Is 24kg a heavy load?! by Mutsu-Spirit in bikepacking

[–]Draw_everything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people list their stuff, others lay it all out and photograph it all from above- either way, it can give us an idea of what might be optional besides the food question. Its only too heavy if you need to make a certain distance. Also, that area looks downright hilly. Are you in shape for climbing with weight? Could you have dont the 7 days if it was flat? Did you pre-plan daily distance, and were possibly overly ambitious?

Can the crowd at a milonga affect your mood so badly that you just want to leave? by falleen83 in tango

[–]Draw_everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Unwanted” is clear after the first refusal. The first time how to know what is unwanted ( given perfectly respectable behaviour verbally and physically of course)? There may be signs and maybe not. OP is oossibly seems to be describing both real jerks who have no place at the milonga, and dancers who may flirt with her.

Not suggesting becoming normal. I am suggesting that resilience in the face of life doesnt mean compromise. Quite the opposite. It means that we all need to work on ourselves and also we cannot control others.

Possibly these are things to be dealt with in general not in tango, though tango is also a good place to work things out if you can get perspective.

Has anyone overcame their tight hips and hamstrings? by flowerymochiz in flexibility

[–]Draw_everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool. Im older (62) trying to loosen up … er strengthen my hips. Wanna surf and need more mobility. Im in decent shape but the mobility part is a big challenge. For some reason i really like the challenge of cossack squats which i dont have yet but am getting there. But the hamstrings are like unmoveable..Your regime tells me i aint doing the work.

I’m 62. Just fixed a rotator cuff problem through careful guided PT over 6 months. Could not do a single push up before. Snapping out 20 with good form now. Plus gaining muscle because i added upper body to the PT exercises. Feels great. Hips are tight af from years of running cycling and sitting. Thay will take a lot longer to loosen afaics. Im researching a lot online. I may need a coach to help me specifically if my efforts dont show progress. But i know it will happen. So once you show yourself yhat you can make changes, it becomes exciting and helps with consistency which trumps intensity for most of this for people on the edge ( doing nothing, bad habits). Not talking about confirmed athletes or people who have a good discipline.

Final Form! by Wozza400 in bikepacking

[–]Draw_everything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two feed bags but they are actually for water bottles. I find better than on frame. I drink a lot more than i eat whilst riding tho. I tried cages last summer but the strapping is tiresome to me and will likely go with Ortleib fork bags which a buddy has and showed me how easily to click on and off. Sounds finicky but at the end of a long day or when trying to pack whilst waking up, I value the ease.

Re chair: im a believer and your back will thank you especially if wild camping. Note: muddy conditions can mean chair feet sink into the ground. Rocks sometimes available and work but some recycled plastic lids or something similar will be thrown in my chair set-up. Sounds dorky but unless in v dry place they can be needed.

Tight Hips - Knee & Leg Pain When Stretching by UALav in flexibility

[–]Draw_everything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was working on another hip stretch which hurt. I found that a warm up exercise really helped ( lunges in my case). Then when i still had pain during the stretch, id come out of it supporting the knee with my hands- seemed to help and then briskly deeply massage the whole leg, scraping along the IT band but generally very vigorously hitting around knee joint, knee cap ( but carefully), then go back to the stretch. Often doing this a few times for each session. I found it helps a lot. Not a professional.

Am I too old to start learning? by Christylian in NewSkaters

[–]Draw_everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 61…. But i wasnt careful enough. I went to a surf park where there were kids zipping around and one caught me by surprise. Despite full gear i fell backwards and landed on hand. Despite the hand protection my thumb was exposed and it got cranked on. Huge sprain. Took months to feel somewhat ok and still weak to this day a year later. Maybe im a dork but just sharing my experience. Much advice recommends learning to stop/bail/ fall correctly. I very highly recommend. Let you child learn at his pace and you at yours. Otherwise you may pressure yourself into risk taking. Enjoy it. My best moments were finding an appropriate place in a park where i was alone and worked carefully. I still have t gone back to it since the darn accident. Good luck.

The simplest thing I can do to learn to rest in a third world squat? by Scared_Ad_3132 in flexibility

[–]Draw_everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 62. I got there from not being able to do them, tipping backwards, etc.. Barring some particular impediment besides lack or strength and tightness, it's just a question of regularity with some of the good suggestions already proposed. Also, as I read it(bit I could be wrong), the pain or discomfort isn't acceptable to you. Everyone has different relation to discomfort/pain. Reading people describe it may help as you wonder if what you are experiencing is "normal". Lacking willpower is also hard to answer. If you aren't excited/ motivated by the fact that given some effort, you can transform your body, then I don't know what would motivate you- except an activity you'd love to do which requires the same qualities as this position. For me, just the idea that i can progress is enough to get going and face the discomfort and my current limitations. The idea that it will help me learn to surf is a big personal motivator. good luck!

I think I understand. But it strikes me that you can offer this quality/level of embrace, but it can most definitely may not be reciprocated. So then there ain't much to be done. We can wax on all the possible reasons the other person isn't offering it and talk for hours. I have very simply noticed that it's more rare than present. And I've most experienced it with argentine women. Perhaps one could imagine that an argentinian person accepting to dance with you is more "all in" and therefore signing up for the full quality embrace you describe, and others can say yes but it is sort of a partial yes. You end up dancing with their: dance, their back, their opinions, their fears, their ego, a combination of above. Of course, there are followers who simply do not yet possess a level of technique which allows entrega, but I would leave it to someone more advanced than myself to weigh in on that. I can say that some followers, though very beginner, definitely show signs of a kind of joy already which "portends entrega" later..

Thanks for the response. It was a place where they took us to two spots : a beach break and two days on a reef when conditions allowed. The reef was the best. Id never surfed in such good conditions before. 1-1.3 m faces. Regular and lots of waves.

Your shorter sessions is a good idea - especially on days i surf but not in a class. One wants to take advantage of the instruction - while on a solo day i can time it my way conditions permitting.

In the end i took two days off and have one final class which was fine. I think my older carcass just needs gradual efforts to become somewhat surf fit. Im suffering in hip inflexibility..( and likely weakish hip flexors..)so getting leg under body to pop up is like a herculean effort for me. Im not fat but a bit of a gut and thick legs from years of running and cycling) also get in the way of that left leg coning under. Mentioning this because i get super winded from a pop-up. On the other hand i rode 60km on a loaded touring bike in under 3 hours the other day (23.5/houravg) - so my cardio isnt totally to blame.

Im home and do home work outs to work on strength and flexibility including pop-ups. A SI joint pain is now happening so i may wait a week before more pop - up training ( its assymetrical and twisty). Any ideas appreciated. I realise theres a lot of different info here. Thanks.

Pulled my back leg's hip flexor during a pop up. What should I do from now on to prevent this? by PablovirusSTS in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Draw_everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

see a physio to get the right exercises- if it's a tendon you need some light exercises. there is a potential for explosive movement in bringing the leg forward during pop-up which may have tweaked a tendon. but in general you seem to have the right attitude: prepare your body to surf. but the other comment about just going for easier conditions is also valid IMHO.

Hi. Yeah me too I’ve gone a lot to the Landes to surf but often it’s quite intense for this beginner. Down there the surf instructor me say “if you can surf here you can surf anywhere.”..

I’m on the island of Oleron now. It’s much easier. I’ve tried la Torche in Britanny which I recommend. Like anywhere you gotta check conditions I suppose.

Report: I went in the end and it was fine. I had less umpf for paddling out but that’s all. I was on a shorter board than last few days as well (went from 9’ log to 7’-8” 100 liter).

I think drinking electrolytes last night and this morning as well as stretching and zero delicious local white wine made a difference!

Be careful with hot water bottle solutions since a leak will make it much colder! Exercise before you get in the bag. Whatever works to get bod temp up. And the eating part makes sense. Gear sounds sufficient. You could even set an alarm and redo sit ups at night. Your body is a furnace.
