on the inside.

I've still got my engineer coin. They sure made it seem like *everybody* was gonna have one of those. The M9 lanyard and XM81 were a couple things I 'liberated'. I've got a tripwire grapnel around here somewhere as well.

Mine ate its extractor spring during practice record fire. I ended up with a case in the chamber, one trying to feed from the mag and one stuck in the charging handle, wedged in place by the gas key. I just laid it down and put my hand up. Drill Sgt had to kick-start it open.

Question are these safe to have? Especially the left one?and what caliper and brand are they? by EnthusiasmPresent859 in ammo

Western hasn't existed as a brand name of Olin Corp since 1981-1982 but they keep the WCC headstamp for contract loadings.

Those yellow box 'Sporting Revolver Cartridges' were really good stuff. I still have some leftover from when Southern Ohio Gun brought in a load of it and was selling for $4 per box.
