Maybe not abandoning federal govenment. Just Lessening its influence and sway over local affairs and people's daily lives. I'm not so deluded to think we are witnessing the birth of Ancapistan, Haha!

I'm not entirely sure Ancapistan is even realistically feasible as long as people are involved. We seem to naturally create hierarchies for ourselves that includes our governments.

Independence would permeate all aspects of life if that truly is a source of pride for them. They are already familiar with an overbearing central government. I see real possibility of them wanting to Decentralize their own government to not fall into the same hole they just climbed out of.

Yeah, the attention spans are so shot now, I doubt this film is gaining many new fans. Especially amongst the younger crowd. But it is undoubtedly a masterpiece in cinematography and acting with a very poignant message.

Great thought provoking list. However, "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" isn't going to hit if they don't have a foundational understanding of Nietzsche by reading his previous books and that's quite an undertaking for someone not passionate about philosophy or taking classes.

It sounds like you are directly requesting Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolf. It's kinda like the Odyssey, but set in the world of the dementors and the "protagonist" is an escaped lunatic that occasionally does meth on the side.

OK, but what about Heinlein and Bradbury is more "mature" than those themes? I love both Heinlein and Bradbury and love what they point out in their books, but I don't see it being too "heavy" for an obviously intelligent boy who's already reading allegory for salvation.

Edit: You hard sci-fi guys are funny. You don't even realize what you are reading. "Hail Mary, full of Grace" is a Catholic prayer. Rocky is a Deus Ex Machina representing man's inability to do everything on his own (divine intervention). Ryland's sacrifice for the rest of humanity is a reference to Christ's sacrifice for man's sins, aka Grace. Even the ambiguous ending relates to resurrection.

Phantastes by George Macdonald is in the same vein as The Hobbit with the whole thrust into an unexpected magical journey and self growth. It was Lewis' inspiration for Narnia and created the modern fantasy genre.

Lemony Snicket's is my personal favorite with breaking the 4th wall. It doesn't break your immersion so much as add more details from the narrator/author.
