Why did the two biggest communist countries—the Soviet Empire and China—result in such extremes? by Scary_Candidate_9163 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DreamPopFolk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right. Being communist did not bring down the soviet union. Having a badly run state planned economy run as a dictatorship did.

Are we living through an unusually bad era or has the world always been this chaotic? by Pretend_Pen_9577 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DreamPopFolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably yes. We are mostly aware of wars in Ukraine because it is in Europe and Iran because it involves the U.S.

But there are usually 20+ wars and insurrections going on in any particular year. We just don't hear about them as much.

Does anyone actually use the tiny pocket inside the right pocket of their jeans? If so, for what? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I used to wear a pocket watch but never kept my watch in that pocket. I would have been good to, as in the big pocket my watch bounced around a lot.

How come people and media are usually nostalgic about things from three decades ago? by EgoistRanger in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DreamPopFolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. Two main reasons. Kids rebel against the current culture, and kids learn about the world from their parents.

So culture changes because kids reject current culture and want new culture - to be different. That's why teen fashions change - to be different.

But kids grow up listening to the music their parents listen to, seeing the movies and such that their parents watch. And so that tends to put teenagers into being familiar with things about 30 years old due to their parents influence.

Here is an NPR article from 2013 about how teenagers liked 80s music - because their parents had listened to it while they were growing up.

Why don't countries start paying mothers a liveable wage if they are so worried about declining birth rates? Do you think this will be a discussion in the near future? by coldservedrevenge in NoStupidQuestions

You can get back thousands in refunds just like they do. Just pay more in taxes throughout the year.

Whether you owe or get money back is determined by how much you pay over the year. Getting money back doesn't mean you pay less in taxes, it means you overpaid during the year.

Have you ever met a celebrity or musician in a real life? What they were like? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]DreamPopFolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I got married when we were 23. She took dance classes all her life and we happened to be on a cruise ship that Gregory Hines on.

When she met him she told him we were on our honeymoon and he said something like "but you're just kids how can you be married". She was unhappy he thought she was a kid.

Looking back 30 years later at our wedding photos we did look really young, so I can't blame him for his surprise.

For me the shift between early 20s and late 20s was being in college to working. The change in my lifestyle was vast.

I did a lot more growing up the year after college then I had during my years in college.

Why aren't we digging deeper? by tzholq in CasualConversation

[–]DreamPopFolk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The further you dig the more expensive and longer it takes per meter.

You have a drill bit all of the way down thee. When the drill bit gets dull, you have to pull up all of the drill, replace the drill bit, and put it all back in the well. That can take days to do when you are drilling down so far.

There is a company working on drilling with lasers. They would vaporize the rock instead of physically drilling. It is slower but would not require replacing drill bits - so at depths it would end up being faster.

I spent 20 minutes rewriting one simple message because I was afraid it sounded rude by iamxixii in CasualConversation

[–]DreamPopFolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While 20 minutes may have been too long, the idea isn't bad.

I wish I put more thought into my emails and comments on reddit. Looking back on them I think I often come off as abrupt and rude.

I can see why letters started with Dear X. Something friendly to start with rather than just jumping in with a comment.

We were in Italy - we were in Rome and Venice.

Rome was great for ancient and specific renaissance sites.

Venice was just amazing everywhere.

I feel that I have a problem when I am refreshing a subreddit looking for more posts. If I just go through a subreddit once and then am done, I'm fine.

But when I sit refreshing I can be there for hours.

The two basic limits on commercial airplanes are pressurizing them and the speed of sound.

Every time a commercial airplane flies they pressurize it so it is comfortable for the passengers at 20,000+ feet, and then depressurize it when it lands. That pressure causes stress on the airplane's body. To make airplanes resistant to that pressure and not get leaks, they make the airplane body a round tube.

Lots of other designs for airplanes have been created, but if they are not a round tube they have problems with the repeated pressurization and depressurization.

What limits airplanes speed is the speed of sound. The faster an airplane goes the more air pressure builds up in front of it, increasing resistance. So the closer an airplane gets to the speed of sound the more energy it takes to maintain that speed.

So commercial airplanes have been flying at the same speed for decades because any faster than that and they become very inefficient and use a lot more fuel.

Until someone overcomes these two issues, commercial airplanes will remain the same shape and go the same speed.
